Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool in for Barcola EXCLUSIVE, Chelsea urged to sign Guehi, Prem clubs queue for Sancho
'Blackmail and insults won't work'
Sporting's president has furiously hit back at Manchester United target Victor Gyokeres saying: 'Threats and blackmail don't work,' writes MARTIN BLACKBURN.
The Sweden striker is considering going on strike to force through a dream move to United or Arsenal.
Gyokeres, 27, is furious with Sporting for going back on their word over a transfer promise to him and plans not to play for the club again.
He believes he had a gentleman's agreement to leave the Portuguese giants for £50million with a further £8million in add-ons but that claim has been rubbished by president Frederico Varandas.
And the Sporting chief insists he will not be bullied into letting the ex-Coventry forward move to the Prem on the cheap this summer.
Varandas said: 'Sporting will not accept blackmail and insults – you should know me better by now.
'One thing is certain, we will not accept £50m plus £8m. As of now, Sporting has not received any bids for Gyokeres.
'He is a fantastic professional, to this day he has had zero offers. He has a three-year contract with Sporting.'

Arsenal suffer fresh Nico Williams transfer blow as Viktor Gyokeres meeting set
Nico Williams and Viktor Gyokeres are two of Arsenal's top targets for the summer transfer window, though their moves for the duo are dragging on in a frustrating manner Arsenal's busy summer transfer window has hit somewhat of a stumbling blow. The Gunners had been hoping to move quickly in a bid to give Mikel Arteta the perfect springboard to finally secure the Premier League title. It has been 21 years since the London side last won the English top-flight and they have finished as runners-up three years in succession. At the top of their list is bolstering their attacking options. Viktor Gyokeres is one name on their shopping list, though Sporting Lisbon are proving less than keen to sell. Relations between Gyokeres and the Portuguese champions have broken down. His agent is set to fly out to London for talks with Arsenal chiefs, as they prepare a move for him. It is not all positive news though, with another top target in Nico Williams looking increasingly unlikely to be at the Emirates next season. His club, Athletic Bilbao, are desperate to keep hold of the Euro 2024 winner and are now looking at handing him a new contract. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Arsenal transfer news. Bilbao make Williams move Athletic Bilbao are looking to hand Nico Williams a new contract, in a blow to Arsenal's hopes of signing him. The Gunners had made the winger one of their top targets for this summer's window. While he has a £50m buyout clause in his contract, AS now claim that Bilbao are seeking to hand him a new deal. It is said that the La Liga side have been negotiating with Williams' representatives 'for weeks'. His current contract expires in the summer of 2027, with Bilbao hoping a bumper new deal may mean they can keep hold of him. The club are also looking to raise the buyout clause, though that is being resisted by the player's camp. Gunners sent warning Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche has insisted the German side don't need to sell Hugo Ekitike amid interest from Arsenal. Ekitike scored 22 goals and notched 12 assists Frankfurt this season. The 22-year-old only joined Frankfurt from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, and still has four years left on his contract. Frankfurt value him at around £85m, with Krosche insisting they will not consider offers below that. He told Wiesbadener Kurier: 'If the price isn't right, then he'll simply stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo.' Gyokeres meeting set Viktor Gyokeres' agent is set to fly out for talks with Arsenal as his relations with Sporting Lisbon continue to take a downturn. Gyokeres is one of the Gunners' top targets, though a deal is proving harder to negotiate than expected. That has cause fury from the Swedish star, who is pushing to leave the Portuguese capital. Now, CNN Portugal report that the star's agent has flown out for talks with Arsenal chiefs, with those discussions now becoming 'more formal'. The aim of the talks is to speed up the process of the transfer, with the Gunners desperate for a new striker. No formal proposal has been sent to Sporting, but Arsenal's move is 'well advanced'. Friday's briefing: Thomas Frank appointed new Tottenham manager
Tottenham appointed Thomas Frank their new manager after agreeing compensation with Brentford. England Under-21s began the defence of their European Championship crown with an impressive 3-1 win over the Czech Republic in Slovakia. Matheus Cunha completed his switch from Wolves to Manchester United, Napoli confirmed Kevin De Bruyne was set to join them from Manchester City and Real Madrid's summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold showed off his language skills. Spurs get Frank Tottenham confirmed Thomas Frank as the club's new head coach on a three-year deal. Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy moved swiftly for former Brentford boss Frank after they dismissed Ange Postecoglou only 16 days on from Europa League glory. Following negotiations with Brentford during the past week over Frank's reported £10million release clause and the backroom staff to be joining him, the 51-year-old Dane was finally confirmed on Thursday night. 'In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,' a club statement from Tottenham read. 'He has a proven track record in player and squad development. 'We look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.' Young Lions roar England Under-21s laid down a marker with a positive display as they beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in their opening European Championship Group B fixture in Dunajska Streda. Goals either side of the break from Harvey Elliott and Jonathan Rowe had put Lee Carsley's side in control at the MOL Arena. Daniel Fila reduced the deficit in the 50th minute, before England defender Charlie Cresswell headed in a third from a corner with 15 minutes left. Matheus Cunha heads to Old Trafford Manchester United confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves on a five-year deal, with the option of a further 12-month extension. United effectively completed the deal on June 1 after activating a £62.5million release clause in the 26-year old's contract. Cunha scored 31 goals in 76 appearances for Wolves, having joined from Atletico Madrid in 2023. 'Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt,' Cunha said. 'All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.' Kevin De Bruyne set for Naples switch Napoli confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne is to join them from Manchester City. The Belgium playmaker is out of contract at City this summer. De Bruyne, 33, will move to the Serie A champions after 10 years at City in which he won the Premier League six times and the Champions League. A tweet from Napoli, which showed De Bruyne sitting on a throne, read: 'King Kev is here', with a further post saying: 'Welcome to SS Napoli Kevin De Bruyne.' Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis also released a photograph of himself shaking hands with the midfielder. No contract details have yet been given. Trent settles in Trent Alexander-Arnold said joining Real Madrid was a 'dream come true' as he delivered his opening address to club dignitaries and invited guests in Spanish. The 26-year-old England international – who has signed a six-year deal after his contract with Liverpool expired – was watched by his family as he spoke confidently at his official presentation ahead of a press conference. 'This doesn't happen every day, it's a dream come true and I'm very happy and proud to be here,' Alexander-Arnold said after his 20-year association with Liverpool officially came to an end. 'I am going to give my all for the team and Real Madrid fans. 'I want to win many titles and I want to be a winner here and enjoy playing alongside the many great players.' What's on today? Manchester City and Chelsea continue their preparations for the Club World Cup, which starts in the United States on Saturday. City will open their campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia, while Chelsea face Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, with both group-stage fixtures taking place next week.

Arsenal respond to rejected Viktor Gyokeres bid as Man Utd submit rival offer
Arsenal and Manchester United have submitted offers for Viktor Gyokeres (AFP via Getty) Arsenal are preparing an improved bid for Viktor Gyokeres but Manchester United have also launched a rival offer for the Sporting CP striker, according to reports in Portugal. Earlier this week, Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for the Sweden international. However, Sporting turned down Arsenal's initial proposal worth an initial €55 million (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons. Sporting have made it clear that they are willing to sell Gyokeres for less than his €100m (£85.1m) release clause and are understood to be holding out for a fee closer to €80m (£68.1m). According to Maisfutebol, Arsenal are ready to submit an improved bid to Sporting with a package worth €70m (£59.6m) including bonuses. Viktor Gyokeres helped Sporting CP win the domestic double this season (AFP via Getty) The report claims that Sporting are prepared to hold another round of negotiations with Arsenal, while there is a 'growing optimism' in Gyokeres' camp that a deal can be agreed between the two clubs. It's also claimed that United remain in the race for Gyokeres and have made it clear to Sporting that they are willing to pay €60m (£51.1m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons. However, United are unable to offer Gyokeres the prospect of playing in Europe next season and it's reported that Ruben Amorim's side have 'encountered obstacles' in their direct talks with the striker, who finished the season with 54 goals in 52 games. Meanwhile, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres and his agent on Wednesday over suggestions that a transfer fee had been agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. 'It was agreed that Sporting would not demand the release clause at the end of the following season, especially because he was going to be 27,' Varandas said. 'Then, we knew Viktor's dream of going to a club where he could fight for the Champions League and we have common sense. We guaranteed that we would not demand €100 million. 'In that meeting, the agent wanted to anchor the departure to a value, he spoke of €60 million, €70 million… And I said 'there's no point in setting a value because I don't know what will happen here in a year, if he gets injured, if he has a disappointing season. 'There's no point in setting a value, I don't know if it will be €40m, €60m or €80m. What I can guarantee is that I will not demand €100 million. 'From then on, I never spoke to the agent again, I never spoke to the player about departures and values. More Trending 'Ten months have passed and I see the agent in the press spouting information here and there, but Sporting has common sense, it keeps its word. 'One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m plus €10m because I never promised him that. 'This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season.' On Thursday night, Gyokeres appeared to hit back at those claims in a post on Instagram which read: 'There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.'
