Takeover can 'extinguish the rot' at Rangers
The takeover of Rangers by an American consortium can "extinguish the rot" that has persisted since Craig Whyte's ill-fated reign, says departing director Alastair Johnston. Whyte bought Rangers from Sir David Murray in 2011, ousting Johnston as chairman, and the club lurched to financial collapse the following year before re-emerging in the bottom tier of Scottish football. Celtic have dominated the domestic game since, but Johnston is hopeful of brigther times ahead after a consortium led by healthcare tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises last week acquired a 51% controlling stake in the club. Johnston, who returned to the board as a non-executive director in 2017 when Dave King was chairman, is standing down with a new-look board taking shape but the United States-based Glaswegian and lifelong Rangers fan is optimistic about developments. The 76-year-old told the PA news agency: "I was asked to respond to a question at the Rangers AGM last December as to the options available to the club in order for it to return to its glory days. "My comments were reported at the time as being somewhat bemusing. I responded by describing the current circumstances in English football about so many of the leading clubs being taken over by American investors and, in several cases, their approach included an ownership model that involved multiple teams. "I was careful to insinuate that this was a hypothetical possibility. In truth, I was already aware of the interest that a group involving the 49ers had shown in Rangers and that we had already engaged in early-stage discussions with its representatives. "Understandably, the possible investors wanted to maintain the utmost secrecy as to the direction of their mission. "It took about six months for the Rangers board to reach a mutually acceptable arrangement that would be in the best interests of our club. "Intense negotiations were conducted covering all facets of such an acquisition, and I am delighted we were able to capitalise on a collaboration that we believe will provide us with a platform to extinguish the rot that had befallen the club for a decade since the Craig Whyte fiasco."

Fresh injury concerns set to sideline Bayern Munich's Kim Min-Jae through Club World Cup
Sport Bild reports that fresh injury concerns will cause Bayern Munich central defender Kim Min-Jae to miss the coming club World Cup. According to the tabloid, the Bundesliga professional is struggling with both inflammation in his left Achilles tendon and a fluid filled cyst in his foot. The report claims that a return for the South Korean centre-back is not planned until mid-to-late July. Bayern are known to be considering selling Kim this summer, meaning that it could be the case that the 28-year-old has indeed played his last game for the German record champions. A separate Sport Bild report provides an update on Kim's Bayern central defensive colleague. Dayot Upemecano is back on the training pitch following his knee surgery, yet still taking it slowly. Advertisement Upamecano completed dribbling exercises through small cones, long passes, runs on the running ladder, and even longer sprints. However, during training, he signaled slight discomfort in his right groin. The problems were not serious enough to force Upamecano to stop training. On this day: Al Horford, Ramon Rivas born On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Boston big man Al Horford was born in 1986 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. A product of the University of Florida, he helped lead that school to back-to-back NCAA championships (one of the only schools in history to do so) with center Joakim Noah before being drafted third overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. After nine seasons with that franchise, he would sign with the Celtics in free agency in the summer of 2016, making the All-Star team twice with the team (in 2016 and 2018) before leaving in free agency in 2019, only to return to the team via trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2021. He of course won a title with Boston in 2024. Happy birthday, Al! It is also the birthday of former Celtic big man Ramon Rivas, born in Carolina, Puerto Rico in 1966. He would play his NCAA ball at Temple University before being signed by Boston as an undrafted player in 1988 for the following season, his sole in the NBA. He would average 1.4 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.1 assist per game while with the team. Today is also the anniversary of guard Cecil Hankins leaving us in 2002. A product of Oklahoma State, Hankins joined the (now defunct) St. Louis Bombers in the debut season of the Basketball Association of America (BAA - a predecessor league of the NBA) in 1947. At the end of that season, the Alabama native was dealt to Boston for Wyndol Gray, appearing in 25 contests for the Celtics over which he logged 2.8 points per game. Rest in peace.
