Time of India17-06-2025
MUMBAI: In a boost for Indian umpiring, JR Madangopal will become only the second Indian umpire other than
Nitin Menon
to stand in Tests currently when he officiates in the first Test between Zimbabwe and South Africa from June 28-July 2, 2025 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
While he has been named as the third umpire in a Test before, and officiated in 42 T20Is and 22 ODIs, this is the first time that the 50-year-old former Tamil Nadu batsman will be standing in the middle in the Test match. Nitin Menon, who is in the ICC Elite Panel, is the only Indian umpire presently who officiates in Test matches.
Madangopal is in the ICC Emerging Umpires Group. In the women's game, he has officiated in two Tests, 11 ODIs & seven T20Is.
Madangopal officiated in the IPL-2025 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad. He played 33 first-class matches (1763 runs@35.26) and 37 List A matches (1189 runs@45.73).

Yuvraj Singh's advice to Indian women's team ahead of World Cup on home soil: 'Play the situation, not the expectation'

Yuvraj Singh, who was part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, urged the Harmanpreet Kaur-led women's team to make the most of a 'great opportunity to create history' in an event marking the 50-day countdown to the Women's World Cup. read more Yuvraj Singh urged the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's team to focus on the process and not worry about the results in the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup. Image: PTI/Reuters Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh urged the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's team to 'play the situation' and 'experience the whole enigma' in the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup, where the Women in Blue will be aiming to end their trophy drought in global events. 'Yuvi' urges Team India to make most of 'great opportunity to create history' Yuvraj, who was part of the Indian team that won the inaugural Men's T20 World Cup in 2007 as well as the ICC World Cup four years later, urged the Indian women's team to believe in themselves while adding that 'experience and self-belief' will be crucial for them in crunch situations, including and especially in the knockouts. '(I would say) play the situation and not the expectation and be in the moment,' Yuvraj said at an event marking the 50-day countdown to the 13th edition of the Women's World Cup, which India will be co-hosting along with Sri Lanka. You have to experience the whole enigma of it. You have to feel that you have put in the process and results will come.' 'But if you want to win the World Cup, you will be in pressure, things won't go well and that's when experience and self-belief has to take over. You have to believe that you want to win the game for your country (on) that day,' the flamboyant left-handed batter, who was the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 World Cup, added. A history of heartbreaks While they have been crowned Asian champions seven out of nine times, the Women in Blue are yet to win an ICC event – either in the ODI or T20I format. India had finished runners-up in the ODI World Cup in 2005 and in 2017, under Anjum Chopra and Mithali Raj's leadership respectively. Harmanpreet, meanwhile, had led the Indians to their only appearance in a T20 World Cup final in Melbourne in 2020. Will Ashwin Join RR As Part Of Samson's Trade Deal? Ex-India Spinner Gives Big Update

Last Updated: Ashwin was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by CSK in the IPL 2025 mega auction, and in the cash-rich league this year, he played nine matches but was only able to take 7 wickets. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was part of the Chennai Super Kings' team in IPL 2025. He was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by the Chennai-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and in the 18th edition of the world's richest franchise cricket league, he picked up seven wickets in nine matches for them in addition to scoring 32 runs with the bat. Ashwin's performance by his own standards was a very forgettable one in the IPL this year, and as a result there were talks about CSK releasing him ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. It was reported last week that Ashwin has asked CSK to release him, and there were also reports that he could join Rajasthan Royals, for whom he played from 2022 to 2024, as part of a trade deal for Sanju Samson. When asked if he is going to be part of CSK in the IPL next year by Vimal Kumar, Ashwin said, 'Mere hath mein kuch nahi hai. Maine sirf clarity manga hai… mera abhi communication kuch hua nahi hai. Clarity toh maine bahut pehle he manga. Maine kya kiya, mera role kaisa hai, mai kaise better kar sakta hu – ye sab sawal maine already puch liya hai kyuki maine last year 9 games khela tha. In all these years of playing in the IPL, that was the first year jisme maine sirf 9 games khela. Hamesha mein har game khela tha, jo bhi franchise ke liye mai khela. So clarity meri taraf se manga maine; IPL ke time par he mang liya tha." 'Abhi tak mujhe koi information nahi hai. Classified information nahi hai ki Sanju idhar (CSK) aa raha hai aur mai udhar (RR) ja raha hu." If CSK decide to trade Samson ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, then the Chennai-based team will have to sign him for Rs 18 crore – the price for which Samson was retained by RR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Or they can trade him in a player deal, but for that Ashwin won't be enough because Samson's price in IPL 2025 was Rs 18 crore, whereas Ashwin was signed for Rs 9.75 crore. CSK will have to give Rs 8.25 crore more to RR in addition to Ashwin or include players worth Rs 8.25 crore more to acquire Samson's services. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
