Odisha Congress to open grievance cell, launch mobile app for women in distress

News186 days ago
Bhubaneswar, Jul 19 (PTI) The opposition Congress in Odisha has decided to open a dedicated women's cell and launch a mobile application to help women and girls in distress.
The party took the decision at its Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting held on Friday.
It was resolved in the PAC meeting that the life of the 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore could have been saved had any of the persons she had alerted through social media messages reacted.
The deceased woman, on July 1, days before resorting to self-immolation on July 12, had taken to X and tagged CMO_Odisha, DHE_Odisha, NCWIndia, and Union ministers, warning: 'They won't let me live in peace." Her tweet went unanswered.
The deceased student had also taken up the sexual harassment issue with the local MLA, MP, college authorities and the police. But, all remained silent till she set herself on fire, the Congress resolution said, adding that instead of getting help to fight injustice, she became a victim of humiliation.
Even the students of her own integrated BEd Department did not come to her rescue, her close friends have alleged.
In view of this situation, the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has decided to open a grievance cell at its state headquarters and launch a mobile application to come to the rescue of women, like the FM college student, in distress, PCC president Bhakta Charan Das said.
While thanking the people of Odisha for a successful statewide bandh on July 17, Das said the INDIA bloc parties, comprising the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation, All India Forward Bloc, RJD, SP, NCP and RJD, would jointly observe 'Shraddhanjali Divas' across the state on July 24, coinciding with the 11th day death ritual of the deceased woman.
She had set herself ablaze on July 12 and suffered 95 per cent burn injuries. She died on the night of July 14.
Mahila Congress members, along with the women's wings of other like-minded parties, will observe the day at different places, including universities and colleges, by holding silent prayers. Silence will be observed for two minutes in memory of all young women who have recently lost their lives to murders or suicides, Das said.
The Congress has also decided to organise mega rallies at six major places in the state over women's atrocities, floods and social justice. The party demanded a judicial inquiry into the Balasore student death case. PTI AAM AAM ACD

Muslim bodies urge govt to ensure end of Israeli aggression in Gaza

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) Prominent Muslim bodies and Islamic scholars on Friday appealed to the government to stand against injustice and take swift action to ensure that the 'continued Israeli aggression" in Gaza ends, asserting that India has historically aligned itself with the oppressed and it is time to reaffirm that legacy. In a joint statement, prominent Muslim organisations and Islamic scholars called on both the Indian government and global powers to intervene and stop the 'continuing atrocities" in Gaza. 'We, the undersigned leaders of Muslim organisations in India, Islamic scholars and peace-loving citizens strongly condemn the deepening genocide and humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. On behalf of over 200 million Indian Muslims and all peace-loving citizens of our beloved country, we express our unwavering support and solidarity with the people of Palestine," the statement said. 'We appeal to the government of India, international leaders, and people of conscience worldwide to stand against the injustice and take swift action to end the continued Israeli aggression," it said. 'The relentless assault on the Palestinian people has taken the form of a brutal genocide, characterised by systematic destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and refugee camps. Since October 2023, nearly 100,000 innocent Palestinians, including a significant number of women and children, have lost their lives," the statement claimed. The international community cannot afford to remain silent, it said. 'We call upon all states to sever military and economic ties with Israel and back the UN General Assembly's call to end the illegal occupation. We urge all Muslim-majority nations to put strong pressure on Israel and the US to halt this catastrophe," the statement said. 'India has historically aligned itself with the oppressed; this is the moment to reaffirm that legacy," it asserted. 'We call on the Government of India to honour its long-standing moral and diplomatic tradition by standing firmly with the Palestinian people in their struggle. India must denounce Israel's brutal actions, halt all military and strategic cooperation with it, and actively back global efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region," the statement said. The statement was signed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani, All India Muslim Personal Law Board president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind chief Syed Sadatullah Husaini, Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees Maulana Ali Asghar Imam Mehdi, Fatehpuri Mosque Imam Mufti Mukarram Ahmad, and former Rajya Sabha MP Maulana Obaidullah Khan Azmi, among others. Surat: Two persons have been accused of defamation and offences under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on a complaint filed by Congress MLA and former central minister Tushar Chaudhary with Tapi district police. The FIR states that the accused, Jagdish Mehta, made defamatory comments during a debate with Ghangar on the latter's YouTube platform, expressing doubts about Chaudhary's tribal status. Oppn blames govt for not ensuring jobs for locals

Porvorim: Blaming govt for doing little to ensure employment opportunities for locals, legislators on Friday said that private companies continue to flout recruitment norms by hiring workers from other states. Legislators said that with over 1.2 lakh Goan youth registered with the employment exchange, sustainable job opportunities are required to ensure that local youth are gainfully employed. The MLAs pointed out that Goa's unemployment rate is pegged at 19%, one of the highest in the country. Govt said that the employment exchange registrations are inflated as many applicants do not remove their names in the hope of landing a govt job. Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira moved a private member's resolution asking govt to address the issue of unemployment in the state. Ferreira said that govt must ensure that Goans are 'prioritised' in recruitment opportunities. Ferreira also demanded stringent measures to guarantee transparency in the recruitment process, equitable access, and protection of the rights of those already employed. 'Companies like Cipla, which are heavily favoured by govt, are not even hiring locals,' Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai said.
