Egypt links Ukraine peace efforts to Gaza crisis, urges Israel to accept Hamas-approved deal
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it values the efforts being made by US President Donald Trump to end the Ukrainian crisis and put a stop to the military operations and the negative repercussions they have caused.
Egypt welcomed the US-Russian summit held in Alaska on August 15, as well as the meeting that brought the US President together with his Ukrainian counterpart and a number of European leaders in Washington on August 18.
Egypt reaffirms that these efforts are in complete alignment with the Egyptian state's position, which calls for pushing for political and diplomatic solutions to international crises, as there is no military solution to this protracted crisis.
The only way forward is through continued serious negotiation, a show of the necessary political will and flexibility, and adherence to the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Egypt also expresses its hope that these efforts will lead to an end to the war as soon as possible, given the severe political, security, humanitarian, and economic repercussions that have acutely impacted developing nations, which now face increasing pressure as a result of the war, especially concerning food security.
While valuing the diplomatic efforts being made to reach a settlement to the Ukrainian crisis, Egypt also expresses its hope that the international community will continue to exert its efforts in the Middle East as well, aiming to achieve a decisive and final settlement of the Palestinian issue.
It stresses the necessity for the Israeli side to accept the deal that the Hamas movement agreed to, based on the proposal of US Envoy Steve Whitkoff, in effort to swiftly reach a ceasefire in Gaza, allow access for humanitarian aid, and secure the release of hostages and a number of Palestinian prisoners.
This would contribute to establishing security and stability and reviving the comprehensive settlement path on the basis of the two-state solution and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
Egypt renews its readiness to continue its constructive contribution, in cooperation with regional and international parties – particularly the US – to support the paths aimed at achieving international peace and security, out of a keenness to enhance regional and international security and stability.

Microsoft employee protests over Israel military ties lead to 18 arrests
AP — Police officers arrested 18 people at worker-led protests at Microsoft headquarters Wednesday as the tech company promises an 'urgent' review of the Israeli military's use of its technology during the ongoing war in Gaza. Two consecutive days of protest at the Microsoft (MSFT) campus in Redmond, Washington called for the tech giant to immediately cut its business ties with Israel. But unlike Tuesday, when about 35 protesters occupying a plaza between office buildings left after Microsoft asked them to leave, the protesters Wednesday 'resisted and became aggressive' after the company told police they were trespassing, according to the Redmond Police Department. The protesters also splattered red paint resembling the color of blood over a landmark sign that bears the company logo and spells Microsoft in big gray letters. 'We said, 'Please leave or you will be arrested,' and they chose not to leave so they were detained,' said police spokesperson Jill Green. Microsoft late last week said it was tapping a law firm to investigate allegations reported by British newspaper The Guardian that the Israeli Defense Forces used Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform to store phone call data obtained through the mass surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. 'Microsoft's standard terms of service prohibit this type of usage,' the company said in a statement posted Friday, adding that the report raises 'precise allegations that merit a full and urgent review.' In February, The Associated Press revealed previously unreported details about the tech giant's close partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, with military use of commercial artificial intelligence products skyrocketing by nearly 200 times after the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The AP reported that the Israeli military uses Azure to transcribe, translate and process intelligence gathered through mass surveillance, which can then be cross-checked with Israel's in-house AI-enabled targeting systems. Following The AP's report, Microsoft acknowledged the military applications but said a review it commissioned found no evidence that its Azure platform and AI technologies were used to target or harm people in Gaza. Microsoft did not share a copy of that review or say who conducted it. Microsoft said it will share the latest review's findings after it's completed by law firm Covington & Burling. The promise of a second review was insufficient for the employee-led No Azure for Apartheid group, which for months has protested Microsoft's supplying the Israeli military with technology used for its war against Hamas in Gaza. The group said Wednesday that the technology is 'being used to surveil, starve and kill Palestinians.' Microsoft in May fired an employee who interrupted a speech by CEO Satya Nadella to protest the contracts and in April fired two others who interrupted the company's 50th anniversary celebration. On Tuesday, the protesters posted online a call for what they called a 'worker intifada,' using language evoking the Palestinian uprisings against Israeli military occupation that began in 1987. On Wednesday, the police department said it took 18 people into custody 'for multiple charges, including trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction.' It wasn't clear how many were Microsoft employees. No injuries were reported. Microsoft said in a statement after the arrests that it 'will continue to do the hard work needed to uphold its human rights standards in the Middle East, while supporting and taking clear steps to address unlawful actions that damage property, disrupt business or that threaten and harm others.'

AUC Appoints Hala El Said As University Counselor
Yara Sameh The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced the appointment of Hala El Said, economic advisor to the President of Egypt and former minister of planning and economic development, as the new University Counselor. El Said will succeed Tarek Shawki, former minister of education and technical education, who served as University Counselor since May 2023. Shawki will return to his academic role as a faculty member in AUC's Department of Mechanical Engineering at the School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE). 'I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Hala El Said as the new University Counselor. As a member of AUC's senior leadership, Dr. El Said will play a key role in advancing our relationships with national universities, the Supreme Council of Universities and the Egyptian government,' said AUC President Ahmad Dallal, in his message to the AUC community. Dallal also recognized Shawki and extended appreciation for his dedicated service and longstanding commitment to AUC, noting that 'during his term, Dr. Shawki strengthened AUC's collaboration with government bodies and national institutions, supporting the University's mission of public service.' El Said is a distinguished economist, public servant and academic leader. She served as Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Administrative Reform from 2017 to 2019 and as Minister of Planning and Economic Development from 2019 to 2024, where she oversaw the development and update of Egypt's Vision 2030. El Said was previously Chair of The Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the first elected Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, and a member of the Central Bank of Egypt's Board of Directors. Earlier in her career, El Said was Executive Director of the Egyptian Banking Institute, leading it to become the first internationally accredited financial training body in the Middle East and North Africa. She holds a PhD in Economics from Cairo University and has published extensively on financial reform, international finance and economic development. 'I am deeply honored to join AUC as University Counselor, a role dedicated to advancing the University's relationships with national universities, the Supreme Council of Universities, and the Egyptian Government,' said El Said. Israel launches diplomatic attacks on its Western allies ahead of Palestinian statehood recognition
In an escalating international dispute, Israel launched a series of diplomatic attacks against several of its Western allies as they prepare to recognize a Palestinian state next month. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent two strongly worded letters to the leaders of France and Australia, accusing both men of fueling antisemitism with their decision to recognize a state of Palestine. In both letters, Netanyahu cited antisemitic and anti-Israel incidents that occurred in recent months, linking them to the governments' positions on the Gaza war and Palestinian statehood. 'Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on this antisemitic fire', Netanyahu wrote in a letter obtained by CNN to French President Emanuel Macron on Tuesday. 'It is not diplomacy, it is appeasement. It rewards Hamas terror, hardens Hamas's refusal to free the hostages, emboldens those who menace French Jews and encourages the Jew-hatred now stalking your streets.' The acrimonious letter drew a sharp rebuke from the Elysee Palace, which noted that Macron first learned of the Israeli letter through the press before receiving it through diplomatic channels. France 'protects and will always protect its compatriots of the Jewish faith,' the Elysee Palace said in a statement. 'These times demand seriousness and responsibility, not confusion and manipulation.' Netanyahu has 'lost the plot' The tensions are a sign of the growing gulf between Netanyahu and his Western allies – many of whom have become increasingly critical of Israel's war in Gaza, which has destroyed vast swathes of the territory and led to a worsening humanitarian crisis there. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon last week said Netanyahu had 'lost the plot' while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Jyllands-Posten newspaper that 'Netanyahu is now a problem in himself.' Earlier Tuesday, the Israeli prime minister also castigated Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, calling him a 'weak politician,' after his government cancelled the visa of a far-right lawmaker from Netanyahu's governing coalition. Australia and France are two of the latest Western nations to announce plans to recognize a State of Palestine. Canada and Portugal have also announced similar intentions. Next month, they will join more than 140 other countries that already recognize Palestinian statehood. The United Kingdom has conditionally said it will recognize a Palestinian state if Israel does not meet criteria that includes agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza. Netanyahu set a deadline for the leaders of Australia and France to take action against the 'cancer' of antisemitism, calling on them 'to act' before the Jewish New Year on September 23. The date coincides with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly's high-level debate where the countries are expected to recognize a Palestinian state. France says the move is intended to revive the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and bring peace to the region, but Israel and the US have slammed the initiative, calling it a reward for Hamas terror that will only set back efforts for peace. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar revoked the residence visas of Australian representatives in the Palestinian Authority and instructed Israel's embassy in Canberra to scrutinize every official Australian request for a visa to Israel. Netanyahu later attacked Australian Prime Minister Albanese on social media, saying, 'History will remember Albanese for what he is: A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews.' Albanese, speaking to local reporters on Wednesday, said he did not 'take it personally.' He said, 'I treat leaders of other countries with respect, and I engage with them in a diplomatic way.' Burke rebutted Netanyahu's 'weak' accusation, telling public broadcaster the ABC that 'strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up or how many children you can leave hungry.'
