US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would double steel import tariffs to 50 percent, speaking in Pennsylvania at a US Steel plant, where he also touted a partnership between the American steelmaker and Japan's Nippon Steel.
"We're going to bring it from 25 percent to 50 percent, the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry," he said.
"Nobody's going to get around that," he added, in the speech before blue-collar workers in the battleground state that helped deliver his election victory last year.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs on allies and adversaries alike.
He has also targeted sector-specific goods including steel, aluminium and automobiles with 25 percent tariffs.
On Friday, Trump said that tariffs helped protect the US company, adding that the plant would not exist if he did not also impose tariffs on metals imports during his first administration.
In his speech, Trump also stressed that "US Steel will continue to be controlled by the USA."
He added that there would be no layoffs or outsourcing of jobs due to the deal. (AFP)

US reveals pick for Nato's next supreme allied commander

President Donald Trump 's administration announced on Thursday its nomination for the next top US general in Europe and said the US military officer would also assume the traditional role of Supreme Allied Commander Europe (Saceur). Trump's decision to nominate US Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich to both roles, which was first reported by Reuters, will relieve European Nato allies and even some of Trump's fellow Republicans amid concerns about a retrenchment in American military leadership of Nato Grynkewich must be confirmed by the US Senate. The position of Saceur, which oversees all Nato operations in Europe, has been filled by a US general since its creation after World War II. US Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower became the alliance's first Saceur in 1951. Still, since taking office in January, Trump's administration has pressured Nato allies to ramp up their defence spending, saying Europe should be primarily responsible for defence on the European continent. Speaking at Nato headquarters earlier on Thursday, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said he was confident that members of the Nato alliance would agree to a major boost in defence spending. Xi, Trump talk on the phone amid row over tariffs

Xi, Trump talk on the phone amid row over tariffs Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump meet on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Osaka in 2019. File photo: Reuters President Xi Jinping on Thursday held phone talks with US President Donald Trump at the latter's request, according to Xinhua News Agency. The conversation came as stalled tariff negotiations between the two countries roiled global trade. Trump had declared one day earlier that it was difficult to reach a deal with Xi. Trade negotiations between the world's two largest economies stalled shortly after a May 12 agreement to reduce their tariff rates while talks played out. Behind the gridlock has been the continued competition for an economic edge. The US accuses China of not exporting critical minerals, and the Chinese government objects to America restricting its sale of advanced chips and its access to student visas for college and graduate students. Trump has lowered his 145 percent tariffs on Chinese goods to 30 percent for 90 days to allow for talks. China also reduced its taxes on US goods from 125 percent to 10 percent. (Agencies)
