MetMalaysia issues Level One heat alert for parts of Perak, Pahang and Sarawak as temperatures hit 35°C
In a Facebook post today, MetMalaysia said the affected areas in the peninsula are Kampar in Perak, and Maran and Rompin in Pahang.
In Sarawak, the areas involved are Marudi, Mukah, Sibu, Kanowit, Sarikei, Sri Aman, Lundu, Bau and Kuching.
The alert level refers to a daily maximum temperature of between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.

Sarawak firefighters battle bushfire in Kampung Nelayan 5, Kuala Baram; 2.23 acres burned
MIRI, Aug 1 — Firefighters successfully extinguished a bushfire that broke out in Kampung Nelayan 5, Kuala Baram here last night. The Lutong fire station said an emergency call was received at 7.50pm. Firefighters were promptly deployed to the scene approximately 5km away. 'Upon arrival, the team found an active blaze spanning about 2.23 acres at the reported location. 'After doing a size-up, a 100-foot hose and two fire beaters were used to bring the fire under control,' the station said in a statement. Due to the scale of the flames, firefighters had to replenish the fire engine's water tank twice using a nearby fire hydrant before successfully extinguishing the blaze. The operation concluded at 8.43pm, with the team returning to the station after ensuring the surrounding area was safe. An additional team was subsequently dispatched to the location to continue monitoring to ensure the fire did not reignite. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire. — The Borneo Post

Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes Indonesia's Maluku Sea
KUALA LUMPUR: An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's southern Maluku Sea this morning. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the quake occurred at a depth of 114km, about 177km northwest of West Papua. The tremor comes just days after a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami warnings across several Pacific nations. Waves of up to four metres were recorded in parts of Kamchatka, prompting evacuations in Russia, Japan, Hawaii and along the US West Coast. Most warnings have since been lifted, with no major damage reported.

(Photo Credit Kyodo) TOKYO, July 31 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- The Japan Meteorological Agency on Thursday lifted the last remaining tsunami advisories issued after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula the previous day, Kyodo News Agency reported. The agency had sent warnings for areas from Hokkaido in northern Japan to Wakayama Prefecture in the west, but they were downgraded to advisories on Wednesday night. Tsunami continued to reach the shores, with some locations seeing larger waves arrive on Thursday. Some of the advisories were lifted Thursday morning, leaving those mainly covering the Pacific coasts of the northern main island of Hokkaido and northeastern Japan. bootstrap slideshow At least 10 locations recorded larger waves early on Thursday than on Wednesday, with Tokachi Port in Hokkaido and Oarai in Ibaraki Prefecture seeing tsunami as high as 70 centimetres. Kayoko Nakajima, 76, was one of around a dozen people who sought refuge at a municipal office in Kushiro, Hokkaido. "The floor was hard and cold, and I couldn't sleep well due to the noise," she recalled.
