KUALA LUMPUR: The Changing of the Guard ceremony at Istana Negara here was carried out in full military tradition.
The ceremony was conducted by four officers and 79 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (1RAMD).
The series 1/25 ceremony, which began at 9am yesterday, also included two officers and 22 horsemen from the 21st Ceremonial Mounted Squadron (SIB) under the command of the 12th Brigade Headquarters.
The event began with the outgoing guards marching from the palace compound and taking their positions at the main gate, followed by the incoming guards taking their place opposite them.
This was followed by the handover of the regimental colours, symbolising the formal changeover between the outgoing and incoming palace guards.
The ceremony was witnessed by 1 RAMD commanding officer, Kol Mohd Fuad Md Ghazali, and commanding officer of the SIB, Lt-Kol Shahrul Azudin Maulod.
Speaking to reporters, Kol Mohd Fuad said the ceremony not only involved a physical change of guards but also carried significant symbolic value in continuing Malaysia's military heritage, Bernama reported.
He said it reflected the identity of the Malaysian Armed Forces as a force prepared for the battlefield while also upholding national honour and tradition.
'Apart from being a symbol of respect for the Royal Institution, the Changing of the Guard ceremony also attracts tourists from within and outside the country,' Kol Mohd Fuad said.
'The uniqueness of the ceremony, which combines military elements, culture and Malay heritage, makes it one of the nation's proud traditions.
'It also provides the public with a rare opportunity to witness the beauty of military customs not often seen by the general public,' he said.
Kol Mohd Fuad added that the Malaysian Armed Forces is committed to preserving and honouring the ceremony as part of the national heritage.

United Nations and Asean urge global community to protect oceans under threat

PHNOM PENH / ASEAN (Bernama): The United Nations and Asean has warned on Sunday that oceans which provide an abundance of food and jobs for millions around the world are facing numerous threats and are in dire need of attention. The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in his message on World Oceans Day 2025, urged global governments and partners to collectively protect the vast oceans from growing pollution and prevent exploitation of marine resources. "Our ocean has not only shaped cultures, stirred imaginations, and inspired wonder across the ages; it also supplies the air we breathe, the food we eat, the jobs we need and the climate we count on. "But today, the ocean needs our help. The distress signals are clear - from plastic-choked waters to collapsing fish populations and loss of marine ecosystems, from rising temperatures to rising seas,' said Guterres. World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8, with this year's theme "Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us'. According to the UN, the ocean produces at least 50 per cent of the planet's oxygen, is home to most of Earth's biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people. It will also be a lifeline to about 40 million people who are being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030, said the UN website. But over the years, 90 per cent of big fish populations have depleted and 50 per cent of coral reefs have been destroyed, as people continue to exploit marine resources on a large scale without replenishing them. In the region, Asean echoed a similar message, warning of multiple threats to the seas - from pollution to climate change. "Across Asean our seas support livelihoods, feed millions and hold vast natural and cultural heritage. "However, our oceans are under threat from pollution, overexploitation and climate change. Asean joins the global call to protect and sustainably manage our marine ecosystems for generations to come,' the regional grouping said in a Facebook posting today. Global leaders are gathering to attend the third UN Ocean Conference co-hosted by France and Costa Rica and held in Nice, France from June 9 to 13, 2025. -- Bernama

Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Malaysia to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said while Aidiladha signified the values of sacrifice, devotion, and unity among Muslims worldwide, it also solemnly reflected to the duty and dedication carried out by the mission, in upholding Malaysia's interests overseas. The embassy also welcomed a visiting delegation from the Royal Military College (RMC), comprising 32 Putera cadets and five officers at the celebration. The delegation, led by its Commandant, Brig Gen Shaiful Azuar Ariffin, is currently in Bangkok for a one-week student exchange programme with Thailand's Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School (AFAPS). Bong noted that the visit offered RMC students a unique opportunity to experience Hari Raya celebration away from their families and friends.
