Republican Party of Florida joins ballot initiative lawsuit in federal court
A federal court has given the Republican Party of Florida the green light to intervene in the legal challenge to Florida's recently enacted law (HB 1205) overhauling the processes used to collect signatures for ballot initiatives.
'We're pleased the court has recognized our stake in defending Florida's election integrity laws. This is an important first step in securing transparency, accountability, and the millions of Floridians,' Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power said in a prepared release.
'We will continue fighting to protect the integrity of Florida's ballot and ensure voters are informed and confident in the process.'
Florida Decides Healthcare and Smart & Safe Florida have challenged the new law — which was a top priority for Gov. Ron DeSantis — on ground that it violates their rights to free speech and due process.
Florida Decides is working to put before the voters in November 2026 a proposed constitutional amendment to expand Medicaid to lower income childless adults, as allowed under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. Smart & Safe Florida wants to put an amendment to legalize marijuana for adults on the ballot in November 2026.
Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker listened to about three hours of testimony late last week on Florida Decides' and Smart & Safe Florida's request that he block certain provisions of the law while the legal challenge moves ahead — including a requirement that sponsors turn in completed petitions within 10 days after the voter signs the petition, as well as stepped up fines and criminal penalties.
Florida legislators passed the law after citizens' initiatives to allow abortion and recreational pot nearly passed last November. Critics contend that the new law — with all of its restrictions on groups and who can collect signatures — will make it nearly impossible for outside organizations to ever place an initiative on the ballot in the future.
Supporters argue the law targets fraud in the initiative process.

Minnesota DHS moves to terminate housing stability program amid fraud investigation
The Minnesota Department of Human Services says it's making moves to terminate the Housing Stabilization Services program as federal authorities investigate fraud tied to the program. DHS' Temporary Commissioner Shireen Gandhi wrote a letter Friday to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requesting to end the program. Housing Stabilization Services is a newer Minnesota Medical Assistance benefit meant to help find and maintain homes for people with disabilities or the elderly. But a search warrant filed earlier this month in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota details a "massive scheme to defraud" the program. "DHS is rooting out fraud wherever we find it. We cannot allow one more cent of taxpayer money going out the door to providers who claim to serve Minnesotans in need of stable housing while lining their pockets for personal gain," said DHS Temporary Commissioner Shireen Gandhi. "As I made clear in my letter to CMS, our own data analysis has shown that this program does not have the necessary controls to stop bad actors, and we are urging CMS to approve our request to end this program as swiftly as possible." What was originally estimated in 2020 to cost taxpayers about $2.5 million a year ended up costing $104 million in 2024. The FBI in the warrant called the housing program "extremely vulnerable to fraud." Earlier this week, Gov. Tim Walz said he'd stopped payments to 50 program recipients. DHS said it has since issued 11 payment withholds to HSS providers. DHS Inspector General James Clark said a data analysis revealed "too many fraudulent, unqualified bad actors have likely stolen money from our state's taxpayers, and also cheated Minnesotans who need housing services." The human services department added that it intends to redesign and relaunch the benefit, working with the legislature and providers to create a robust program.

A Catalog of Losses Under Trump
To the Editor: Re 'This Is Why America Needs Public Media' (editorial, July 20): Rural supporters of President Trump across the country are now likely to lose public media upon which they rely. They are also threatened with the loss of Medicaid and Affordable Care Act benefits; the shuttering of rural hospitals; the arrest and deportation of respected community members; a shortage of farm workers at harvest time; a tariff-driven rise in prices of food, clothing and other essentials, combined with problems marketing produce overseas; the dismantling of effective warning systems for tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and wildfires; and a weakened FEMA response to the subsequent devastation. Abandonment of green energy initiatives and infrastructure projects will eliminate much-needed jobs and community development opportunities and ultimately lead to more droughts and flooding. Cuts to school funding will disproportionately affect the education of Trump supporters' children. One might cynically observe that Trump voters are reaping what they have sown, but in truth, they were the victims of a con job. And no one deserves to be conned. Lawrence KaplanArdsley, N.Y. 'Rage Against the Regime' Protests Expand Across Nation for August 2
Plans for a series of demonstrations dubbed the "Rage Against the Regime" protests have expanded across the nation in advance of their August 2 date. Earlier this week, the 50501 movement, which is coordinating the protests, said that there were 300 protests set to take place against President Donald Trump this weekend. But on Friday, the figure was updated to 425. Newsweek reached out to 50501 via email for comment. Since assuming office in January, Trump has been hit with multiple coordinated protests from different groups. One took place on the Memorial Day weekend, while others targeted Flag Day and Trump's birthday. The protests have spanned international borders. Protesters in Scotland demonstrated against Trump's recent visit to the country. Issues the American public has taken umbrage with include cuts overseen by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump's tariff policies, and his handling of the economy more broadly, as well as his administration's response to files associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, Trump still commands support from his base. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the protests, which will take place in all states in the country and in major cities including Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston. The events are coordinated by 278 linked groups. Organizers expressed concerns about the Epstein case, as well as cuts to government programs and agencies, in particular. The name of the protest day is a play on the name of the rock band Rage Against the Machine, which is known for anti-authoritarian messages, though there is no suggestion that the band is affiliated with the protests. In a press release, organizers called for "a mass mobilization to channel our collective rage against the Trump administration for its weaponization of ICE against our communities, construction of concentration camps, covering up the Epstein files, attacks on transgender rights, and its dismantling of Medicaid, SNAP, USAID, the Department of Education, NOAA, and the National Weather Service into collective action." The Center for American Progress, Saturday on X: "If just 3.5% of Americans-12 million people-mobilize to peacefully protest the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration, it would be virtually impossible for the government to ignore their demands."
