GOF foils attempt to smuggle 19,000 kg of white rice from Thailand
GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure was made after a GOF's 9th Battalion team spotted several men loading white sacks into the back of a trailer.
'However, all the suspects fled into nearby bushes upon realising the presence of the police,' he said in a statement today.
He said an inspection of the trailer found 19,000 kilogrammes of white rice, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand and intended for sale on the local market.
'The seized rice, along with the trailer, is estimated to be worth RM426,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority for further action,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Paddy and Rice Act 1994.
Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said in a separate operation, his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 11 cows after intercepting a lorry that was being driven suspiciously in Kampung Telaga Bata, Tumpat, last Thursday.
'An inspection found 11 cows in the back of the lorry, and the driver failed to produce any valid documentation for the livestock. The driver, a 28-year-old local man, was arrested,' he said.
He added that the total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM151,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Department of Veterinary Services for further action and is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953.

Graphic designer pleads not guilty to insulting Islam on Twitter
KUALA LUMPUR: A graphic designer has denied charges of insulting Islam through offensive remarks posted on Twitter. Yeo Li Yin, 47, pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Building manager pleads not guilty to abduction and assault charges
SEREMBAN: A 34-year-old building manager, A. Ramrash, has pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court to charges of abducting an 11-year-old boy and causing hurt to his mother. Ramrash faces an abduction charge for allegedly taking the boy from his 43-year-old father, the boy's legal guardian, along a monsoon drain in Taman Seremban Jaya at around 5.30pm on July 13. He was charged under Section 363 of the Penal Code, which carries a potential jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Fidha Misjedi informed the court that her team was not offering bail for the abduction charge. However, Ramrash's lawyer, Chrysandy Lai from the Legal Aid Department, requested a low bail, citing that the accused was inebriated at the time of the incident. Magistrate Saiful Sayothi set bail at RM6,500 with one surety and scheduled the case for remention on Aug 21. In a separate case, Ramrash also pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his mother at a house in Taman Seremban Jaya on May 13, around 6.30pm. He allegedly injured his mother by twisting her left leg, causing it to swell. This charge falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which can lead to a jail term twice as long as the maximum under Section 323. Lai informed the court that the victim had agreed to withdraw her police report against Ramrash. For this charge, Saiful set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and also fixed Aug 21 for remention.
