Ukraine's Zelenskyy claims Chinese nationals helping Russia produce drones
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Chinese citizens are helping to produce drones at a facility in Russia and suggested that Moscow may have 'stolen' drone technology from Beijing.
The Ukrainian leader made the comment at a news conference in Kyiv on Tuesday, just days after he said China was supplying weapons and gunpowder to Russia and following the recent capture of two Chinese nationals fighting for Russia against Ukrainian forces.
'I asked the Security Service of Ukraine to transfer information of a broader nature to the Chinese side regarding Chinese citizens who work at the drone factory,' Zelenskyy told the news conference.
'We believe that it may be that Russia stole – made an agreement with these citizens outside the agreements with the Chinese leadership – stole these technologies,' he said.
'The information also describes the relevant Chinese technologies for working on these drones. I think it will be important for Beijing to see how their partners are working with them,' he said, according to the Ukrinform news site.
The Ukrainian president's suggestion that Russia may have obtained drone technology from China without Beijing's knowledge may indicate a softening of Zelenskyy's tone towards the Chinese, the Reuters news agency said. China has strongly denied involvement in Russia's war on Ukraine.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that it had summoned Chinese Ambassador Ma Shengkun to express Ukraine's 'serious concerns about the facts of the participation of Chinese citizens in military action against Ukraine'.
Zelenskyy previously said at least 155 Chinese were fighting with the Russian army – two of whom were recently captured by Ukraine – and that he had 'information' that China was supplying arms to Russia.
Ukraine's 'Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis stressed that the participation of Chinese citizens in hostilities against Ukraine on the side of the aggressor state, as well as the involvement of Chinese companies in the production of military products in Russia, are of serious concern and contradict the spirit of partnership between Ukraine and China,' the ministry said in a statement.

The deputy foreign minister 'called on the Chinese side to take measures to stop supporting Russia in its aggression against Ukraine, which Beijing has repeatedly stated is not the case,' the ministry added.
China last week staunchly denied providing weapons.
'The Chinese side has never provided lethal weapons to any party in the conflict, and strictly controls dual-use items,' Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Friday.
There was no immediate comment on the latest Ukrainian statements from either Russia or China.

Ukraine and Russia have swapped prisoners of war (POWs), the warring sides said, after Moscow also handed over the bodies of 1,200 Ukrainian soldiers to Kyiv. 'We continue to take our people out of Russian captivity. This is the fourth exchange in a week,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media on Saturday. The latest POW exchange between Russia and Ukraine came after Moscow alleged that Kyiv had indefinitely postponed the swap of wounded and seriously ill POWs and those under the age of 25, as well as the return of the bodies of thousands of soldiers on each side. The swap came as Russia intensified its offensive along the front line, especially in the northeastern Sumy region, where it seeks to establish a 'buffer zone'. Zelenskyy claimed Russia's advance on Sumy was stopped, adding that Kyiv's forces have managed to retake one village. Taiwan sentences Chinese captain to 3 years for undersea cable damage
Taipei: A court in Taiwan on Thursday sentenced a Chinese captain to three years in prison in the first criminal case involving damage to Taiwan's undersea cables. The Tainan District Court found the man, identified by the surname Wang, guilty of violating the Telecommunications Act. The verdict is subject to appeal. According to the court, a Togolese-registered cargo ship backed by Chinese capital and controlled by Wang severed an undersea cable between Taiwan and the strategically important Penghu Islands, located in the Taiwan Strait, in February. Wang admitted to instructing crew members on the Hongtai 58 to drop the anchor but denied allegations of intentionally causing damage. Taiwan's Coast Guard called the incident a 'gray zone activity,' indicating Beijing's use of pressure tactics without open conflict as part of its ongoing efforts against Taipei. Kiev says over 1mn Russian troops killed or injured in war
Kiev: More than 1 million Russian soldiers have been killed or injured since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the General Staff in Kiev said on Thursday. It said 1,000,340 Russian soldiers had either died in battle or been injured. The figure cannot be verified. A single 24-hour period saw 1,140 Russian soldiers killed or injured, bringing the toll above the psychologically significant 1-million-mark, according to Kiev. Ukraine released the figure on Russia Day, a national holiday that marks the founding of the Russian Federation following the collapse of the Soviet Union. In April, NATO put the number of Russian casualties at around 900,000. A senior NATO official said the dead numbered up to 250,000. Russia does not release figures on casualties. (DPA)
