The death toll from a rockfall at a limestone quarry on Indonesia's Java island rose to 18 on Sunday, with another seven people still missing and feared dead, a military official said.
Workers and heavy equipment were buried when rocks suddenly fell at the mining site in the city of Cirebon in West Java province on Friday morning.
The rockfall also injured at least 12 people.
"Today, we retrieved one more body, which brings the total death toll to 18 people, while seven more people are still missing," local military chief Mukhammad Yusron said.
"We suspect the missing victims have already died."
Rescuers have deployed excavators and rescue dogs to search for the remaining victims, Mukhammad said.
He said the search operation was challenging and dangerous due to the unstable structures of the rock.
"We must pay attention to the rescuers' safety because there have been more rockfalls during the operation."
The local company overseeing the mine was operating legally. Still, safety standards were lacking, according to West Java governor Dedi Mulyadi, who said he had ordered its closure following the accident.
"I have issued an order to my subordinates at the site. The company has been shut down permanently," he said in a statement earlier this week.
Friday's incident was the second collapse at the quarry, following an incident in February but no casualties were reported then.
Mining accidents are common across the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago, especially in unlicensed sites where safety protocols are often ignored. (AFP)

World War II bombs defused in Cologne after evacuation

World War II bombs defused in Cologne after evacuation Ambulances prepare to evacuate a hospital in Cologne-Deutz. Photo: AFP Jamie Clarke reports Over 20,000 people were evacuated from central Cologne on Wednesday after three unexploded World War II bombs were found, the biggest such operation in the German city since the end of the war. Bomb squad technicians defused the three American explosives, two weighing 1,000kg and one 500kg, at 7:19pm (1719 GMT) on Wednesday, having earlier set up an evacuation zone of about 10,000 square metres for 12 hours. Road and train lines were closed throughout the day, and city officials went door to door, vacating about 20,000 people from their homes and closing 58 hotels as well as numerous restaurants and businesses. The heart of the city was left deserted, with a hospital, two old people's homes, nine schools and a TV studio evacuated. Weddings had to be relocated from Cologne's town hall, and a man was taken into custody after trying to break through a barrier and enter the zone, local authorities said. The bombs had been found during building work on Monday in the Deutz area on the east bank of the River Rhine. German construction sites have regularly unearthed unexploded World War II ordnance. In Frankfurt, the discovery of a 1.4-tonne bomb in 2017 led to the removal of 65,000 people, the biggest such evacuation in Europe since 1945. In 2021, four people were injured when a World War II bomb exploded at a building site near Munich's main railway station, scattering debris over hundreds of metres. (AFP)

Gauff, Boisson win through at French Open

Gauff, Boisson win through at French Open Coco Gauff celebrates after she beats Madison Keys in the French Open quarterfinal. Photo: Reuters Coco Gauff battled back from a set down to beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an error-strewn French Open quarterfinal on Wednesday. That set up a semifinal showdown with France's 361st-ranked Lois Boisson. The second seed Gauff battled past her fellow American 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-1 in a tense last-eight clash littered with a whopping 14 double-faults and 101 unforced errors. "It means a lot, especially getting through this tough match today, it wasn't an easy match and I'm very happy to get through it," Gauff said. "I'm so excited to be in the semifinals back here again and have a lot more work to do. Just savour this one today and then next one tomorrow." Keys came through a tense first set in a tie-break after blowing a 4-1 lead with a double-break, but Gauff upped her level enough to fight back. The 21-year-old was the runner-up to Iga Swiatek in a one-sided showpiece match in 2022. Keys had been hoping to challenge for a second consecutive Grand Slam title, but failed to reach the semifinals in Paris for a second time. Boisson, meanwhile, continued her dream run at Roland Garros, defeating world number six Mirra Andreeva to advance to the final four. Boisson won a thrilling battle 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 against Russian Andreeva. (AFP)

Man City sign Milan midfielder Reijnders for 55m euros

Man City sign Milan midfielder Reijnders for 55m euros Tijjani Reijnders shows off his most valuable player award for the season in Milan. File photo: AFP Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from Serie A side AC Milan on a five-year contract worth 55 million euros, a team source confirmed on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders joined Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract, which he further extended until 2030 in March. He has made 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning one Italian Supercup title. He impressed during the 2024-25 season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions as he was named the Serie A's best midfielder, despite Milan finishing eighth in the league. Reijnders has also made 22 appearances for the Netherlands. His signing will boost Pep Guardiola's options in midfield following Kevin De Bruyne's departure, who will leave after a decade at the club having lifted six Premier League titles, as well as winning the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2023. City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season and only secured a Champions League berth on the final day of the campaign. They are next in action at the Club World Cup and face Wydad AC in their opening game on June 18, before taking on Al-Ain and Juventus in their Group G fixtures. (Reuters)
