Hong Kong fencer Cheung Ka-long shown red card, but teammate then wins first Asian title

Olympic champion Cheung Ka-long was denied the chance to reclaim his regional throne after a controversial decision at the Asian Fencing Championships in Bali on Thursday, but the glory went instead to compatriot Ryan Choi Chun-yin, who won his maiden Asian title.

In Cheung's second-round men's foil match, he was adjudged by the head referee from South Africa to have hit China's Mo Ziwei in his head intentionally, after the red light on the piste signalling a point for the Hongkonger had been lit. The point would have tied the match at 14 points each.
But former Asian champion Mo fell onto the ground and asked for a video review, and suggested Cheung had hit him in his mask.
Mo, who won in Wuxi in 2023, called for medical help and minutes later, referee Eugene Chua Wee-hong of Singapore – after head referee Irina Knysch stepped in – showed two-time Asian champion Cheung a straight red card and awarded Mo the winning point, and the Chinese fencer progressed with a 15-13 win.
Cheung and Greg Koenig, head coach of the city's foil team, debated with the referees for a long time, but their efforts were in vain.

Hong Kong team officials said the rule book signalled a red card if a fencer was deemed to have 'intentionally' hit the opponent in the head.

World Games: Hong Kong drone racer Kwan Chun-yan wins silver to help city to best showing

Air sports exponent Kwan Chun-yan finished between two world champions in the sport to win Hong Kong's sixth and final medal at the World Games in Chengdu, in a performance described by the team chief as 'calm and composed'. Kwan's silver in the drone racing final on Saturday helped Hong Kong to their best performance at the multi-sport event, with three golds, two silvers and one bronze in Chengdu, through wushu (two golds, one silver), karate (one gold), air sports (one silver), and waterski and wakeboard (one bronze). The previous best result was five medals – one gold and four bronze – at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, Alabama, in the US. Kwan, 17, competed in an arduous series of nine races over two days, including three in the final on Saturday, to finish second behind Japan's Yuki Hashimoto, the current world champion. Hashimoto won two out of the three races in the final with a total time of one minute 28.337 seconds, while Kwan finished with a time of 1:30.889. South Korea's Kim Min-jae, the 2022 world champion, came in third. Kwan Chun-yan with the Hong Kong flag after his silver medal finish. Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr head for early Sunday training session

Cristiano Ronaldo and his Al-Nassr teammates headed out for an early training session in the city on Sunday, the Post understands, as preparations for the Saudi Super Cup continue. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward's arrival in Hong Kong has generated excitement among local fans. At the Regent Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui, where the five-time Ballon d'Or winner and his teammates are staying, devoted fan Emma Liu, who travelled from Beijing on Saturday, had booked herself into the same hotel as her hero. Liu, who began idolising Ronaldo following his 2003 transfer to Manchester United, was patiently waiting in the lobby hoping for a first meeting with the 40-year-old. 'He's very charming, for sure, and, on top of that … he's always motivated and self-disciplined, and he's such a good footballer,' said Liu, who had to miss Ronaldo's 2018 trip to Nanjing because of illness.
