Buttler Was Stunned By Suryavanshi: 'This Guy's The Best Player I Have Ever Seen'
Last Updated:
Jos Buttler recalls thinking that Vaibhav Suryavanshi was 'the best player I have ever seen' while watching him bat against CSK on TV.
Former England captain Jos Buttler was lavish in his praise for Rajasthan Royals' Vaibhav Suryavanshi, recalling how at one stage in IPL 2025 he felt that the 14-year-old talent was the 'best player I have ever seen'.
Buttler had been following Suryavanshi since he was included in the IPL auction list as the youngest-ever (13 years old at the time). The Englishman was then on the receiving end when Suryavanshi hit a 35-ball century, the second quickest in the IPL, against the Titans' quality bowling attack, breaking a plethora of records. He said he felt 'inspired and deflated at the same time' seeing someone so young bat like that.
'And then, the innings against us — you know, our bowling attack consists of Mohammed Siraj, a brilliant international bowler, Prasidh Krishna, an international bowler, Rashid Khan, the best T20 bowler — and he just… the scale of the sixes. They weren't just clearing the boundary — they were big sixes. I mean, you're literally a yard from him. Big sixes. And a 35-ball 100 — it was outrageous," Buttler said on the For the Love of Cricket podcast.
'It's inspiring and deflating at the same time. This guy's 20 years younger than me, and he's just smashing us all around the park. But yeah, absolutely — shockwaves throughout the cricket world," he added.
However, more than the century, Buttler was impressed with Suryavanshi's mature knock against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The teenager scored 57 (33) but offered much more maturity, playing out the early overs and then smashing bowlers at will.
'I was watching on TV. And, you know, Chennai have Ravi Ashwin, Jadeja — proper seasoned pros. And he was like, bang, hit them out into the sand. And then sort of, you know, knocked one out to cover, like, I'm so in control, I'll just take one now, trot down to the other end. And at that moment, I'm like — this guy's the best player I've ever seen. Like, I'm so blown away," he added.
Buttler went onto make what he knew is a 'huge statement', relating Suryavanshi's bat swing to two legendary cricketers.
'But the 100 was incredible, right? He went for every ball. It was like, no fear. Whereas that next knock, it was like — a seasoned pro, just taking down great bowlers, hitting a six when he wanted, getting off strike when he wanted. It was in a run chase as well. So, he was calm. And the swing of the bat is beautiful. He has this amazing bat swing, a bit like — it's a huge statement — Yuvraj Singh slash Brian Lara," he said.

Ahead Of Test Series Against England, Suryakumar Yadav Arrives In London. Reason Is...
India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is currently in London, for right-side sports hernia treatment and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, says a report. While the Indian Test team, led by Shubman Gill, is gearing up for the five-match series against England, the 34-year-old white-ball maestro is utilising the current break in India's limited-overs schedule to focus on his recovery and long-term fitness. According to News24, Suryakumar's treatment will start next week and is expected to return to cricketing field by August. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not issued an official statement, reports suggest the medical procedure could require up to two months of recovery. The timing works in Yadav's favour, as India have no T20I commitments until August, when they travel to Bangladesh for a white-ball tour. That will be followed by home series against South Africa and the West Indies, before an away trip to Australia, all of which are part of India's build-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup. Suryakumar's decision to undergo the procedure now is strategic, allowing him to return fully fit for the crucial upcoming T20 cycle. And he'll be missed — the Mumbai batter has been in red-hot form, particularly in the IPL 2025 season, where he was a standout performer. Leading the charge for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar amassed 717 runs in 16 matches at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.9. Remarkably, he scored 25 or more in all 16 innings, setting a new T20 record for most consecutive 25 scores. His consistency was pivotal in propelling MI to the playoffs, though their campaign ended in Qualifier 2 with a loss to Punjab Kings. Post-IPL, Suryakumar turned up for Triumph Knights MNE in the Mumbai T20 League, but the team managed just one win in five matches, missing out on playoff qualification. He contributed 122 runs in five innings during that stint.
