Guardiola and Xavi applications a hoax, says Indian football
Subrata Paul, national team director of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), said earlier this week that Xavi had applied to the vacant job.
But the AIFF this weekend said the approaches were not "genuine."
"The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement.
Manchester City manager Guardiola's application was never reported earlier.
The Indian men's team are without a coach since Spaniard Manolo Marquez stepped down earlier this month as head coach after just one year and one win in eight games.
The AIFF advertised the vacancy, and later said it received 170 applications.
India's men are 133rd in the FIFA rankings — their lowest placing in nearly a decade — and have won just one of their last 16 matches.

Goalkeeper Trafford returns to Man City from Burnley in £27.5m buy-back deal
LONDON, July 30 — Goalkeeper James Trafford has signed a deal to return to Manchester City from Burnley, the Premier League giants announced on Tuesday. Man City activated a £27.5 million (RM155.5 million) buy-back clause for the 22-year-old England youth international, according to British media reports. Trafford, who never played for the City senior team during his first spell at the Etihad Stadium, left for Burnley in 2023. He struggled in his first season as the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League, but equalled an English football record with 29 clean sheets last term to help Burnley earn promotion back into the top flight. 'This is the place I call home — it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play,' he said in a statement. 'I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving — and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be. 'I will do everything I can to help this great club look to achieve even more success.' City coach Pep Guardiola dropped established number one Ederson multiple times last season in favour of Stefan Ortega. Trafford, who will wear the number one shirt, will battle with Brazilian Ederson to be first choice. He is Man City's sixth signing of the transfer window after they finished third last season, well adrift of champions Liverpool in their bid for a fifth straight Premier League title. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki and Sverre Nypan have all already moved to the club since the end of last season. — AFP

Man City re-sign goalkeeper Trafford from Burnley on five-year deal
GOALKEEPER James Trafford has returned to Manchester City on a five-year contract after helping Burnley earn a promotion back to the Premier League with the fewest goals conceded in the Championship last season, City said on Tuesday. Englishman Trafford, who won the golden glove with 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, has re-joined the club where he spent eight years as a youth player for £27 million (US$36 million), English media reports said. "Rejoining City is such special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City," Trafford said in a statement shared by City. "This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play." Trafford played on loan at third-tier sides Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent move to Burnley in 2023, where he played his first full season in the Premier League, making 28 appearances as the club was relegated. But the six-foot-six keeper returned to form in the Championship last season, with Burnley conceding only 16 goals in the campaign, 14 fewer than champions Leeds United. "I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be," Trafford added. City, who begin their quest for a seventh Premier League title in nine seasons when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16, said Trafford would wear the number one jersey. — REUTERS

Inaki Williams proud to represent migrants as Athletic Bilbao's first black captain
ATHLETIC BILBAO'S first ever black captain Inaki Williams expressed pride at representing immigrants in Spain and called out the far right on Tuesday, after rare anti-migrant unrest shocked the country. Williams, 31, and his younger brother Nico are stars of the club which traditionally only fields players born or brought up in the Basque Country that straddles northern Spain and southwestern France. Bilbao-born Williams has spoken of how his Ghanaian parents crossed the Sahara on foot en route to Spain, with his mother clambering over the perilous border fence separating the Spanish exclave of Melilla from Morocco while pregnant with him. Asked about becoming the club's first black captain after the retirement of Oscar de Marcos and amid rising support for the far right, the Ghana striker told a press conference 'it means a lot'. 'Destiny is destiny. If it were not for my parents, I would not be here, nor Nico,' he said. 'We are lucky to be able to represent many people who come from outside to earn their daily bread, and be a reference... it's important for us.' An immigration debate gripped Spain earlier this month after three nights of violence between far-right groups and residents, many of North African origin, in the southeastern town of Torre Pacheco. The far-right Vox party, which has climbed in recent polls, seized on the unrest that erupted after a 68-year-old pensioner in Torre Pacheco told media he was attacked by three men of North African origin. Vox has also proposed the deportation of all irregular migrants, with tens of thousands arriving on Spanish shores every year on boats from Africa. 'It seems that the far right is in fashion. We who have a voice will try to keep working, to continue silencing mouths and keep tearing down barriers,' Williams said. The Williams brothers are set to play a pivotal role in Bilbao's upcoming domestic and Champions League campaigns after Spain forward Nico, 23, turned down reported interest from Barcelona and signed a new long-term contract. - AFP
