Super Cup 2025: How Mohun Bagan could send FC Goa to asia
FC Goa will receive the confirmed slot in the 2025–26 AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2) playoffs if Mohun Bagan Super Giant goes on to win the Super Cup 2025, an All India Football Federation (AIFF) source informed Sportstar.
MBSG has already secured a spot in the group stage of the next edition of the second-tier of Asian continental club competition, after clinching the Indian Super League (ISL) League Winners Shield in late February. While, the second spot in the continental tournament goes to the winners of the Super Cup.
According to the source, if MBSG goes on to lift the Super Cup, the ACL2 playoffs spot is supposed to go to the winner of the ISL Cup, which in this case is once again the Mariners, after they beat Bengaluru FC 2-1 in the final earlier this month.

Should such a scenario arise, the spot will be awarded to the team that finished second in the league after the conclusion of the regular ISL season and not the runners-up of the Super Cup and the ISL Cup. FCG ended the league phase in second, eight points behind MBSG after 24 games, before exiting in the semifinal after a 2-3 aggregate loss against Bengaluru FC.
Both MBSG and FCG are set to face each other in the semifinal on April 30, after beating Kerala Blasters FC and Punjab FC, respectively, in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Therefore, even if FCG lose, it has the chance to book a berth in the playoffs of the continental tournament if MBSG goes on to lift the title.
FC Goa could also automatically secure the continental spot if it goes on to win the ongoing tournament in Bhubaneswar.

Hong Kong could be Marquez's last match as India coach
Kolkata: Manolo Marquez will hope to keep India on track for an unprecedented third successive Asian Cup finals berth when they face hosts Hong Kong in Tuesday's qualifier, which could be his last match as head coach. A win would be the ideal way to end his short India stint but for that Marquez's men will have to do what no Indian team has since 1957 – win in Hong Kong. All four teams in Group C, from where only the winners will qualify to the 2027 Asian Cup, have one point following 0-0 draws. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced a bonus of $50,000 should India win at the stadium in Kai Tak Sports Park which will be inaugurated with this match. The last time the teams met in 2022, India won 4-0 in Kolkata. Appointed last August, Marquez continued as FC Goa and India head coach till May 31. From June 1 to May 31, 2026, Marquez is on contract only as India coach but has said he would not like to continue, according to officials at AIFF, Goa Football Association and FC Goa. The officials requested anonymity given the sensitive nature of the issue. Having won the Super Cup with them, Marquez is likely to continue as FC Goa coach. HT had reported this in its edition on May 6, 2025. India have won only one of their seven matches under Marquez, four of them including the qualifier against Bangladesh ending in draws. To prepare for the Hong Kong tie, India played Thailand last week and lost 0-2. Marquez, 56, did not want to make much of that saying on Monday that 'coaches are not worried about scores in friendly games'. India have trained nearly three weeks for this match. 'Our preparations have been much better this time, if we compare with the previous FIFA windows where you practically don't have too much time,' said Marquez, who won the Indian Super League cup with Hyderabad FC in 2021-22. In defence, Anwar Ali has recovered from fever leaving only Subhasish Bose unavailable due to injury. Under Ashley Westwood, the former Bengaluru FC, Punjab FC and ATK coach, Hong Kong prepared for this match with a 1-3 defeat against Manchester United and a 0-0 draw against Nepal. Hong Kong drew 0-0 against Singapore in their first match of the qualifying campaign. Unlike India, they have naturalised players born in Brazil, Spain and Japan.

Namibia's Mouton eyes Top 14 'dream' with Grenoble
Namibia's Gerswin Mouton has experienced a path less trodden by most professional rugby players, but that will count for nothing as he aims to help fire Grenoble to the French Top 14 on Saturday. Since the 25-year-old winger was dropped by the Bulls after high shool, he has studied politics while playing at university in Johannesburg, featured at a World Cup and signed a short-term contract in Israel. This weekend, in-form Mouton and his Grenoble side face unfancied Montauban in the final of France's second-tier Pro D2, 80 minutes away from the promised land of the Top 14, the world's richest league. "It's what I've been striving for my whole career," Mouton told AFP on Wednesday. "It took me seven years to get to this point. "So if we can pull it off this weekend, it will be truly a dream come true for me with all the sacrifice and everything that I had to make." Mouton, who can also slot in at centre, made the first of his nine Test appearances for the Welwitschias in 2022 before scoring twice at the World Cup in France a year later. His performances earned him a contract at Tel-Aviv Heat in Rugby Europe's Super Cup but they played all their games abroad following an unprecedented attack on Israel launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023 from the Gaza Strip. "I didn't really spend time in Israel because of everything that was happening at that time," Mouton said. "We travelled quite a lot. "We went to Portugal, Spain, and then we stayed in Cyprus for a few weeks," he added. Mouton joined Grenoble, nestled in the French Alps and their snow-capped mountains, this season and has scored 14 tries, including 10 of them in his last six games. At the end of the campaign, his focus will turn to Namibia, ranked 25th in the world, and July's qualifying tournament for the 2027 World Cup, weeks after hosting Italy in a one-off Test. "Once the weekend is out of the way, I can start focusing on that," Mouton added. "But I'm quite excited for what's to come because we're going to play Italy in Namibia. That's quite a big deal for us." The politics graduate from Wits University will have a Namibian reunion at a sold-out Stade Ernest-Wallon, the 19,000-capacity home of French giants Toulouse, this weekend. Experienced lock Tjiuee Uanivi is set to feature for Montauban, who only stayed in the second-tier thanks to winning a relegation play-off last season. "It will be quite nice to play against him," Mouton said. "I really don't want to lose because he will rub it in my face when we have to go back to Namibia." Saturday offers Mouton's club, French first division champions in 1954, a chance at redemption. They finished top of the table after the regular season having tasted defeat in two straight Pro D2 finals as they eye a return to the Top 14 after relegation in 2019. "I think for the club it will be more personal because of the past two years," Mouton said. "So if we can go and pull this one off this year, it will be amazing." Youngsters should not jump into ISL, game time more important: Naushad Moosa
Naushad Moosa is coaching the India under-23 team Panaji: Naushad Moosa has returned as head coach of the India under-23 squad. This time, he has been handed a longer rope, stretching a year, and tasked with preparing the team for next year's Asian Games and the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, qualifiers for which will be held in September. Last year, Moosa, assistant to Juan Pedro at NorthEast United, was in charge of the under-23 team for two friendlies against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. 'The longer contract helps me understand the players better,' Moosa told TOI in a recent interview. 'I spoke with the AIFF and told them it's important to have longer camps as well, so that we can properly assess the players and opponents. I want to bring the best out of these players. Getting them to gel together, though, will be a challenge.' Moosa, a former international who played for India between 1994 and 1998 and won the SAFF Championship in 1997, has named a 29-member probable squad for the two friendlies in Dushanbe against Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic, later this month. A concern for Moosa is that a majority of players are with ISL clubs. Many of them are without enough playing time in the top tier of Indian football. 'The younger under-19 players, all of them want to play for ISL clubs. My advice is don't jump (straightway) into the ISL. Of course, you should try, but only a few make it to the top. The youngsters can sign for clubs where they get to play. At this age, it's important for them to be playing competitive matches. Sitting on the bench for financially-rich clubs doesn't really help in their growth as players,' said Moosa. 'The younger players in the ISL are not getting enough opportunities. There are a lot of promising players in the I-League who we will track,' added Moosa. From amongst the 29 probables, only a handful have featured regularly for their teams in the ISL. Just one among them, Vibin Mohanan, has a senior team appearance, though Ayush Chhetri, Abhishek Singh and Suhail Bhat, all aged below 23, are currently under Manolo Marquez with the national team. Mohammed Sanan, Nikhil Barla (both Jamshedpur), Korou Singh, Bikash Yumnam (both Kerala Blasters), Macarton Louis Nickson, Parthib Gogoi (both NorthEast United) and Dipendu Biswas (Mohun Bagan) are the more recognisable names among the under-23 probables. Only two players -- Rahul Raju (Gokulam Kerala) and Mohammad Arbaz (Real Kashmir) – are doing duty in the I-League, the second tier tournament. 'We need to have more camps, more exposure matches. If we cannot travel abroad, we can play here, but with stronger opponents. Losing is not a problem. It's important we play stronger opponents to prepare for the challenges. Our aim should not be to win SAFF. We must look at the bigger stage where we will be properly judged,' said Moosa. India U-23 will face Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic in two friendlies on June 18 and June 21 as part of the AIFF's long-term plans to smoothen a pathway to the senior national team. The team is in Kolkata where they will train before setting off for Dushanbe on June 16.
