Niles North grads urged to persevere, dream at commencement Sunday

Niles North High School seniors lined up excitedly in their purple graduation robes and mortar boards Sunday for the school's 2025 commencement ceremony.
The graduation was the first to be held outside of Niles Township High School District 219 grounds, at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston. Niles West High School seniors also graduated earlier in the day at the same venue. Students from Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles and Skokie attend the Skokie schools.
Niles North Principal Marlon Felton, in his first year as the school's principal, congratulated the class of 2025 in his encouraging remarks to them and their families.
'Seniors, as you step into the next chapter of your life, whether it's a college, a career, the military, a gap year or the pursuit of a dream yet to be defined, remember this. Success is not a straight line. It's messy, it's challenging and it often asks you to fail before you fly,' Felton said.
'But you already know how to persevere. You've shown us that. And you carry within you the courage, creativity and compassion that this world so desperately needs.'
Seniors Aaqib Shareef and Emilia Cohen spoke to their graduating class about their time at Niles North and what they learned from it.
'Good times consist of collections of beautiful moments, not one singular moment in the future where you get everything you've ever dreamed of,' said Cohen.
'Over our senior year, you have consistently been told about the future,' Shareef said. 'While that is crucial, you must take time to ground yourself in the now. Before we take our next steps into the world, it is your turn to live the questions, Who am I? Because I am who I am.'
Senior Olivia Russell sang Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide' to commemorate her four years at Niles North.
'Olivia chose this song because the lyrics remind them of how scary it can be to grow up and move on, but how important it is reflect on the experiences you've had,' said Assistant Principal of Operations Julianne Evans.

In The 'Handmaid's Tale' Finale, A Fan Favourite Made An Unexpected Return: 'It Was An Immediate Yes'

Spoilers for the finale of The Handmaid's Tale below. Blessed be the fruit, indeed. Today, after six seasons, The Handmaid's Tale came to an end with the finale airing in the US on Hulu. While UK viewers - watching on Channel 4 and Amazon Prime video — will have to wait a little longer to see the finale, those who have seen the show were treated to a very unexpected cameo. Viewers who've made it all the way to the end were treated to an appearance by Alexis Bledel, who — as Elisabeth Moss walked around her former Gilead neighbourhood — returned eight years after her last appearance, saying 'Blessed be the fruit' and shocking June, along with audiences. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE Bledel unexpectedly left the show at the end of season four. The series explained her absence in series five, claiming she'd gone back to Gilead to fight and find Aunt Lydia, after saying goodbye to her wife and son. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the cameo, Bledel revealed: 'It was an immediate yes. It felt right to bring closure to Emily's journey and offer the audience a sense of completion. Bruce [Miller, the series creator who wrote the final episode] put together such a kind and talented group, and so many of the original crew were still there in season six. The production runs like a well-oiled machine — everyone brings their best. I'm excited to see what they create in [sequel series] The Testaments.' In the show's finale, Emily and June took a walk around the neighbourhood (as they had many times in previous series) where Bledel's character revealed she had been a Martha for a Commander and she had managed to keep contact with her family. 'They're the reason I'm fighting,' she says. The appearance ended with an emotional dream sequence, where June imagines they women were never in Gilead and sees the two of them — along with Moira (Samira Wiley), Janine (Madeline Brewer), Rita (Amanda Brugel) and killed handmaids Alma (Nina Kiri) and Brianna (Bahia Watson) — together and singing karaoke in a bar to 'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac. The Handmaid's Tale airs on Channel 4 and Prime Video in the UK – you can sign up now for a free 30-day Prime Video trial. ELLE Collective is a new community of fashion, beauty and culture lovers.
