DJ Maphorisa allegedly leaves event organiser out in the cold

TimesLIVE23-04-2025

Phola Sunday shared a statement addressing the matter.
'We would like to first thank all the guest who came out in numbers to support Phola Sundays hangover Easter edition and the sponsors (SAB). The turnout was great and all the DJs showed up and played their part.
'It was with sadness and heartbreaking when DJ Maphorisa did not show up as he was one of the main reasons people had paid for tickets to the event. We tried our best to communicate on the day but him not showing up was out of our hands and control.
'We have asked him and his team to issue a statement as the no show has crushed what we've tried to build as Phola Sundays. A statement from him will liberate us as a brand and we will try to do better than this event.
'Our sincere apology to the guests that came through to support and we will do everything in our power to get the statement from 'Phori' and move on from this. We thank everyone for the unlimited support you show us and your continued support is and will be highly appreciated. Thank you.'

Miley Cyrus reflects on family: how Billy Ray's love life changed their bond

Miley Cyrus discusses growth and challenges in her relationship with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus. The singer also shared her thoughts on her father's new relationship. Image: Instagram/Miley Cyrus US singer Miley Cyrus opened up about her relationship with her parents' relationship while sharing her thoughts about her father, Billy Ray Cyrus' romance with Elizabeth Hurley. Hurley and Cyrus went public with their relationship early this year, in April during the Easter weekend. In an interview with the 'New York Times', Miley shared that as much as Billy Ray is her father, he is also a person who deserves happiness too. 'At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy',' the 'Hannah Montana' star said. However, seven months later, in May 2024, the pair divorced after Billy Ray filed for divorce. Miley also added that she no longer has an estranged relationship with her father and shared insights into what led to it: her parents' divorce. 'I think timing is everything. As I've gotten older, I'm respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents - because my mom really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,' the 38-year-old singer said. The pop singer continued and shared that after her mother and father divorced, she took on some of her mother's pain as her own, revealing that 'I owned a lot of her pain". Ray and Tish Cyrus-Purcell tied the knot in 1993, and after three decades of marriage, Cyrus-Purcell filed for divorce. In 2023, Tish married Dominic Purcell, whom Miley has expressed that she adores. 'Now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too - I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,' she shared. Just a few weeks ago, Miley shut down rumours that she is feuding with her family after fans noticed that her mother unfollowed her.

Samthing Soweto thanks fans with ‘Deda' release and exciting new album announcement

Samthing Soweto released his single, 'Deda', and announced that he will also be releasing an album in July. Image: Instagram Musical sensation Samthing Soweto, real name Samkelo Mdolomba, has fulfilled his promise to fans with the long-awaited release of his single "Deda". The track, which has been buzzing on social media for over two years, has finally made its debut on streaming platforms across South Africa, much to the delight of his devoted followers. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Mdolomba expressed gratitude towards his supporters, acknowledging their unwavering loyalty during his period of silence. 'Ngiyabonga (Thank you) to everyone who stood by me while I was silent. Even when I stopped posting, you kept my name alive, making my song ideas trend like full releases. That gave me the courage to keep going,' he shared, demonstrating a deep appreciation for the connection he has with his fans. Adding to the excitement, Soweto announced that he would follow up this release with a new album titled "Touch Is a Move: Good Morning" on July 4. 'I've been moving around South Africa, working with many incredible people like Producer/Musician @John Lundun and my co-writer on this song, @Anzo, to shape this and the album that follows. But it starts here, with #Deda,' he emphasised, expressing his determination to bring fresh sounds to the industry. Closing his message with the uplifting phrase, 'Mabudede ubumnyama buvele ukukhanya! (May darkness fade and the light come forth),' he reinforced his artistic vision and resilience. However, the past year has not been without its challenges for Soweto. The artist found himself embroiled in a public spat with amapiano heavyweight DJ Maphorisa over the credits for the song "Amalanga Awafani". Fans raised eyebrows at the absence of Soweto's name from the credits, which ignited heated discussions across social media platforms. The disagreement stemmed from a contentious dispute over master rights, leaving Soweto feeling overlooked. In an unexpected turn, Soweto admitted to misrepresenting Maphorisa's contributions to his successful 2019 album "Isiphithiphithi", stating, 'I lied about Maphorisa's contributions to my project. He didn't produce anything.' Reflecting on his past decisions, he confessed that his dishonesty was rooted in insecurity; he believed aligning himself with Maphorisa would bolster his record sales. He later acknowledged that it was actually Kabza De Small, Howard, and Mas Musiq who were responsible for 60% of the album's production. This strategy may have yielded short-term gains, but ultimately cost him his creative rights and dignity. The release of 'Deda' has evoked poignant reactions among fans, who have rallied around Soweto. Their sentiments were evident in the comments section of his post. @creativ_ally9 remarked, 'DEDA hits differently with me. I used it when I was preparing my son's UMGIDI. Very special indeed. You are special,' while @_ulola reflected on Soweto's journey, sharing, 'I love the cover because it embraces his journey ❤️.' @queenlizbaloyi said: 'Already pre-added your album on Apple Music 🥺🫂 Thank you for not being discouraged. They can talk, but they can never deny your talent. You are a gift and a national treasure ❤️🙏🏾.' While @miss_fundi said: 'We stood with you when you chose to leave the soil, loved and supported you way back then; nothing can ever make us back down. Thank you for not giving up ♥️ we won't give up on you ♥️.' Clearly, the artist's story resonates strongly with his audience, which has only intensified their support. As fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming album and continue to celebrate "Deda", it becomes clear that Samthing Soweto's journey embodies the triumph of resilience through adversity. Despite the challenges faced, his unwavering commitment to his craft shines through, keeping the spirit of South African music alive and thriving.

WATCH: Shocking! Fan tries to kiss Maphorisa's mid-set

With a drink in one hand and confidence in the other, she leans in toward Phori's face, seemingly going in for a kiss. In a viral moment that has left social media in heated debate, an overzealous female fan stormed DJ Maphorisa's set, bottle in hand, and attempted to plant a kiss on the Amapiano king mid-performance. 'Imagine seeing your girl doing this…people have no boundaries!' said @SbuWav on X (Twitter). The incident, which took place over the weekend, was caught on video and quickly made the rounds online, sparking a fierce cultural conversation about boundaries, fan behaviour, and celebrity reactions. Dj Maphorisa moving away from a lady who attempted to kiss him on stage. Women are something else dammmm — Misinformation Crusher (@MisInfoCrusher) May 18, 2025 The footage shows Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, popularly known as Maphorisa, deep in his set when a visibly excited fan evades security and leaps into the DJ booth. With a drink in one hand and confidence in the other, she leans in toward Phori's face, seemingly going in for a kiss. Startled, Maphorisa instinctively flinches and moves to the edge of the booth. Security quickly intervenes, gently escorting the woman from the stage without incident. Netizens were divided Some believed Maphorisa handled the situation appropriately, while others accused him of coldness. Comparisons were quickly drawn between Phori and his protégé, Scotts Maphuma, who recently faced backlash for allegedly mistreating fans. 'What DJ Maphorisa did was wrong. He's got the same attitude as that Scotts Maphuma guy. The woman was showing him love — he should have returned the favour by kissing her on the cheek,' wrote one X user. ALSO READ: Tyla thrilled to host Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2025 But many pushed back 'There is nothing wrong with what he did. If tables were turned, he was gonna be called all sorts of names.' 'Why is it right for female fans to go on stage and kiss DJs, but it's wrong when men try to kiss Lamiez Holworthy or Makhadzi?' Some went further, warning that public rejection could have lasting effects: 'What DJ Maphorisa did to her can't be undone. Depression loading…' The moment has brought up bigger questions around celebrity-fan interactions, entitlement, and safety on stage. Maphorisa, who is no stranger to controversy, has not publicly addressed the incident yet, but his track record suggests he might take to Instagram Live soon. Just last week, in the wake of Scotts Maphuma's online apology, Phori ranted about how podcasts fuel 'salacious drama' that damages artists' reputations. Di Podcast Di faka up Di bag tsa rona shame 💔 I wish they knew Di damages they causing Emotionally n Financially Mara Fede 🙏🏿 — PorryMaduMoneyDoubleTrouble (@DjMaphorisa) May 8, 2025 Known for being outspoken and unfiltered, DJ Maphorisa has often used his platform to call out trends he disapproves of, ranging from media manipulation to industry exploitation. Whether or not he speaks up on this particular matter, fans and critics are watching closely. Meanwhile, with a major show at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria coming up, where he'll share the stage with Kabza De Small, the producer may need to reassess his security setup. This kiss attempt, while seemingly harmless, has raised alarm bells about access, safety, and the thin line between fan adoration and invasion. As Twitter debates rage on, one thing's for sure: being a superstar in South Africa means dodging more than just bad press. Sometimes, you've got to dodge kisses, too.
