
Sorry Mr Trump But Your American Cars Won't Sell In Japan. Here's Why.
President Trump is chuffed about his recent trade deal with Japan calling it the greatest in U.S. history. "I just signed the largest trade deal in history, I think maybe the largest deal in history with Japan," Trump boasted at the White House on Tuesday evening. Japan also agreed to invest $550bn in the U.S. economy although no details were forthcoming as to which industries or sectors would benefit.

Meanwhile Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba welcomed the announcement of the 15% reciprocal tariffs—down from 25%, stressing that it was "the lowest figure to date among countries with trade surpluses with the US'.
Japan's stock market soared at news of 15% trade deal
News of the deal was well-received by the Japanese stock market which saw shares soar with Mazda rising 17%, Toyota swelling by 15%, Mitsubishi up 13%, Honda increasing 11% and Nissan jumping 8%. Mazda, a carmaker who builds the majority of its vehicles in Japan, was particularly concerned about the proposed 25% tariffs.
A quarter of Japan's US exports are from its critical automotive sector, which accounts for almost 3% of its economy. And it's with the auto sector that Trump really seems to have no idea what's really happening.
The truth is two-fold. Firstly, before Trump started threatening Japan with tariffs, American cars entering the Japanese market, including Jeep, Cadillac and Corvette, were charged a zero tariff. Zilch! Japan has not charged tariffs or imports duties on imported cars from the U.S., or Europe for that matter, since the late 1970s. In contrast, America had imposed a 2.5% tariff on Japanese imports.

But that's only part of the issue. Trump has continually complained that Japan does not take American cars. He has repeatedly said that the Asian nation is not open to U.S. vehicles. After this major trade deal announcement with Japan, Trump is bloating that the country will now open up to U.S. cars, trucks, rice and other agricultural products.
Hey, buddy, that is not the reality. Japan is, and always has been open and ready to take all the American cars you wish to export. The bottom line is—apart from Jeep, which is the biggest selling American car in Japan, and a smattering of Cadillac and Corvette models, Japanese motorists, for the most part, don't want to buy American cars. Not even Tesla EVs, which do sell in Japan, but are imported from China, so not really seen as American.
The fact is that old impressions die hard. From the 1970s through to the early 21st century, a mixture of U.S. cars were offered in Japan—including Ford, GM, Pontiac and Buick, in addition to Chrysler. But even though some brands delivered more stylish designs or more powerful engines than their Japanese counterparts, most American cars were considered too big for Japanese roads and carparks, and not as fuel-efficient or as reliable as Japanese cars, which were, on average, a little cheaper. Other critical factors that led to several brands exiting Japan, like Ford in 2016, were insufficient product lineups, and a poor dealer network.
So, with all that in mind Mr Trump, to be honest, it does not matter how many American cars you force on the Japanese market, I cannot see how U.S. brands will sell here, no matter what Trump says. Japanese don't want them. It's like trying to force-feed sushi with wasabi to blue collar American families in the Rust Belt—it is a really tough sell.

Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda take a big hit from Trump's tariffs
President Donald Trump said he would lower tariffs on Japan, but the impact of his tariff policy continues to shake Japan's auto industry. Toyota said in its earnings report on Thursday that it expected Trump's auto tariffs to reduce its operating income for the 2026 fiscal year by 1.4 trillion Japanese yen, or $9.5 billion. That's 1.2 trillion Japanese yen higher than what it had initially forecast. Toyota said the tariffs caused its operating income for the North American market to decline. The company cited "exchange rate fluctuations and increased expenses" for the fall in operating income in the Japanese market. "Due to the impact of US tariffs and other factors, actual results showed decreased operating income, and the forecast has been revised downward," Toyota said in its first-quarter results summary. Honda reported a 50% fall in year-over-year operating profits on Wednesday. The automaker said that the tariffs had cost it around 122 billion Japanese yen in lost profits in the past three months, and warned the total hit this year could be as much as 450 billion Japanese yen. Honda executives, however, said the impact of the tariffs would be less severe than initially expected, and the company raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 40%. Automakers like Toyota and Honda were given a reprieve last month after the US and Japan struck a trade deal. The deal, which lowered the tariff on Japanese auto imports to the US market from 25% to 15%, means that Japanese automakers face lower tariffs than their American rivals Ford and GM, who face a 25% tax on vehicle parts coming from overseas. Last week, Ford CEO Jim Farley warned that the trade deal handed Japan's car giants a "meaningful advantage," telling Bloomberg that it could allow Toyota to undercut some Ford models by as much as $10,000.

'Her discipline, message, dialogue, accommodating the U.S. on security and on migration have all helped,' said the former American official who worked on U.S.-Mexico issues during the first Trump administration. 'And given how Trump sometimes is given to just impromptu comments, it's kept them from getting zapped on something bigger just because Trump was angered by something.' And White House officials say Sheinbaum's willingness to cooperate on Trump's top priorities — migration and fentanyl — has bought her goodwill in the West Wing. In addition to her troop deployment and extradition efforts, Sheinbaum has ramped up drug enforcement by seizing fentanyl precursors, raiding opioid labs and arresting cartel members. Crucially, she has not issued retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. and has remained warm in how she talks about Mexico's relationship with its northern neighbor. In April, Canada announced countertariffs on American products, including 25 percent on certain autos, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has spoken out forcefully against American tariffs, which he has called a 'direct attack' on his country. So far, the White House appears appreciative of Sheinbaum's approach. 'They've been more forthright,' said a second White House official. 'They've handled this better.' Sheinbaum has been deliberate in her relationship with Trump. She has received counsel on how to approach the U.S. president from both her predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who had a warm relationship with Trump during his first term, and prominent Mexican business leaders with ties to Trump world, according to three of the former U.S. and Mexican officials. Sheinbaum, a physicist who completed her postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley, speaks English, including during calls with Trump. She has also earned a reputation for the data-driven approach she takes to their conversations, including citing the U.S.'s own data to show Trump that seizures of fentanyl at the U.S.-Mexico border have dropped dramatically. 'If you look at what the Mexican government has put out, and what she has said herself in the press conferences that she gives, she has been crystal clear about what Mexico is doing on the number of issues that affect both Mexico and the U.S. with clear data and clear follow up,' said one Mexican official. 'It's a clear roadmap with clear benchmarks and clear indicators, and I think that's a language that Americans speak.'

U.S. Trade Tumbles $1 Billion, More For These Seven Nations, Data Shows
U.S. trade with Ireland has fallen when compared to the previous two months of June, 7.38% from the previous June and 19.59% from June of 2023. Ireland's U.S. trade fell more in June from the previous month than any other country, down $6.95 billion, a decline of 46.34%. The total was less than one-quarter of the total for each of the first three months of 2025, as importers rushed to avoid tariffs that President Trump had threatened. After a blistering first quarter fueled by a pre-tariff rush, U.S. trade with the world fell for the third consecutive month, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday. Total U.S. trade was $445.40 billion in June, down 3.08% from May. In May, trade had fallen for the second month in a row, albeit a scant 1.11%. In April, U.S. trade with the world had taken a real tumble, down 12.91% from March. March was the tail-end of a blistering first quarter as importers rushed to get their goods into the United States ahead of tariffs on the world that Trump said would go into effect on April 2. Since then, the president has paused, increased and decreased those tariffs a number of times, the most recent deadline having been Aug. 1. Trade goes up and down on a monthly basis, but the last time U.S. trade fell three or more consecutive months was the four months from November 2023 through February of 2024. On a monthly basis, the following countries saw their trade fall at least $1 billion from the previous month: Ireland, down $6.95 billion. Ireland, a hub for U.S. pharmaceutical imports, saw its trade decline 46.34% from May to $8.05 billion. That's less than one-fourth of the March total, which was $32.13 billion and the lowest monthly total since February of 2024. Switzerland, down $2.68 billion. Switzerland, a hub for U.S. gold trade, particularly on the import side, saw its trade decline 24.70% in June from May, from $10.86 billion to $8.18 billion. For the months of January, February and March, Swiss trade with the United States was more than triple the total for June. U.S. trade with Switzerland is, however, up 30.56% from the previous June. I wrote about U.S. trade with Switzerland one day ago. Mexico, down $1.54 billion. The nation's top trade partner, Mexico saw its trade decline only 2.07% from May, below the 3.08% U.S. average with the world. The $72.98 billion total for June is the fourth highest monthly total in the last two years. Germany, down $1.36 billion. Germany's trade with the United States fell from $19.77 billion to $18.41 billion in June, a decline of 6.89%. Its U.S. trade, however, has been remarkably consistent compared to U.S. trade with other countries and given the volatile trade environment President Trump has created with the European Union. Excluding the $23.78 billion total in March, it has ranged from a low of $18.33 billion to a high of $20.86 billion over the last 24 months. France, down $1.35 billion. France is one of the four countries with a double-digit decline in June as well as a drop in excess of $1 billion from the previous month, Switzerland, Ireland and Hong Kong being the other three. France's trade with the United States fell 13.45%, from $10.03 billion to $8.68 billion. Hong Kong, down $1.28 billion. Hong Kong's 32.85% one-month decrease from May is second only to Ireland's 46.34% decline. Hong Kong trade fell from $3.71 billion in May to $2.49 billion in June. Its U.S. trade is down 14.40% from the previous June and 22.05% from June of 2023. Among the trade partners in this group, those are the steepest declines for those time periods. (The Census Bureau reports data for Hong Kong separate from China data as it does with Macau though both are controlled by China.) The Netherlands, down $1.21 billion. Unlike the other countries on this list and despite seeing its trade decline more than $1 billion, the $11.09 billion total is the fourth-highest total over the last two years, with March, May and April of this year the top three. It is also one of two 'countries' on this list, the other being Hong Kong, with which the United States regularly runs a surplus. Despite trade falling in June for the third consecutive month, U.S. trade with the world year-to-date is up 9.59% to $2.71 trillion. Through June, Mexico is the dominant U.S. trade partner. Mexico remains the top-ranked trade partner YTD though Canada ranked first for the month of June. JFK International Airport remains the nation's top-ranked port, followed by Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Port Laredo. But Port Laredo, the nation's top port last year, ranked first for the month of June. The top-ranked export category, civilian aircraft and fuselage parts, experienced its best June in more than a decade. Among U.S. exports, civilian aircraft and parts remains top-ranked followed by three energy exports, oil, refined petroleum products and natural gas, including LNG. Among U.S. imports, computers and computer hardware is the leading import, fueled by the needs of the explosive artificial intelligence industry and its need for computing power. At the national level, U.S. exports increased 4.59% to $1.01 trillion, the first time exports have topped $1 trillion halfway through the year. U.S. imports have increased at almost three times that pace, up 12.82% to $1.70 trillion. The U.S. deficit increased to $682.35 billion, an increase of 27.76% from the same six months of 2024. Total trade, total exports, total imports and the U.S. deficit are all running at record paces through the first half of the year. The percentage of U.S. trade that was an export – a relatively stable statistic, stood at 37% through June, down from 39% the last two years. The data shows a tale of two halves: a frenzied first quarter followed by a three-month slowdown. The question now is whether this recent decline is a temporary blip or the first sign that the president's trade policies are beginning to cool the U.S. trade and, perhaps, the economy.
