Recces, phone calls, fake client ruse: Five, including wife, held for Gadwal man's murder

The Hindu2 days ago

A 32-year-old private land surveyor from Gadwal was found murdered in Andhra Pradesh's Nandyal district, 30 days after his wedding. The body was recovered over 200 kilometres from his hometown, near the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) canal on June 21. The Gadwal police have detained five suspects, including his wife, Iswarya, a native of Kurnool, in what the police said was a premeditated murder linked to an affair.
The case resembles the recent Meghalaya honeymoon murder, in which an Indore-based newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi was killed by his wife and her lover during the couple's honeymoon in the East Khasi Hills.
The victim in the Gadwal case, Tejeswar, who is also a dance teacher, stepped out for work on June 17 but did not return home, prompting his brother to file a missing person complaint on June 18. After tracking the mobile location, the body was found near the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) canal.
Gadwal Town Sub Inspector of Police Kummari Srinivas, who is investigating the case, said the murder was premeditated and appears to be linked to Iswarya's alleged affair with Tirumala Rao, a manager at a non-banking finance company in Gadwal. The two were allegedly involved for the past three years, despite Mr. Rao being married for the last six years.
CCTV footage showed Tejeswar getting into a sedan with three occupants, all contract killers hired by Mr. Rao. The men claimed that a land parcel near Erravalli needed a survey. Unaware of their intentions, he joined them.
'The vehicle drove towards Erravalli and stopped at Veerapuram stage, off the national highway (NH) 44. There, the assailants attacked him with a knife and suffocated him by sitting on his neck. His body was later dumped over 100 kilometres away near the HNSS canal,' the official explained.
Meticulous planning
The official said that the murder was the result of meticulous planning that spanned nearly three months. 'The hired killers had been conducting repeated reccees along the route from Kurnool to Gadwal, closely studying the victim's movements and familiarising themselves with possible escape paths. Mobile phone records have revealed frequent communication between the accused, all pointing that the suspects carefully planning each stage of the crime,' the official explained.
The wedding between Tejeswar and Iswarya was originally scheduled for January 10 but was called off by the victim's family based on some suspicion. However, Iswarya later persuaded Tejeswar, and the two tied the knot on May 18.
'This change of plans could be a part of the larger manipulation, as the timeline suggests that planning for the murder began shortly after the couple reunited,' the official said.
Further investigation is underway.

UP govt expedites process to recover Rs 650cr dues from toll collection firms

1 2 Lucknow: The UP govt has to recover more than Rs 650 crore dues from the highway toll management companies. Following the Bhadohi case — where a Delhi-based firm secured lease for toll collection in UP by paying just Rs 100 stamp duty instead of Rs 63 cores — the stamp and registration department carried out an audit to find the status of all pending recovery cases. The stamp and registration department has started reaching out to the district administration in 31 districts to expedite the recovery process. A total of 95 cases pertaining to evasion of stamp duty by toll companies have been detected. While the majority of cases are pending with operators who entered into an agreement with the National Highways Authority of India, operators engaged by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority for toll collection over expressways are also yet to make payments. Among the 95 cases, 23 cases are sub-judice while 72 cases are pending before collectors in various districts. Among the 72, recovery proceedings have been initiated against the promoters of 17 private agencies engaged for toll collection. UP stamp department minister Ravindra Jaiswal said, "The dues collected from the toll operators will be used to upgrade the public infrastructure and fund the social sector schemes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fastest Selling Plots of Mysore from 40L | 40+ Amenities PurpleBrick Learn More Undo Senior officials concerned have been asked to follow up on the old cases pending before courts and magistrates." While the company engaged by NHAI to manage the Meerut expressway has the highest stamp duty dues of around Rs 26 crore, the one managing the Lucknow–Rae Bareli national highway has to pay Rs 10 crore. Interestingly, 15 out of 95 toll operators had entered into an agreement with NHAI on stamp paper worth Rs 100, whereas, as per the estimates prepared by the department, such companies need to cough up Rs 130.40 crore. Though in some cases the procedure to recover the amount was initiated more than five years ago, the matter picked pace only from Oct last year after the state govt urged the district collectors to expedite the process. In July last year, the Supreme Court while disposing of a similar case from Madhya Pradesh had dubbed the concession agreement between toll operators and NHAI as a lease, putting the liability of paying the stamp duty on the agreement value over the value mentioned in the contract.

Dubbed Operation Chakra-V, the exercise aims to dismantle the infrastructure behind cybercrimes, particularly those involving mule bank accounts. According to sources, CBI's investigation has revealed that organised scammers were using mule bank accounts to transfer proceeds of cyber frauds, including digital arrest scams, impersonation, fraudulent advertisements, investment frauds, and UPI-based financial frauds. These fraudsters were being aided by certain bank officials, agents, aggregators, bank correspondents, middlemen, and e-Mitras who were facilitating the opening of mule accounts. Branch managers had also failed to conduct Enhanced Due Diligence on suspicious transaction alerts. Some banks had not sent acknowledgement letters to customers to verify their addresses. During the searches, the CBI has seized incriminating documents, digital evidence, mobile phones, bank account opening documents, transaction details, and KYC documents. Nine accused individuals, including middlemen, agents, aggregators, account holders, and bank correspondents, were arrested for their involvement in opening and facilitating mule bank accounts.
