‘AIRA' an AI Co-Pilot for Health Workers in LMICs launched during the World Health Assembly 2025

Zawya23-05-2025
Leveraging its strength in digital health innovation, Qure.ai has launched a new AI-powered co-pilot tool for frontline healthcare workers in resource-constrained geographies this week during the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva.
'AIRA' is designed to optimize limited healthcare resources in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) by supporting AI-enabled digitization of symptoms and patient history collection; clinical protocol adherence and decision support; and aggregated population health insights.
There are 17 million preventable deaths in LMICs and an estimated shortage of 11 million health workers by 20301. At the same time, more than 40% of community health workers' time is spent on manual data collection, and yet countries do not have population-level data to make informed decisions. AIRA aims to solve this urgent need by freeing up precious health worker time to engage more with patients, while digitizing data automatically.
Speaking at the World Health Assembly side-event on AI, Prashant Warier, CEO and Founder of Qure.ai, said, 'With AI, we can make a seismic shift towards health equity in LMICs. AIRA in the hands of every healthcare worker will free up their time for more patient interactions via automated data collection and better clinical protocol adherence. With AI, we can multiply every dollar spent and realize significantly more impact and returns in LMIC health systems. We have demonstrated this in our last 10 years in TB and are motivated to do the same now for primary healthcare.'
Dr. Michel Sidibé, Special Envoy at the African Union, said, 'Health ministries in developing nations need to deliver healthcare to their populations at a fraction of the budget compared to developed countries. We have to be creative to make this happen. Digital health and AI are most certainly catalysts to improve efficiency, access, and quality of care.'
AIRA is an AI co-pilot for healthcare workers in LMICs. It is built on Large Language Models (LLMs) with a deep understanding of Low- and Middle-Income Country health systems and needs. It is designed to reduce administrative workload and free up time for better patient care, while enabling better protocol adherence and population insights.

Omani research team uses AI to detect genetic heart disorders

Muscat: A groundbreaking research initiative has made significant progress in identifying the genetic causes of cardiomyopathy in the Sultanate of Oman. The study, titled 'Implementation of Machine Learning Approach to Predict Pathogenicity of Genetic Variants Associated with Cardiomyopathy,' utilises Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) and advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies to investigate the underlying genetic contributors to this complex heart condition. The research was led by Dr. Ahmed Al Amri, Consultant of Molecular Genetics Lab and Head of Training and Professional Staff Development at the National Genetics Centre of the Royal Hospital. Cardiomyopathy, a heterogeneous group of myocardial disorders, remains a significant health burden worldwide. In the Sultanate of Oman, the genetic basis of the disease has been insufficiently characterised, hindering effective diagnosis and intervention. This study aimed to bridge that gap by conducting genetic analysis on a cohort of Omani families affected by cardiomyopathy. Dr. Ahmed Al Amri explained that central to the research is the development of a novel AI-based analysis model called 'CardioVar.' This model is designed to enhance the interpretation of WES data through the integration of more than 50,000 genetic variants and mutations linked to cardiomyopathy, supported by multiple AI algorithms to ensure analytical precision. The research project achieved a diagnostic success rate of over 80%, uncovering both known and previously unreported genetic mutations, some of which involve genes not previously linked to cardiomyopathy. These findings offer valuable insight into the genetic landscape of the disease within the Omani population and present new opportunities for further research to confirm the clinical relevance of novel variants. The AI model significantly improved both the speed and accuracy of genetic analysis, demonstrating its practical value in overcoming the limitations of traditional sequencing approaches. Dr. Al Amri emphasised that this approach not only advances the understanding of the genetic basis of cardiomyopathy in the Sultanate of Oman but also provides a scalable framework for implementing AI in genomic medicine, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and personalised care. The multidisciplinary research team included Dr. Ahmed Al Amri, Dr. Aisha Al Balushi, Nibras Al Mahrami, Dr. Musallam Al Ariami, Dr. Nadia Al Hashimi, Dr. Mohammed Al Rawahi, Dr. Tuqa Al Lawati, Dr. Bushra Al Shamsi, Dr. Fahad Al Hattali, and Ms. Mashael Al Balushi. Together, they have contributed to a practical model that blends clinical knowledge, laboratory science, and artificial intelligence to achieve high-impact results. This research not only advances the scientific understanding of inherited cardiomyopathy in the Sultanate of Oman but also exemplifies how AI can transform genetic diagnostics. It stands as a national model for the integration of precision medicine into routine clinical care, with plans to expand the study to include other hereditary heart conditions and incorporate its findings into everyday healthcare practices. © Muscat Media Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Riyadh - Calo, the Middle East's largest foodtech startup, has raised $39 million (SAR 146.27 million) in a series B extension round, bringing the total funding to $64 million (SAR 240 million). Led by AlJazira Capital, Oraseya Capital, Nuwa Capital, STV, Khwarizmi Ventures, and Al Faisaliah Group, the transaction follows an initial $25 million tranche secured in December 2024, according to a press release. The oversubscribed round supports Calo's global expansion plans, integration of recent UK acquisitions, and continued investment in AI-powered personalized nutrition. The CEO and Co-Founder of Calo, Ahmed Al Rawi, commented: 'We're living in an interesting time where AI is transforming our lives, and we're excited to be investing in cutting-edge innovation to explore how Calo can use AI to influence the future of how we discover and eat healthy food.' He added: 'Being vertically integrated with the mission of 'Making Healthy Easy' gives us an edge to develop and scale world-class experiences not just regionally, but also globally.' Calo recently acquired UK-based meal subscription brands Fresh Fitness Food and Detox Kitchen, integrating them into its operations and marking the company's entry into the European market. The company, which now operates more than 10 physical locations across the GCC, grew over 50% year-on-year (YoY) in the first half (H1) of 2025. Calo is piloting Calo Black, an AI-powered private chef experience that uses large language models (LLMs) to understand individual customer preferences through natural conversation and craft personalized daily menus. It is worth noting that Calo partnered with premium gym operator Armah Sports Company to expand wellness and retail offerings through co-located outlets, cross-promotions, and product distribution across gym networks. Riyadh-headquartered Calo operates in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait, with expansion now underway in the UK.
