18 migrants die in shipwreck off eastern Libya, 50 missing

Indian Express2 days ago
At least 18 migrants died in a shipwreck off the city of Tobruk in eastern Libya over the weekend, and 50 are still missing, the
International Organization for Migration said on Tuesday, citing reports.
Ten survivors have been accounted for so far, the IOM said.
Tobruk is a coastal city near the border with Egypt.
A diplomatic source from the Egyptian consulate in Benghazi in eastern Libya told Reuters by phone that the migrants are from Egypt.
The diplomat said 10 bodies were identified and transferred back home, while the survivors were being held in an anti-illegal migration facility.
A Libyan Coast Guard official said the bodies of migrants were found in Alaghila Beach, some 25 kilometers east of Tobruk.
Since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011, Libya has become a transit country for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty across the desert and over the Mediterranean to Europe.
'This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the deadly risks people are forced to take in search of safety and opportunity. Libya remains a major transit point for migrants and refugees, many of whom face exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening journeys,' the IOM said.

100 days since Pahalgam: 12 dreaded terrorists killed as hunt intensifies

Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley on April 22, 2025, which left 26 civilians dead, Indian security forces have ramped up their counter-terror offensive across Jammu and Kashmir. In the roughly 100 days since the attack, a total of 12 hardcore terrorists have been eliminated in a series of focused, intelligence-driven missions, sources told India perpetrators of the Pahalgam massacre were linked to The Resistance Front (TRF), a Pakistan-backed terrorist group. Security agencies launched coordinated efforts across multiple agencies to neutralise the threat posed by such outfits operating within the Union those killed, six were identified as Pakistani terrorists, while the remaining six were locally recruited terrorists who were involved in recent terror strikes. Sources privy to the operations said, "It is very difficult to put an exact number to these missions, as units across Jammu and Kashmir continue to conduct operations regularly in their respective zones".One of the most impactful missions came on July 28 in the form of Operation Mahadev, where three terrorists—directly linked to the Pahalgam attack—were gunned down near Srinagar's Dachigam area. One of them was identified as the mastermind behind the Baisaran killings. Just a day later, Operation ShivShakti was launched in the Poonch sector, resulting in the elimination of two more to security sources, the crackdown began within a week of the Pahalgam incident. Four major operations were carried out in south Kashmir, particularly in Shopian and Pulwama. These early actions signalled a shift to a more aggressive approach in tackling cross-border witnessed two crucial operations - in Shopian's Keller Forest, three Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives were killed, followed by another mission on May 15 in Tral's Nader area, which also claimed the lives of three more efforts to wipe out terror elements were not limited to Indian territory. In a powerful response beyond the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Armed Forces carried out Operation Sindoor on May 6 and the operation, nine terror launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were completely destroyed. More than 100 terrorists were killed in the precision air and ground strikes. Most of these launch pads were being used as staging grounds for infiltration and attacks in the Pahalgam attack, intelligence reports had flagged 42 active terrorist launch pads across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, with an estimated 110–130 terrorists stationed there. Around 70–75 terrorists were believed to be active in the Kashmir valley, while 60–65 were operating in regions of Jammu, Rajouri, and the 100-day period post the Baisaran attack, six Pakistani terrorists from this pool have been confirmed killed in action, reducing their active threat considerably."Operations like Mahadev and Shiv Shakti have not only eliminated high-value targets but also sent a clear message about India's zero-tolerance approach to cross-border terrorism," an official told India Today on the condition of forces continue to maintain high alert in vulnerable districts, particularly in southern Kashmir and border zones near Rajouri and Poonch. Joint teams of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and intelligence units remain engaged in sweeping combing persistent efforts on both sides of the LoC, Indian forces are determined to dismantle terror infrastructure and prevent future attacks, sources combination of swift ground action in Kashmir and strategic strikes like Operation Sindoor across the border marks a significant escalation in India's counter-terror strategy post the Pahalgam carnage.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Jammu and Kashmir

A passenger on an Air India Express flight who was meant to get off at Delhi airport accidentally stayed on the same aircraft and flew to Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. A passenger on an Air India Express flight from Srinagar missed his Delhi stop and flew to Bhubaneswar instead. The airline is investigating the security lapse.(Reuters) The airline has launched an investigation to address any lapses, according to a PTI news agency report. An Air India Express spokesperson cited in the report said, 'On July 30, a guest transiting through Delhi on another flight inadvertently continued on the aircraft onward to Bhubaneswar. An internal investigation is being conducted to identify and address any lapses, while reiterating SOPs and internal briefings across stations to prevent recurrence.' Normally, airline staff check passengers' boarding passes and baggage during transit as part of standard procedures. While specific details about the passenger and the aircraft could not be immediately ascertained, a source cited in the PTI report said the man flew from Srinagar to Delhi but didn't get off, as he was supposed to. The plane then continued to Bhubaneswar using the same aircraft. The crew only realised what had happened after the man informed them. The above-mentioned sources added, 'The crew then informed the pilots, who in turn informed the airline. When this aircraft landed, AI Express teams were there who put him on the return flight the same aircraft was to operate to Delhi. Russia pounds Kyiv again, Zelenskyy says Moscow fired 300 drones, 8 missiles; boy among 6 dead

In defiance of US President Donald Trump's ultimatum, Russia has continued to launch overnight aerial attacks on Ukraine with hundreds of missiles and drones, killing at least six people in Kyiv last night, including a six-year-old boy and his mother. read more An explosion of a drone lights up the sky over the city during a Russian drone strike, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine July 30, 2025. (Photo: Gleb Garanich/Reuters) Russia launched missile and drone attacks on Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday, killing at least six people including a six-year-old boy and his mother, and wounding at least 82 others, Ukrainian officials said. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia launched more than 300 drones and eight missiles and hit residential buildings in the capital. 'Today the world has once again seen Russia's response to our desire for peace with America and Europe. Therefore, peace without strength is impossible,' Zelenskiy said on the Telegram app. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said nine children were wounded, the largest number hurt in a single night in the city since Russia started its full-scale invasion almost three and a half years ago. Yurii Kravchuk, 62, stood wrapped in a blanket next to a damaged building, with a bandage around his head. He heard the missile alert but did not get to a shelter in time, he told Reuters. 'I started waking up my wife and then there was an explosion … My daughter ended up in the hospital.' Emergency crews were putting out fires and cutting through concrete blocks in search for survivors across the city. Explosions rocked Kyiv for hours and blazes lit up the night sky. Schools and hospitals were among the buildings that took hits across 27 locations in the city, officials said. The air force reported five direct missile hits and 21 drone hits in 12 locations. Russia, which denies targeting civilians, has stepped up air strikes on Ukrainian towns and cities far from the front line of the war in recent months. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States would start imposing tariffs and other measures on Russia '10 days from today' if Moscow showed no progress toward ending the conflict. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'This is Putin's response to Trump's deadlines,' Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said. 'The world must respond with a tribunal and maximum pressure.' Zelenskiy posted a video of burning ruins, saying people were still trapped under the rubble of one partially-ruined residential building. Ukrainian air defence units downed 288 attack drones and three cruise missiles, the air force said. (This is an agency copy.
