Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre
(NRC), set up at RPG Mother and Child Hospital, Shaheed Path campus, is designed to provide treatment, family education and research-based interventions for children suffering from
Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)
.
The centre includes specialised clinical wards, a therapeutic kitchen, counselling rooms and a play area for children. It is intended to serve both as a treatment facility and a training and research platform for
health professionals
working in the field of child nutrition. NRC nodal officer Dr Sheetanshu Srivastava said that the centre is meant to go beyond medical treatment.
"The objective is not only to manage malnutrition but to support families through education and evidence-based care strategies," she said during a guided tour of the facility.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by officials from the health department, development partners and institutional representatives. Dr Deepti Agrawal welcomed the guests and spoke about the importance of establishing such a centre.

, Dr Amit Mehrotra and director general of family welfare, Dr Sushma Singh highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to address malnutrition among children under the age of five.
RMLIMS director Prof CM Singh described NRC as a step to strengthen institutional capacity for public health. He said that the centre reflects a commitment to clinical quality and community support.
Chief guest , mission director of National Health Mission, UP, Dr Pinky Jowel said the centre haf the potential to address long-standing gaps in the care of infants under six months of age. As a centre of excellence, the NRC is expected to support training and research in
malnutrition management
, with particular attention to newborns and high-risk infants who may not respond well to conventional treatment.

Lucknow: Neurosurgeons at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences have developed a low-cost technique for reconstructing skull defects following brain surgery. The technique uses polymethylmethacrylate, which is shaped on a single, standard skull model to make implants for patients. It is safe, effective and affordable alternative to expensive custom-made implants, biggest advantage being its extremely low cost, about Rs 170, compared to custom 3D-printed PMMA implants that cost Rs 29,000 and titanium implants costing more than Rs 41,500. The study, published in Asian Journal of Neurosurgery, focuses on problems after Retrosigmoid Suboccipital (RMSO) craniotomy—a surgery done to remove tumours from cerebellopontine angle of the brain. The research team, led by Prof D K Singh and Prof Mohammad Kaif, tested their method on 25 patients over one year. In this technique, PMMA implant is shaped on a regular PVC skull model, sterilised and then fitted into the patient's skull through surgery. Waging war on malnutrition
CHHATTISGARH : In a novel initiative, a synchronised integrated campaign, 'Chiranjeevi Raipur', has executed nutritional interventions to secure better health of malnourished mothers and their children in a conducive environment propelled by facility-based care. Sound maternal health and child well-being are cited as the foundation of a happy family. So, the plan of action directly deals with critical health issues that impair overall growth and development. The schedule is prepared for a minimum of one-month stay at the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) near Serikheri in Raipur, with the requisite solutions well in place. A survey found that in lower-income group families with undernourished mothers, children are also obviously malnourished. So, both were enrolled under the campaign to ensure the beneficiaries have access to essential support at an early stage. The mothers are exceptionally groomed under direct observation of medical practitioners and trained professionals who understand the cases and the underlying causes of malnutrition. UNICEF also recognises the interrelatedness of maternal and child health, particularly during vulnerable periods like pregnancy and early childhood. 'The key objective of 'Chiranjeevi Raipur', the first of its kind with a multifaceted approach, is to reinforce and promote good nutritional practices among the malnourished children along with their mothers', said Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. Around 100 severely malnourished children and their mothers were taken in a batch to the NRC. The mothers were educated in personal hygiene, cleanliness practices, and how to prepare a variety of healthy, balanced foods rich in essential nutrients that can alleviate vital nutritional deficiencies. 'Malnutrition in both mothers and children should remain a grave concern as it's a cycle where a mother's deficient nourishment can adversely affect the child's growth and development. Malnourished children shouldn't become a very vulnerable group. Serious malnutrition among mothers can lead to complications in health and wellness even in young children', said Gaurav Kumar Singh, Raipur collector, who conceived the programme. The malnourished women and their children are screened and selected through the nutrition tracker App of the state's Women and Child Development department through the Anganwadi centres. The App stores information regarding the weight and height of a child from 0 to 6 years of age. The acutely malnourished children who needed special focus were selected.

Of 75 districts, Noida at 72nd spot in malnutrition drive
Noida: Noida, often synonymous with luxury and high-rise living, has found itself grappling with a stark reality — a dismal performance in the state's malnutrition drive. It has ranked 72nd out of 75 districts in UP under Sambhav Abhiyan, a campaign aimed at identifying and treating malnourished children. During a review meeting of the district nutrition committee on Thursday, chief development officer (CDO) Shivakant Dwivedi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the district's performance. He issued a directive to officials, giving them 15 days to elevate Noida's ranking into the top 10. The July progress report, presented by district programme officer Tarun Verma, revealed that while the height and weight of 92% of the district's children were measured, 747 were identified as severely malnourished (SAM) and 3,427 as moderately malnourished (MAM). CDO Dwivedi emphasised the urgency of improving the district's ranking. "This performance is unacceptable. Fix the coordination issues and get the numbers right," he instructed officials. When questioned about the district's poor performance, Verma attributed it to a lack of coordination among departments. "But we've assured officials that the ranking would improve over the next 15 days," he added. The CDO also reviewed the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (maternity benefit scheme), noting that 606 women had been registered so far. Officials were directed to expand outreach and train anganwadi workers to ensure better implementation.
