Former Milan captain Baresi undergoes lung surgery, says recovery underway
The honorary vice president and former captain for Milan underwent a routine medical check which revealed the issue and will undergo oncological recovery therapy with immunotherapy.
"Dear fans, I just want to let you know that it will take me a little time to get back to full strength," Baresi said in a statement.
The 65-year-old Baresi is regarded as an icon at San Siro, having spent his entire 20-year career with the club and captaining the team for 15 seasons before retiring in 1997.
He was part of the Italy squad that won the 1982 World Cup and captained the team to the 1994 final, which ended in a narrow penalty shootout loss to Brazil.

Man United reject approaches for Harry Maguire from FIVE clubs in the Premier League (and Italy!) amid uncertainty over England star's Old Trafford future with contract set to expire next summer
Manchester United have rebuffed approaches from clubs in the Premier League and Italy for Harry Maguire, Mail Sport understands. A number of interested parties at home and abroad have been told the likelihood is that the England defender is likely to extend his contract – and spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford. Whether that happens remains to be seen however, three top flight sides and two from Italy explored a move for Maguire this summer and were turned away. The 32-year-old sees his current, £190,000-a-week deal expire at the end of the forthcoming season. While his camp declined to comment, it is thought that he is keen to stay at United, whom he joined from Leicester City for £80m in 2019, a then world record fee for a defender. Maguire's desire is to emulate the likes of Denis Irwin, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce and Bryan Robson, who are all fondly regarded as key United mainstays by the club's support. No talks have yet taken place over extending Maguire's contract, but the message to interested parties is believed to have been that United are keen to keep him. Regardless, the man with 64 England caps is unlikely to be short of options. He is known to be aware of stunning season former team-mate Scott McTominay has enjoyed following his switch to Napoli, which saw him named Serie A's most valuable player as he scored 12 goals to help his side win the league. In Maguire's case, former United bosses Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who brought him to Old Trafford, could offer escapes to Turkey via Fenerbahce and Besiktas, while Galatasaray are known to be admirers. French duo Monaco and Marseille are monitoring the situation for a player who could move for free at the end of the season. Clubs from outside England can approach players to negotiate pre-contract agreements as much as six months before the end of their contracts. That means that, should United and Maguire fail to reach an agreement, his exit could be sealed as early as January. A new deal would cap a remarkable turnaround for the Sheffield-born centre-half. He lost the captaincy under Erik ten Hag and came close to joining West Ham United in 2023. However, Maguire has enjoyed something of a renaissance under Ruben Amorim and became a key figure for United following the Portuguese's arrival. Indeed, at times he was often thrown up front thanks to his aerial ability, with United short on attacking options, and delivered the dramatic late winner in April's staggering 5-4 Europa League quarter-final win against Lyon. In January, United triggered a one-year extension to his deal, with Maguire also named as captain in Bruno Fernandes' absence.

Jorge Costa, Champions League-winning Porto captain, dies aged 53
The former Porto captain Jorge Costa has died at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training centre. The former defender, who was serving as Porto's director of professional football in his second season in the role, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. 'Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest,' the club said in a statement. 'He left his mark on generations of fans and became a symbol of Portismo.' Over his career, Costa played 530 games in all competitions – 383 for Porto and 50 for Portugal's national team. Costa earned the nickname Animal from teammate Fernando Couto during their partnership in central defence. As captain, he led Porto to Uefa Cup glory in 2003 and a Champions League triumph in 2004 under manager José Mourinho. The defender was one of six players to win five consecutive Portuguese league championships with Porto, alongside Aloísio, Ljubinko Drulović, Paulinho Santos, Rui Barros and Folha. Costa returned to the club in April 2024 as director under new president André Villas-Boas. 'Jorge Costa's legacy will always remain alive in the memory of all Porto fans. You will never be forgotten, Captain,' the club added. Charlton Athletic, the London club where Costa spent half the 2001-02 season on loan to play Premier League football, making 24 appearances, released a short social media statement, saying: 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Jorge Costa at the age of 53. The thoughts of everyone at Charlton Athletic are with Jorge's family and friends at this difficult time.'
