
Is Seoul getting hotter?
Last year, Seoul recorded 48 tropical nights – the longest in its history – with daytime temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius even in November.
While rising temperatures are a worldwide phenomenon due to global warming, within South Korea, Seoul is warming at an even faster pace. The heat island effect is amplifying this trend, according to data and predictions by the government and meteorologists.
Seoul's rapid warming
Meteorologist Kim Hae-dong, a professor in the Department of Global Environment at Keimyung University, predicts that this summer will be as hot as last year, based on climate forecasts from Korean and Japanese meteorological agencies and the World Meteorological Organization.
He attributes the intensifying heat to the growing influence of the Tibetan High, a massive high-pressure system over East Asia. This marks a shift from Korea's traditional summer climate, which was primarily influenced by the North Pacific High.
"Due to global warming, snow-covered areas in Tibet have been shrinking, leading to rising temperatures within the Tibetan High,' he explained. 'Additionally, reduced snowfall in China's inland regions has resulted in drier soil and higher land temperatures. As a result, heated air rises and is then transported toward South Korea, intensifying summer heat waves.'
While the nation's temperature will continue to rise, meteorologists, including Kim, and the government predicted that the capital city's temperature rise will be faster than other cities despite its northern latitude.
Seoul -- now home to about 20 percent of Korea's population -- has seen a rapid temperature increase over the past century.
Average temperatures in several major cities across OECD countries have increased by more than 10 percent between 2013 and 2019, according to Utility Bidder, a UK-based energy consulting firm. Among the 28 countries analyzed, Seoul ranked fourth, with an average temperature rise of 10.03 percent, following Ankara (18.24 percent), Tallinn (15.8 percent) and Helsinki (14.93 percent).
Seoul's average temperature rose from 10.4 degrees Celsius in 1908 to 14.9 degrees Celsius in 2024, according to the data from the Korea Meteorological Administration.
When compared with other five regions that have comparable, early-year data, Seoul and Daegu showed the largest increases, warming by 1.9 and 2 degrees Celsius, respectively, between 1912 and 2020, according to the KMA's 2021 report '109 Years of Climate Change Analysis.' The latter is located in a basin surrounded by mountain. Other regions experienced smaller increases: Gangneung by 1.6 degrees, Incheon by 1.7 degrees, Busan by 1.5 degrees and Mokpo by 0.8 degree.
Why? Urbanization
Meteorologists attribute Seoul's rapid warming largely to its urbanization.
Urbanization alone accounted for 30 to 45 percent of Korea's temperature increase between 1973 and 2014, with the rest attributed to global warming, according to Choi Young-eun, a meteorologist and professor of geography at Konkuk University. In Europe, urbanization's contribution to temperature rise has been estimated at just around five percent.
Key factors driving the urban heat island effect include surface reflectivity, impervious surfaces, green space availability, building height and artificial heat emissions.
Choi compared Seoul and Yangpyeong -- a less urbanized town east of Gyeonggi Province – between 1981 and 2020, and found that Seoul's annual heat wave days increased by 2.1 days while Yangpyeong saw only a 0.4-day increase. Similarly, Seoul's tropical nights rose by 3.8 days, compared to 1.8 days in Yangpyeong.
Meteorologist Kim noted that many Seoul residents experience even higher temperatures than those officially recorded.
'Seoul's temperature readings come from an observatory on a high hill in Jongno-gu, where the urban heat island effect is less pronounced,' he said. 'In residential and commercial areas, where roads and buildings absorb more heat, actual temperatures are often significantly higher than the official data suggests.'
Both Choi and Kim predicted that Seoul's temperature will rise more rapidly as the entire nation gets warmer.
According to Choi's climate projections, subtropical climate zones in Korea are expected to emerge in parts of the southern regions, coastal areas and major cities such as Seoul, Busan, Daegu and Gwangju in 2021-2030 and will expand toward the later part under a low-emission scenario (SSP1-2.6).
Under a high-emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), subtropical conditions are expected to spread rapidly. They will cover nearly all of Korea between 2081 and 2011, except for high-altitude areas in Gangwon Province and other mountainous regions.
If emissions remain high, Seoul could see up to 109 annual heat wave days by the end of the century, a sharp rise from 33 days in 2023.
Korea's temperature to rise in every scenario
Kim said Korea is 'already' displaying subtropical characteristics, pointing to the unusually long summer last year, which extended into November.
Climate classification systems vary, but the Trewartha climate classification, widely used in recent years, defines a subtropical climate as one where the monthly average temperature exceeds 10 degrees Celsius for more than eight months of the year. In Korea, average temperatures surpass this threshold from April to October, making November the deciding factor. In 2024, November's average temperature was 9.7 degrees -- just below the threshold.
According to the '2020 Korean Peninsula Climate Change Outlook Report' by the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, further warming is expected under all future scenarios.
Between 2021 and 2040, Korea's average temperature is projected to rise by 1.6 degrees Celsius under a low-emission scenario and by 1.8 degrees Celsius under a high-emission scenario. From 2041 to 2060, the projected increases are 1.8 degrees under the low-emission scenario and 3.3 degrees under the high-emission scenario.
As rising temperatures become inevitable, experts stress the importance of adaptation and mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of extreme heat.
'Understanding urban climate changes caused by global warming is crucial,' Choi said. 'We need consistent, objective methods to assess maximum urban heat island intensity and develop effective countermeasures.'
With summers becoming longer and hotter, cities must prioritize sustainable urban planning, increase green spaces and implement heat mitigation strategies to protect vulnerable populations in the years ahead.

Autumn is near but Korea still in sweltering heat
Though Saturday marks "cheoseo" — South Korea's seasonal marker that traditionally signals the end of summer — extremely hot temperatures, accompanied by heat wave watches and tropical nights, are expected to continue into next week. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heat wave watches were in effect in most parts of the country, excluding mountainous regions, as of 11 a.m., Thursday, as nationwide apparent temperatures reached as high as 35 degrees Celsius. Heat wave watches and warnings in Korea are issued when the maximum apparent temperature is expected to remain above 33 C and 35 C, respectively, for two or more consecutive days. The KMA added that the recent heat stems from the Tibetan high-pressure system expanding above the Korean Peninsula, while hot, humid air continues to flow into the country along the edges of the North Pacific high-pressure system. During Thursday's press briefing, the KMA added that the heat will further intensify over the weekend. The two high-pressure systems will continue to overlap above the peninsula, pushing temperatures up by an additional 1 C to 2 C. On both Saturday and Sunday, low temperatures are expected to range between 22 C to 28 C and 22 C to 27 C, respectively, while high temperatures during the day are expected to range between 31 C to 36 C on both days. From early next week, cool air is expected to flow into the Korean Peninsula from the north, colliding with the hot, humid air and eventually forming a low-pressure system. The KMA added that rainfall is expected to fall in the central region on Aug. 26 as the system moves north. After the low-pressure system moves out, the KMA expects the high-pressure systems to regain their grip over the country. 'While numerical forecast models diverge slightly on the exact location of the North Pacific high-pressure system's edge, most suggest it will extend over to North Korea or at least in the northern parts above the Greater Seoul region, which is normally a sign that the heat will linger for some time,' said KMA meteorologist Gong Sang-min. Greater Seoul includes the capital, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province. In its monthly outlook released Wednesday, the KMA added that September temperatures are also expected to remain above seasonal norms. For the first, third, and fourth week of September, there is a 50 percent chance of higher-than-average temperatures, with only a 10 percent likelihood of cooler-than-normal conditions. In the second week, the probability of seeing above-normal temperatures rises to 60 percent. 'Though this does not necessarily mean that heat waves will continue deep into autumn, such indicators show that breaking away from 'warmer-than-usual' temperatures may be difficult,' KMA official Woo Jin-kyu told The Korea Herald.

Napa cabbage price jumps 50% in a month due to abnormal weather
The retail price of napa cabbage, a key ingredient for kimchi, is skyrocketing in South Korea, rising 52 percent from a month earlier, likely due to supply disruptions caused by this summer's unusual weather, which has alternated between torrential rain and extreme heat waves. Kimchi cabbage cost 7,062 won per head as of Monday, according to data from the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation on Tuesday. This marks a sharp increase from 4,642 won in mid-July and from 6,871 won just last Wednesday. Napa cabbage usually costs more in August than in July, but this month's price was 9.3 percent higher than the same time last year. Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs told local media that this appears to be due to the combination of heavy rain and heat waves that struck the country in July and early August. Officials added that the government has been releasing its cabbage reserves to help stabilize prices, and they expect prices to trend downward in the coming weeks. The wholesale price of napa cabbage has recently been on a downward trend, marking 4,393 won per head as of last Thursday. Spain deploys 500 more troops to battle wildfires during extended heat wave
Spain was deploying a further 500 soldiers to battle wildfires that have torn through parched woodland during a prolonged spell of scorching weather, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Sunday. The decision to add to the more than 1,400 troops already on wildfire duty came as authorities struggled to contain forest blazes, especially in the northwestern Galicia region, and awaited the arrival of promised aircraft reinforcements from other European countries. Firefighters are tackling 12 major wildfires in Galicia, all of them near the city of Ourense, the head of the Galician regional government Alfonso Rueda told a press conference with Sanchez. 'Homes are still under threat so we have lockdowns in place and are carrying out evacuations,' Rueda said. Galicia has been battling the spreading flames for more than a week. Temperatures in Spain could reach 45 degrees Celsius in some areas Sunday, the Spanish national weather agency AEMET said. On Saturday, the maximum temperature was 44.7 C in the southern city of Cordoba, it said. 'This Sunday, when extraordinarily high temperatures are expected, the danger of wildfires is extreme in most of the country,' AEMET said on the social platform X. The fires in Spain this year have burned 158,000 hectares, according to the European Union's European Forest Fire Information System. That is an area roughly as big as metropolitan London. The scorched area of forest in Portugal so far this year is 17 times higher than in 2024, at around 139,000 hectares, according to preliminary calculations by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, a government body. Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Albania have also requested help from the EU's firefighting force in recent days to deal with forest fires. The force has already been activated as many times this year as in all of last year's summer fire season. In Turkey, where recent wildfires have killed 19 people, parts of the historic region that includes memorials to World War I's Gallipoli campaign were evacuated Sunday as blazes threatened homes in the country's northwest. Six villages were evacuated as a precautionary measure, the governor of Canakkale province, Omer Toraman, said. Some 1,300 firefighting personnel backed by 30 aircraft were battling the blaze, according to the General Directorate of Forestry. A wildfire on the peninsula to the north of the Dardanelles Strait led to the closure of visitor facilities at Gallipoli, the site's management said. The area is dotted with cemeteries, memorials and other remnants of battles waged between Ottoman and Allied troops in 1915.
