Chelsea Flower Show loses its bloom! Royal event is overrun by influencers and reality stars - so, who was a rose among thorns in the fashion stakes?

Daily Mail20-05-2025

The Chelsea Flower Show has long been one of the highlights of the annual royal calendar since the first event was held in 1912.
Organised by the Royal Horticultural Society in London 's chicest borough, the garden show has historically been attended by senior royals - with everyone from the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles, to the Prince and Princess of Wales stopping by to smell the roses.
As it returned to the manicured lawns of the Royal Hospital of Chelsea for its 113th edition, however, reality TV stars and social media influencers far outnumbered the royals - with Charles, 76, and Camilla, 77, among the family's only representatives.
Experts noted that while these celebrities can sometimes up the glamour quotient, not all of them are familiar with the correct protocol, Britain's self-styled Queen of Etiquette Laura Windsor told MailOnline.
'Celebrities taking the spotlight, as well as influencers getting in the way with their Iphones can just get too much for those who are more interested in admiring the scene, leading to comments such as "Oh, not another celeb" or "I wish this person would stop taking 100 photos of the same flower!"
'Discretion, nowadays, is what people want,' she continued, adding the focus should be solely on the display gardens.
Further, while Queen Camilla 's leaf print dress fit the fashion brief perfectly, other attendees appear to have misunderstood the memo as all-black ensembles, ill-fitting suits, and garish prints were spotted throughout day one.
Whether it was Lady Amelia Windsor 's dark co-ord set or Gemma Collins 's long-sleeved cobalt maxi dress, a majority of the celebrity looks missed the mark this year.
While there 's no official dress code at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, attendees are advised to wear sturdy shoes, carry a light, waterproof jacket as well as sunglasses while showing off the best of their spring-summer wardrobes.
Fail-safe options include midi dresses, floaty floral frocks, well-tailored suits in pastel hues such as lilac and sage green, and linen trousers. Guests are advised against wearing jeans, flip-flops, stilletos, and strappy sandals, with 'smart casual' outfits typically being the order of the day.
While the Chelsea Flower Show is not as formal as Royal Ascot, which kicks off next month, untucked shirts, cropped tops, and elaborate headgear could reasonably considered a sartorial faux pas at London's buzziest garden show.
AJ Pritchard & Zara Zoffany
While AJ Pritchard and Zara Zoffany were the eptiome of relationship goals, their fashion choices for this year's Chelsea Flower Show left much to be desired.
Zara, who said 'yes' to the former Strictly Come Dancing Star's marriage proposal in March, wore a midriff-baring crop top with a pair of low-rise jeans that may have been a tad too casual for the event.
She accessorised with multiple necklaces, a fitness tracker with a bright orange strap, and this season's hottest plush toy - the Labubu doll - attached to her shoulder bag.
Ferne McCann
Former TOWIE star Ferne McCann picked a lemon yellow midi dress that boasted a plunging neckline and might have been more fitting for a day out at the races than the prized garden show.
Her leaf-strapped high heels were almost too literal - and might have made walking through the gardens an uphill task.
Gemma Collins
Reality TV star Gemma Collins showed off her slimmed-down figure in a sheer gown with caped sleeves that swept the floor.
The reality starlet, 44, who has gone from a size 26 to a size 20 in just three months after using the weight loss jab Mounjaro, added a pair of bejewelled cat eye sunglasses that added little to her look.
Tasha Ghouri
Tasha Ghouri's maximalist outfit was a little too much for the Chelsea Flower Show, as the British model and dancer wore a corseted mini dress with a ruffled cape, heels from Steve Madden, and an oversized flower crown for this year's edition.
In a post on her Instagram page, Tasha - who was born deaf - revealed the headpiece was fashioned from alliums and dandelions 'to highlight the parallels between the abilities of both plants and young people to overcome adversity'.
Nadiya Bychkova
Strictly Come Dancing star Nadiya Bychkova's Louboutin stilletos were a tad too high for a garden show, as the Ukrainian ballroom dancer joined the group of British tv stars in attendance at the Chelsea Flower Show on Monday.
Her thigh-skimming evening dress flattered her figure, but the short, powder-blue number felt more appropriate for a night-out than a sun-soaked morning inspecting prize-winning blooms.
Myleene Klass
Hear'Say star Myleene Klass picked a daring dress, with a thigh-high slit, for her appearance at the flower show this year,
While the floral print of the ruffled number was on theme, the fit isn't particularly flattering on Mylene and is a boring fashion choice for the otherwise typically-glam for the Loose Women presenter.
Nancy Sorrell
Love Actually star Nancy Sorrell picked a pink, rose-printed maxi dress that clashed with her white boots - as her confused ensemble failed to impress.
Her choice of accessories was equally baffling, as Nancy picked a pair of beaded bracelets and orange sunglasses - neither of which complemented her look.
Clara Amfo
Clara Amfo's corporate-inspired outfit felt like she was rushing off for a meeting right after the flower show, as the BBC 1 radio star wore striped navy trousers with a white bodysuit and a beige, cropped trench jacket.
However, the accessories she added - including the white bag - made the look feel off-balance in the absence of one striking element that could tie everything together.
Lady Amelia Windsor
While Lady Amelia Windsor rarely finds herself on 'Worst Dressed' lists, the black co-ord set - comprising a cropped top and maxi skirt - she picked for the flower show isn't her finest hour.
Coupled with her brown leather loafers, the 29-year-old's outfit felt uninspired - especially considering the granddaughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, was representing the sparse royal brigade.
Jason Statham
Hollywood action star Jason Statham rounded out the list of 'worst dressed celebrities' on the first day of the 2025 Chelsea Flower Show, as he also picked a drab all-black look for the event.
The 57-year-old wore cargo pants with a full-sleeved sweater and a matching cap as he put on a very animated display while examining the exhibits.
Amanda Holden
Amanda Holden cut a stylish figure as she attended the Chelsea Flower Show in a striking, chevron print pink and white Suzannah London co-ord that was a welcome departure from florals.
The TV presenter, 54, was all smiles for the inaugural event in the classic patterned number, which featured a long ruffled skirt.
It featured an open oyster design at the bottom, adding to the overall timeless style of the outfit. She accessorised the dress with a pair of large sunglasses, silver jewellery and a small handbag.
Jade Holland Cooper
Jade Holland Cooper, who is the Princess of Wales' favourite designer, appeared to take style cues from Catherine as she wore a navy blue, polka-dotted dress that was the epitome of quiet luxury.
The British fashion designer dove into her own closet and flaunted the Annabel pleated maxi dress from her latest collection for the flower show - with Jade adding a pair of matching blue wedges, simple gold earrings, and a gold wrist watch.
Natalie Rushdie
Scottish jazz singer Natalie Rushdie picked a stunning floral dress and jacket from Alice + Olivia that far outranked any of the other botanical-inspired outfits from day one of the show.
The breezy linen bustier dress featured the brand's 'Dusk to Dawn' print that paid homage to Claude Monet's 'Femmes au Jardin' oil painting in perhaps the most thoughtful interpretation of the theme.
The 38-year-old picked one of couture milliner Sarah Cant's bespoke hats to top off her look.
Dame Mary Berry
Dame Mary Berry was a vision in her soft pink, sheer dress that was cinched at the waist with a matching belt, as the 90-year-old garden show veteran gave some of the younger attendees a style lesson.
She finished her look with a pair of beige, suede slingback flats and a matching Michael Kors clutch bag that perfectly complemented the midi dress from Miss Rosier.

Sleep Token: So, there are no hard-rock headliners any more? Nobody told this lot

The rise of Sleep Token has been one of the biggest and most curious success stories of modern rock. The brainchild of masked, anonymous frontman Vessel, with a band of equally enigmatic, numbered musicians, the British collective have turned the art of tease and mystery into a genuine phenomenon that, apparently, has yet to find a roof. They don't give interviews, and what few vague insights they did offer the press in the earliest days comes to about 1,000 words in total. What they do communicate to fans is usually in symbols, or cryptic clues in artwork and lyrics. For 2021's This Place Will Become Your Tomb album, the numbers referenced turned out to be coordinates to places such as the Mariana Trench and Point Nemo, the most remote place on Earth. For all this apparent attempt to shun human contact, they've been greatly rewarded. Their fans are legion, poring endlessly over the band's lore and lyrics, selling out two nights – 'rituals', in Sleep Token parlance – at the O2 in December almost instantly. Last month's fourth album, Even in Arcadia, a genre-crossing mix of heavy, downtuned metal, R'n'B, dreamy pop and vibey electronic washes – went straight to number one in the UK and America, setting records for most vinyl sales for hard rock in the modern era, as well as netting the highest weekly streams. Drummer II will even perform at Black Sabbath's final show in July. On Saturday night, they hit yet another high water mark, headlining the iconic Download Festival at Britain's spiritual home of rock, Donington Park. Where Friday's headliners Green Day gave a masterclass in gigantic stadium rock, Sleep Token deal in something to rival the theatrical bombast and enormous production values of Beyoncé or Lady Gaga. If rock doesn't produce headliners any more, nobody told this lot. Their staging – revealed by a curtain drop that looked perilously close to going wrong – took the form of a massive, multi-level, structure tying in with Even in Arcadia's gardeny artwork, featuring cliffs, ornate archways, a massive doorway, and the band's logo sigil in a dazzling array of lights. Petals rained down non-stop from the roof during the heavy opener Look to Windward, while during Emergence, an actual waterfall began to cascade down the craggy backdrop, fuelled by apparently 60 tonnes of liquid contained in the stage roof. Then there's Vessel himself, cutting a sort of kabuki figure, pacing slowly across the stage in an ornate, armoured robe, with his shredded chest and arms blacked out. He's a curious fellow, leaving most of the grandstanding to his more extrovert bandmates. But this just makes him all the more compelling, even if the recent Top 10 single Caramel finds him declaring, 'This stage is a prison, a beautiful nightmare'. As with the music, his vocals aren't always standard rock fare. Often, he sounds like an otherworldly version of Sam Smith, laced with emotion and frailty when he isn't screaming to the heaviest bits. That they can pull of a show of such magnitude is impressive enough. That they can manage it with their mystique only growing in allure speaks to a band completely assured in what they do. As statements go, it's about the only thing Sleep Token have ever not been coy or ambiguous about. No further dates

Moment 'feral' Brit tries to provoke another passenger on chaotic flight to Ibiza

A 'feral' Brit has been captured attempting to provoke another passenger on a chaotic 'flight from hell' to Ibiza. The altercation reportedly occurred on Jet2 flight LS1181 from Birmingham on Friday after the pilot delayed takeoff by around two-and-a-half hours. Originally scheduled to depart at 6.15pm, holidaymakers were not allowed on board until around 7pm only to be told that there would be further delays. One passenger who witnessed the incident unfold says it was at this point that the flight began to go 'feral'. CJ Edwards posted on TikTok to explain that the passenger, who can be seen in footage wearing a green outfit, decided to drink a bottle of vodka in '10 seconds', resulting in him later screaming in the faces of flight attendants. He was also seen throwing items of clothing at another passenger in the video, which raised tensions before others on board stepped in. Mr Edwards said: 'People were drinking and doing all sorts, and what I want to say is that it wasn't just him. 'There were a lot of things going on. There was a fight on the plane, someone got slapped, someone was sick in the aisles. My friend had sick on his shoe. People were passing drinks over each other. CJ Edwards posted on TikTok to explain that the passenger, who can be seen in footage wearing a green outfit, decided to drink a bottle of vodka in 'ten seconds', resulting in him later screaming in the faces of flight attendants 'There was a lot going on. So when we got on the flight and told we can't move, the guy took his bottle of Ciroc out that he'd got from duty free and, I'm not lying, he's guzzled it down in about 10 seconds.' Mr Edwards said it was at that point he knew he didn't want to be 'anywhere near' the man and moved to the back of the plane to sit with a friend. Despite the pre-flight chaos, Mr Edwards said the plane eventually took off - which flight records say was at 8.44pm - but that that there was a strong amount of turbulence. 'And when it's doing all of this in the air the man is standing up,' he continued. 'He's doing the most. He was coming to the back of the plane where I was, trying to get some drink off people and talk to some guys. 'When the air hostess told him to sit down he's looked in her face and said 'But who are you? Who are you to tell me to sit down?'. 'After all that when we're trying to land he's standing up again. He's in the aisles, moving through. People are trying to get him to sit down and he's not doing it. 'The pilot is on the microphone saying 'to the guy standing up, please sit down'. 'I think the person he was with as well that he ended up slapping them but I'm not too sure. It was the flight from hell.' When returning home after spending 24 hours in Ibiza, Mr Edwards said he saw the man who apologised and blamed his behaviour on frustration at the flight being delayed. He added: 'When I was getting my flight back today I saw him and he was like 'bro I'm so sorry, I was frustrated because I was trying to do 24 hours and my time was delayed'. 'I was just thinking 'your time was delayed like everyone else's, big man'.'

King Charles and Prince Louis's special bond: How cheeky seven-year-old channelled his doting grandfather on the Trooping the Colour balcony

The sweet bond between King Charles and his grandson Prince Louis was once again on show on Saturday as the royals took to the balcony to watch the flyover during Trooping the Colour. While the monarch, 76, is a grandfather of five, it's believed he has a particularly special bond with the Prince and Princess of Wales 's youngest son. And the youngster seemed keen to emulate his grandfather during yesterday's festivities, with video footage from the event showing Louis appearing to copy the way the senior royal was waving while watching the flypast. Lip reader Juliet Sullivan told FEMAIL that His Majesty had a sweet interchange with Louis at one point on the balcony, ensuring he didn't miss out on the action by telling him: 'Louis! Look! The fighter jets!' Meanwhile, adorable video clips and photos show the seven-year-old waving at the crowd in tandem with his beloved Grandpa Wales. The sweet bond between the two royals has long been celebrated by royal watchers. On April 23, 2020 - during lockdown - Clarence House posted a touching picture of Charles hugging his grandson to mark his second birthday. And it appears that King Charles shares one of his special passions with young Louis - it was recently revealed that the soon-to-be-seven-year-old shares his grandpa's love of art. In February, the Princess of Wales shared portraits created by her three children as part of her early years work encouraging parents to draw with their children. And while fans quickly noticed the sheer artistic talent of George who created a line-drawn portrait of his mother sitting in an armchair, it was Louis's attention to detail that wowed. His drawing, which appeared to be drawn in red crayon, featured a beauty spot above his mother's lip on the left side. For more than 50 years, King Charles has used any spare moment he has to create watercolour paintings – some of which have been displayed in exhibitions in London and Australia. He has frequently been seen whipping out his paintbrushes while in Klosters, Switzerland during his family skiing holidays. Previously the chairman of the Royal Collection Trust, Charles has seemingly passed this passion on to young Louis. But the pair are connected not only by their shared interests but their names. Born in 1948, Charles was christened Charles Philip Arthur George. Born 70 years later in 2018, Prince Louis's full name is Louis Arthur Charles. Aside from the obvious use of Charles as a middle name, the name Louis is thought to be a tribute to the King's beloved uncle, Louis Mountbatten, who was assassinated by the IRA in 1979. Although it is normal for senior royals to name their children after other members of the family, it seems Charles is a particularly deserving grandfather. When Prince George was born in 2013, Charles spoke of how 'overjoyed' he was to have become a grandfather. He explained: 'Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time.' In a touching tribute to his first grandson, Charles planted trees at Balmoral and called it Prince George's Wood. During a 2018 interview for Prince, Son & Heir – Charles at 70, Queen Camilla said of her husband: 'He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know making funny noises and laughing and my grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him.' She continued: 'He reads Harry Potter, and he can do all the different voices, and I think children really appreciate that.' In agreement, William described Charles as a 'brilliant grandfather' – although he wished he could spend more time with the grandchildren. Catherine shared a portrait created by Prince Louis as part of her early years work encouraging parents to draw with their children. Fans were wowed by the young prince's attention to detail in including his mother's beauty spot - suggesting he shares an interest in art with Charles 'It's something I'm working more heavily on, put it that way,' William said. 'I think he does have time for it, but I would like him to have more time with the children. 'I think he's… now he's reached his 70th year it's a perfect time to consolidate a little bit because as most families would do, you are worried about having them around and making sure their health's okay. And he's the fittest man I know but equally I want him to be fit until he's 95. 'So, having more time with him at home would be lovely, and being able to you know, play with the grandchildren. 'Because when he's there, he's brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible.' In 2022, the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, provided a sweet example of Louis and Charles enjoying each other's company. While watching the Pageant, the young prince showcased an array of amusing expressions as he sat next to his mother Catherine, then-Duchess of Cambridge, in the Royal Box. He was seen clenching his fists, sticking out his tongue, waving his arms in the air, putting his hands over his mother's mouth and standing on his seat for a better view of the spectacle. The restless four-year-old soon became bored with the seating arrangement and asked his father Prince William for 'Pa' indicating he wanted to see his grandfather. When the youngster grew restless during the 2022 celebrations, he sat on his grandfather's knee The restless then-four-year-old appeared to be enjoying himself as he sat beside his grandparents Speaking to MailOnline, expert lipreader Juliet Sullivan revealed William leaned across Camilla to ask Charles: 'Grandpa, can Louis sit on your knee?' to which he replied 'of course'. Catherine stroked Louis's shoulder before he got out of his seat and walked to his left towards his grandfather. The four-year-old prince then sat on Charles's lap who rocked him from side to side, making for some adorable family photos. One royal fan tweeted: 'Prince Charles and Prince Louis have the best bond.' 'Lovely to see Prince Charles in grandpa mode with Prince Louis today!,' wrote another.
