Ayrshire author shortlisted for Indie Book Awards
Kilwinning author Andrew O'Hagan has been shortlisted at the Indie Book Awards for his novel Caledonian Road.
An Ayrshire author have been shortlisted for an award at the prestigious Indie Book Awards.
Award-winning Kilwinning author Andrew O'Hagan has been nominated in the fiction category for his novel Caledonian Road.
Organised by the Booksellers Association, the Indie Book Awards are the only awards for authors and illustrators judged by - and given on behalf of - independent bookshops.
Caledonian Road is a Sunday Times best-seller which follows Campbell Flynn over the course of an "incendiary" year where his world begins to fall apart in a tale of power, privilege and the hypocrisy of the liberal elite.
He faces tough competition for the award as fellow nominees include James by Percival Everett, There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak, The Heart in Winter by Kevin Barry, The Glassmaker by Tracy Chevalier and Think Again by Jacqueline Wilson.
The Indie Book Awards are the culmination of the year-round campaign activity of Books Are My Bag which aims to showcase and promote to consumers the vital and unique economic, cultural and community value that bookshops bring on a local and national level.
Andrew is a keen supporter of independent bookshops and was "proud" to be shortlisted for the award.
He said: 'This shortlisting for Caledonian Road means the world to me, because my enthusiasm for independent bookselling is pretty boundless.
'I love the fact that the expertise and the human touch you find in independent booksellers is celebrated by the Booksellers Association and I feel proud to be one of the authors included.
'My relationship with independent shops is crucial to me; it describes a great deal of the fun and camaraderie to be enjoyed in this business.
'In my opinion, the inhabitants of British high streets with indie bookshops should celebrate their good luck on a daily basis.
'For a lot of us, it's where culture and entertainment and great conversations about books really begin and I couldn't live without those beautiful emporiums staffed by people who really care about what we write and what they sell.
'Hats off and respect due.'
Emma Bradshaw, head of campaigns at the Booksellers Association, said: 'At the Booksellers Association, we are privileged to regularly witness the alchemy of authors and independent booksellers working in tandem to place the perfect books into the hands of exactly the right reader; it is a magical pairing of brilliant writers and expert curators.
'Therefore, it is always a privilege to announce the shortlist for the Indie Book Awards, where we can bring the results of this partnership to as wide an audience as possible alongside spotlighting some of the best and brightest summer reads for 2025.'
Two Ayrshire bookshops are among the judges as the awards are decided by independent bookshops.
Neither will be judging Caledonian Road though as Molly Murray from Seahorse Bookstore in Ardrossan and Sarah Skelton from The Book Nook in Stewarton are both judges in the children's categories.

Engaging in banter about holiday plans with the crew, it was revealed one member would be jetting off to Portugal whilst James plans a jaunt to Yorkshire, reports the Mirror. He assured fans that they can expect more gastronomic treats when the show resumes: "Yorkshire for me. But we will be back here with more top chefs, other brilliant guests, and more delicious recipes later on in the year." James signed off by wishing the audience a fabulous summer break. "Until then, thanks for watching," he said. "Have a wonderful, fantastic summer. I'll see you out there wherever you are." He ended the episode with a courteous goodbye: "Thanks for watching, see you again soon, goodbye for now." Earlier on, James had let viewers know that there would be a briefer show due to another event. "Because of the Derby on ITV1 this afternoon, it is a shorter episode than usual today," he noted, before assuring: "But we still have time for one more dish." Whilst enjoying a cooking segment in Italy, James playfully considered settling there after savouring a traditional fish dish prepared by a local chef, much to the entertainment of those watching. "Can I just say if your two sons don't want to do this, you call me," he suggested. Chuckling, James contemplated a tempting thought: "I might retire here. I could be over there, I could be doing this, it is fantastic." It comes after the 52-year-old revealed he's parting with some of his race cars because they're getting harder to get out of the older he gets. "The car collection sort of changes as you get older," he shared with Samuel Goldsmith on the Good Food podcast. "You can't get in the cars that I bought 20 years ago and I can't get out of them. So I've sold quite a few of the race cars and I've gone into sort of old school cars. So stuff that I can get into and get out of." James noted that motor racing is better suited for the svelte: "It comes down to the fact that I race cars, or I still try and race a few cars and I actually struggle to get out of them now. "Getting in them, you kind of fall in them, but then you've got to get out of them and it just doesn't look very good." On Saturday, the host explained that his show is being put on ice for the summer. He did not give an explicit time or date that the long-running series would return - but did shed light on what he would be doing in the interim. After thanking his guests and co-stars, he engaged in some banter with his crew. When the episode came to an end, James announced: "That is also for the series. ITV has been making headlines in recent weeks over the brutal changes they have been making behind-the-scenes, reportedly leading to staff redundancies and even reports Lorraine Kelly is considering quitting the network after her number of shows per year was cut in half and her time slot hugely reduced. ITV revealed last month: "From January 2026, Good Morning Britain will be extended by 30 minutes to run from 6am to 9.30am daily, and will transfer to be produced by ITV News at ITN at their base at Gray's Inn Road in London. GMB will be made by a dedicated team within ITV News at ITN. "This change will see ITV bring all its national news gathering into one hub, with Good Morning Britain benefitting from the journalistic and production resources already in place for national news bulletins, for the website and for digital platforms including ITVX." It was added: "Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women will continue to be produced by ITV Studios and will be broadcast from a new location in central London." Drastic changes have not yet been made for weekend scheduling.

The TalkTV presenter was taking part in one of his last ever shows following his revelation he has stage four kidney cancer and has been dealing with it for five years. Now, in a heartbreaking moment alongside co-host Ash Gould, 53, the 74-year-old TV star confessed things are getting "very very difficult". Speaking on James Whale Unleashed on Friday, the presetner opened up about his cancer journey while talking to a guest who had been through cancer with her late husband. He said: "Until very recently, everything was quite normal for me, everything was fine, and then you do get to a stage like I am now, with things get to be very very difficult." James added: "To anybody else who is in the final stages of cancer, you have my sympathy. I know exactly what you're going through, I do know, I look basically okay, I get told you look alright and I look okay, it's all make-up." With his comments shared to social media, fans were quick to offer messages of support. One user wrote on the Twitter /X upload: "I'm also stage 4 kidney cancer but you are a real inspiration. I seriously can't believe how much better you look compared to 2 weeks ago!" James first revealed in May that his condition had worsened. He told viewers that treatment was no longer an option and candidly said he will be "lucky to make it to Christmas". He sadly told viewers at the time: "I'm at the end of my cancer journey. There is no treatment I can have anymore." He added: "I can't tell you how grateful I am to Talk to actually let me on the air and sit next to Ash, which is a real pain in the butt, but I've been doing it for 25 years!" He said at the time that his recent ill health had taken its toll on him. He also revealed he had a severe bout of flu which led to an intensive care stay. Despite his health, the present was able to joke, saying: "It might actually be helping me, you never know, so I don't let that cloud my judgment – but on the medication I am on, I'm all over the place. "I'm hoping to go on for another few weeks, few months but as soon as I can't do the show anymore, I won't."
