Evacuations lifted after fire in southeastern San Diego County
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Firefighters responded to a vegetation fire burning in the southeastern portion of San Diego County near the U.S.-Mexico Border late Friday morning. According to Cal Fire/San Diego County Fire, the blaze, dubbed the Roadrunner Fire, was reported just before noon near Roadrunner Lane and Moonlit Trail in the census-designated place of Boulevard, east of Campo. The forward rate of spread was stopped just before 2 p.m., Cal Fire confirmed on X. When it was initially reported, the fire had burned 10 acres shortly before noon. In an update just before 1:30 p.m., Cal Fire stated the fire was about 88 acres and 5% contained. Evacuation orders and warnings were issued due to the fire. The evacuation orders and warnings have since been lifted. The Golden Acorn Casino at 1800 Golden Acorn Way in Boulevard was designated as the evacuation point. Fire extinguished in Spain's famous Cordoba mosque-cathedral
Firefighters have extinguished a massive blaze that was burning in the historic mosque-turned-cathedral in the southern Spanish city of Cordoba. The "rapid and magnificent intervention" of firefighters "averted a catastrophe," Cordoba Mayor Jose Mara Bellido posted on X. The fire is out, he said, adding that firefighters and police would remain on site overnight. Widely shared videos had shown flames and smoke billowing from inside the monument, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and is a major tourist attraction. The blaze broke out around 9 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT) in one of the chapels in the Almanzor naves, according to Spain's El Mundo newspaper. It may have been caused by a short circuit in an electric sweeper, El Mundo and local media reported without elaborating on why. Three fire teams managed to control the fire and extinguished it within a short period. After putting the fire out, firefighters continued to cool the monument's walls and roofs to prevent the fire from reigniting, El Mundo said. Now a cathedral, the building was originally a mosque between the 8th and 10th centuries that is considered a jewel of Islamic architecture. After Christians reconquered Spain in the 13th century under King Ferdinand III of Castile, the building was converted into a cathedral and architectural alterations were made over following centuries. Crews fight to contain Grand Canyon fire as heat, winds prevail
Crews have made gains this week in containing the year's largest wildfire, a scorcher that's burned across Grand Canyon National Park's northern rim and destroyed dozens of structures including a historic lodge. Containment of the Dragon Bravo Fire, now at 36 percent, nearly doubled between Wednesday and Thursday and has continued to climb despite 'strong and unpredictable winds,' the fire management team said in an update Friday morning. But those wins came after a massive expansion of the fire last week, driven by record low humidity and hot, dry weather.
