Budge Budge woman speaking in Bengali grilled by Mum cops

Kolkata: A 39-year-old Budge Budge woman speaking with her elder son in Bengali while returning from work in Navi Mumbai was taken to a local police station for questioning on being suspected to be Bangladeshi.
The Budge Budge police station quickly conducted a background verification check and informed their Mumbai counterparts, leading to her release.
The victim, Soma Bibi (39), said the incident took place around 8 pm on Aug 7. While returning home from the mall she works at, Soma was speaking to her elder son in Budge Budge over phone. A woman in plain clothes allegedly stopped her, asked where she lived, what she did, and demanded to see her identity documents.
Despite showing multiple IDs, the woman was reportedly unsatisfied and took Soma to the police station.
Soma said she refused to enter the lock-up, telling officers, "I have committed no crime. Please give me time, I will produce all documents." The hapless family in Budge Budge also approached the office of Trinamool national secretary Abhishek Banerjee, also the local MP. His office coordinated with police, the family said.

Soma has been living alone in Navi Mumbai since her husband returned to Budge Budge seven months ago to attend to urgent family matters. Her two sons and their wives had returned earlier. The family is now arranging for Soma's immediate return. Originally from Pokpari village in Budge Budge, the Zamadar family — parents, two sons, and their wives — moved to Navi Mumbai for work in 2019.
Soma initially worked as a domestic help before joining the mall.
Her elder son, Sahabuddin Zamadar, said, "We believe this was nothing but harassment because she is Bengali. She showed her Aadhaar card, voter ID, mall ID, and proof of residence from Budge Budge. The local authorities called the police, but they weren't satisfied. We had no option but to approach Abhishek Banerjee, whose intervention finally secured her release."

Ferozepur: Police have foiled a major terror attack planned by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to disrupt Independence Day celebrations in Punjab. An influencer and self-described actor with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, Sandeepa Virk , has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a Rs 40-crore money laundering case, PTI reported. Virk is accused of defrauding individuals by soliciting funds under false pretences and misrepresentation. She promoted herself as the owner of a website claiming to sell FDA-approved beauty products . Investigators found that the products did not exist, the website lacked user registration features, faced persistent payment gateway failures, and had negligible social media engagement. Furthermore, its WhatsApp contact number was inactive, and no transparent company details were available, suggesting a non-genuine commercial operation allegedly used as a front for laundering funds. Searches at Sethuraman's residence allegedly confirmed involvement in 'illegal liaising work' and diversion of funds for personal gain. Investigators said that in 2018, public funds worth approximately Rs 18 crore from Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL) were disbursed to Sethuraman without due diligence and under irregular lending terms that allowed deferments and multiple waivers. In addition, a Rs 22-crore home loan was allegedly sanctioned by Reliance Capital Limited in violation of prudential norms. Large portions of these funds were reportedly siphoned off and remain unpaid. In a statement to PTI, Sethuraman denied the allegations, calling them 'baseless,' and refuted any connection with Virk or any transactions related to her. During the raids, the ED seized incriminating documents and recorded statements of several key individuals, including one Farrukh Ali. Virk was arrested on 12 August under provisions of the PMLA and produced before a court, which sent her to ED custody until Friday. ‘Vacancy date doesn't mean promotion date': HC says no to backdated DSP promotions
1 2 Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed a petition filed by some officers of Haryana Police seeking retrospective promotion to the rank of deputy duperintendent of Police (DSP) from June 2019. The court held that no legal right exists for employees to demand backdated promotions in the absence of favouritism, fraud, or misuse of power. "The sole grievance of petitioners is that in 2019, a small batch was going to be promoted; however, in 2020, a larger batch was promoted, which is going to affect their future prospects. The reason advanced by petitioners is neither convincing nor plausible. Promotion is not a matter of right, even though part of conditions of service and governed by Article 16 of the Constitution of India. In the absence of favouritism, fraud, or misuse of power on the part of respondents, the petitioners cannot be granted promotion from a retrospective date," the HC held. Justice Jagmohan Bansal passed these orders while dismissing a petition filed by Vikash Kaushik and another officer. However, the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting scheduled in Sep 2019 was cancelled due to an interim order in a case filed before the high court. That matter was only resolved in July 2020. By then, the DPC met again on June 27, 2020, and considered 41 posts for promotion, finding 35 inspectors eligible — including the petitioners. They were promoted on Aug 5, 2020, but only prospectively. The petitioners argued that the delay was intentional and disadvantaged them, as more officers were promoted in the 2020 batch, potentially affecting their future prospects of becoming IPS officers. They sought directions for "ante-dated" promotions from June 2019. Opposing their plea, the state contended that no junior to the petitioners was promoted before them and that delays were due to judicial proceedings, not malice. After hearing all the parties, the HC dismissed the petition, holding that there is neither any allegation nor evidence of fraud against the respondents.
