JAKARTA: Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono (pic) has called for restraint amid escalating global tensions and reaffirmed Jakarta's readiness to support international peace efforts.
Speaking alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a joint press conference in Moscow on Tuesday (June 17), Sugiono stressed the importance of diplomacy in resolving disputes.
"We agreed that any escalation must be stopped and that disputes should be brought to the negotiation table,' he said, in remarks released by Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry.
His comments followed Lavrov's remarks on tensions in the Middle East and came as part of broader talks on regional and global issues, including cooperation under Brics and Asean frameworks.
Sugiono said Indonesia was prepared to contribute to peacebuilding efforts and mediate where needed.
"I also offer Indonesia's assistance in bridging communication gaps and differences, and in helping to reduce tensions both regionally and globally, so that we can contribute to a peaceful environment in various parts of the world,' he added.
The two ministers pledged to deepen cooperation across key sectors, including politics and security, trade and investment, and food and energy security.
They also agreed to upgrade ties to a Strategic Partnership.
They welcomed closer official contacts between the two countries, saying these had led to new cooperation initiatives, including in education and library programmes.
Sugiono's visit precedes President Prabowo Subianto's June 19 to 20 trip to meet President Vladimir Putin and attend the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
The visit also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Russia, established in February 1950. _ Bernama

Tok Mat to lead M'sian delegation at OIC foreign ministers meet in Istanbul
PUTRAJAYA: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will lead Malaysia's delegation to the 51st Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Turkiye, from June 21 to 22, 2025. Wisma Putra, in a statement Thursday (June 19), said that the meeting will involve the participation of foreign ministers and representatives from 57 OIC member states. "The Foreign Minister will deliver a National Statement highlighting Malaysia's views and position on issues of common concern under the OIC, such as the situation in Palestine and their right to self-determination," said the ministry. The National Statement will also address the rise of Islamophobia and all forms of hatred towards religion, emphasise economic cooperation, and initiatives that Malaysia has undertaken in pursuing the objectives of the OIC, it added. With the theme of "OIC in a Transforming World", this meeting is expected to deliberate and agree on common approaches for addressing the political, socio-economic, and cultural challenges faced by the Ummah, through the adoption of the Istanbul Declaration and nearly 146 proposed resolutions, the ministry stated. The meeting also serves as a platform to expand cooperation and solidarity among OIC Member States in promoting peace and security for the Ummah and the global community at large, particularly amid the current escalating tensions in the Middle East region, it said. - Bernama

Saudi Lets Off 47 M'sian Pilgrims With Warning
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- The 47 Malaysian pilgrims who violated the haj permit regulation after being duped by a local agent were only given a warning by the Saudi Arabian government. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the pilgrims' release was due to the consistent discipline and good track record shown by Malaysian haj pilgrims in the Holy Land. 'Our number (of pilgrims involved) is small compared to other countries, and Malaysia has always maintained a good track record. 'Based on the information I have, there were no fines imposed, meaning the Saudi government has given them a chance and only issued a warning,' he told reporters. He was speaking at the PPZ-MAIWP Kasih Medik programme, which involved a financial aid contribution for patient transportation at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Hemodialysis Centre here today. Mohd Na'im noted that Malaysia continues to enjoy various privileges and relaxations from the Saudi government, including the early issuance of the Nusuk card - a facility not extended to pilgrims from other countries. 'That is why I urge everyone not to let one mistake jeopardise future privileges for other Malaysian pilgrims,' he said. Mohd Na'im also advised Malaysians to learn from this incident and to only use official channels when performing the haj. The media previously reported that the pilgrimage of 47 senior citizens turned into an ordeal after they were duped by a local agent, forcing them to take risky routes to reach Makkah from Jeddah due to Saudi Arabia's strict enforcement against unauthorised haj pilgrims.
