'Groundless accusations, political manipulations' — China reacts to Ukraine summoning its envoy

China's Foreign Ministry on April 23 accused Ukraine of making "groundless" accusations after the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned a Chinese ambassador to present evidence of Chinese involvement in Russia's war. A day earlier, Chinese Ambassador to Ukraine Ma Shengkun was invited to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to meet with Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis. Perebyinis presented the Chinese ambassador with evidence of Chinese citizens' participation in hostilities against Ukraine on Russia's side and the involvement of Chinese companies in the production of military products in Russia. The evidence was also passed on to the Chinese side by the Ukrainian security services. The Chinese Foreign Ministry called Ukraine's recent statements "groundless" and "political manipulations." "We have clarified China's position on the relevant issues. China strongly opposes groundless accusations and political manipulations," Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said during a press briefing. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 17 that China is supplying weapons to Russia, marking Kyiv's first confirmation that Beijing supports Russia's war effort by direct military aid. Iran and North Korea are two other allies of Moscow that supply Russia with arms. Though Beijing has long denied supplying arms, multiple reports have suggested otherwise. In summer 2024, Zelensky said China had assured Ukraine it would not deliver weapons to Russia. While officially claiming neutrality, Beijing has deepened economic ties with Moscow, supported Russia against Western sanctions, and emerged as a top supplier of dual-use goods that feed the Russian defense sector. Earlier this month, Ukrainian forces captured two Chinese nationals fighting for Russia in Donetsk Oblast. Zelensky later said that "several hundred" Chinese nationals were fighting on Russia's side. China has denied any direct involvement in the war and claimed it has urged its citizens to avoid armed conflicts. Ukraine summons Chinese ambassador, urges Beijing to stop helping Russia

Ukraine's foreign ministry says it has summoned the ambassador from China and asked the country to stop supporting Russia in its aggression against Ukraine. The report says China's Ambassador to Ukraine, Ma Shengkun, visited the ministry on Tuesday and met with Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis. The ministry said Perebyinis expressed deep concerns about the alleged involvement of Chinese citizens in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the alleged participation by Chinese firms in the production of military materials in Russia. The deputy minister is said to have emphasized that such reports contradict the spirit of partnership between Ukraine and China, and urged China to halt any support for the Russian invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a news conference on Tuesday that he has information that Chinese citizens are working in Russia at a drone manufacturing plant. He referred to the possibility that Russia has stolen drone technologies from these Chinse citizens without the consent of the Chinese government. Zelenskyy said last week that his country had information that China is supplying weapons to Russia. Early in April, he also announced that the Ukrainian side captured two Chinese men fighting for Russia in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian foreign ministry said it had presented the evidence to the Chinese ambassador at the meeting. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun dismissed the Ukrainian claims on Wednesday, reiterating Beijing's firm opposition to what he called groundless accusations and political manipulation.

Ukraine's Zelenskyy claims Chinese nationals helping Russia produce drones

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Chinese citizens are helping to produce drones at a facility in Russia and suggested that Moscow may have 'stolen' drone technology from Beijing. The Ukrainian leader made the comment at a news conference in Kyiv on Tuesday, just days after he said China was supplying weapons and gunpowder to Russia and following the recent capture of two Chinese nationals fighting for Russia against Ukrainian forces. 'I asked the Security Service of Ukraine to transfer information of a broader nature to the Chinese side regarding Chinese citizens who work at the drone factory,' Zelenskyy told the news conference. 'We believe that it may be that Russia stole – made an agreement with these citizens outside the agreements with the Chinese leadership – stole these technologies,' he said. 'The information also describes the relevant Chinese technologies for working on these drones. I think it will be important for Beijing to see how their partners are working with them,' he said, according to the Ukrinform news site. The Ukrainian president's suggestion that Russia may have obtained drone technology from China without Beijing's knowledge may indicate a softening of Zelenskyy's tone towards the Chinese, the Reuters news agency said. China has strongly denied involvement in Russia's war on Ukraine. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that it had summoned Chinese Ambassador Ma Shengkun to express Ukraine's 'serious concerns about the facts of the participation of Chinese citizens in military action against Ukraine'. Zelenskyy previously said at least 155 Chinese were fighting with the Russian army – two of whom were recently captured by Ukraine – and that he had 'information' that China was supplying arms to Russia. Ukraine's 'Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis stressed that the participation of Chinese citizens in hostilities against Ukraine on the side of the aggressor state, as well as the involvement of Chinese companies in the production of military products in Russia, are of serious concern and contradict the spirit of partnership between Ukraine and China,' the ministry said in a statement. ⚡️Ukraine shares evidence of Chinese citizens, companies involved in Russia's war. The deputy foreign minister 'called on the Chinese side to take measures to stop supporting Russia in its aggression against Ukraine, which Beijing has repeatedly stated is not the case,' the ministry added. China last week staunchly denied providing weapons. 'The Chinese side has never provided lethal weapons to any party in the conflict, and strictly controls dual-use items,' Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Friday. There was no immediate comment on the latest Ukrainian statements from either Russia or China.
