PAJCCI greets new visa policy for Afghan drivers
PESHAWAR: Senior Vice President Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi has welcomed the decision of Pakistan government of introducing a one year multiple entry visa for Afghan drivers to boost cross border trade.
In a bid to enhance bilateral trade and streamline border management, Pakistan has recently announced this policy of granting Afghan drivers and transporters one-year multiple entry visas.
'The step taken by the government would help in reducing the hindrances in Pak-Afghan trade and transit trade by facilitating passage of good laden trucks between the two countries,' Zia commented.
Sarhadi who is also Executive Member Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) also made some suggestions of making the new policy more practical and long lasting. He said before this policy, the government had decided to issue TAD-1 documents for Afghan drivers, with one year validity. Initially the visa fee for TAD was set at $100, but then it later it increased creating problems for drivers and traders. He said measures should be taken to ensure implementation of a fixed fee for the new visa issuance policy and drivers should not be compelled to pay additional amounts.
He also suggested setting up a desk at Torkham border point for visa issuance and renewal for drivers and cleaners.
He recalled the issuance of ''Red Pass' by the Pakistan government in late 80's to people associated with Pak-Afghan trade who keep on travelling across the border for business purposes. Revival of Red Pass policy will also help in expediting cargo travelling procedure and timing in Pak-Afghan trade, Zia opined.
He said visiting drivers to embassies for application submission and other formalities will be time consuming and may cause delay in transportation of import-export bound goods between the two countries.

Muharram-ul-Haram: CM Maryam directs administration to ensure foolproof arrangements
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif presided over a special meeting with regard to reviewing arrangements on the eve of Muharram-ul-Haram in which important decisions were being taken. She sought an immediate emergency plan from the administration. She directed to ensure strict implementation of the code of conduct and further directed to adopt zero-tolerance for committing violations of the code of conduct. She directed to immediately arrest those found involved in spreading hateful content on the social media. She directed to ensure a complete ban on displaying banners, posters and wall-chalking throughout the province. She directed to immediately arrest those violating the ban on flying drones during Muharram-ul-Haram. She directed the Provincial Ministers, Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, RPOs and DPOs to personally oversee arrangements of Muharram-ul-Haram. She also directed all stakeholders to personally visit the scholars. The Chief Minister directed the Safe City Authority to make functional out of order cameras and further directed the Special Monitoring Unit to monitor and report on hateful content. She directed to launch mock drills of security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram and further directed to install 'sabeels' in a uniform manner for Muharram processions and gatherings. She also directed to provide refreshing drinks, lemon water and cold water bottles to the participants during Muharram processions along with identification and monitoring of 'sabeels'. It was agreed to install iron pipes for security purposes during Muharram-ul-Haram processions and gatherings. She directed to set up a sprinkling of water to protect the mourners and participants from severe affects of heat and humidity. She directed to formulate a formidable plan to protect the mourners from heatstroke. She directed to set up field hospitals and clinics on wheels along with 'Ashura' processions and further directed to issue effective traffic management plan as well as timely traffic advisories. On this occasion, she called for making arrangements to ensure timely drainage of water in case of rainfall. The Chief Minister also directed steps to activate Hotel Eye and Travel Eye and continue the combing operation along with obtaining an anti-drone system. She while addressing the meeting said that SOPs of Muharram-ul-Haram should be seen to be implemented in letter and spirit. Hanging electric wires poses big risk emergency operations should be carried out in this regard. There should be no power outage at all during 'Ashura' processions and gatherings, street lights should not be turned off either. She censured that people are still falling and dying in manholes and directed private housing societies to fix sewer covers in their respective societies and other areas as well. Patchwork is done every year on Muharram, how come potholes resurface on the procession routes again? In the context of war, Muharram-ul-Haram should be considered highly sensitive Pakistan's enemies will not let the opportunity go. She said that negative forces are unnerved over the success of the operation 'Bunyan-um-Marsoos', adding that all stakeholders must remain alert all the time. She highlighted that the Punjab government carries the impression of a service-oriented government it must be maintained and enhanced. She emphasized that arrangements should be made even better than before. She directed the cabinet members to perform their duties effectively in their relevant districts. She maintained that stakeholders should be included and informed in all important decisions. She outlined that the public should see the writ of the government prevailing everywhere in an effective manner. The Chief Minister said, 'Public committees should be made active and fully mobilized in all districts. Last year, arrangements being made on Muharram-ul-Haram were appreciated and even the Shiites acknowledged them. High standards of service delivery were set a clear difference was felt during the Eid operation. It is our first and foremost responsibility to safeguard the country and the nation from hatred, prejudice and disunity. Division and hatred are poisonous for the new generation and we want to eliminate it at all costs. There is a dire need to take effective and sustainable measures to eradicate hatred and prejudice.' She maintained, 'The state should play role of a mother and this feeling should be felt and highlighted at every level. Control rooms should be fully activated at the provincial, divisional and district levels, I will personally visit any place. We broke the record of the best arrangements being made during the last Eid, and now even better arrangements should be made for Muharram-ul-Haram. I commend all Deputy Commissioners, local governments and other departments on making excellent Eid arrangements.' PM, Chinese envoy discuss CPEC projects
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reiterated Pakistan's commitment to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), describing it as a flagship project of the longstanding strategic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing. In a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, the prime minister reiterated support for the timely implementation of key infrastructure schemes, including the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway upgrade, the Karakoram Highway expansion, and the development of Gwadar Port. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, talks also touched on broader cooperation in agriculture, industry, and information technology. 6th China-S Asia Cooperation Forum held in Kunming: Pakistan, China reaffirm commitment to high-quality development of CPEC PM Sharif conveyed greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, and expressed hopes for the successful convening of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which Pakistan is expected to attend later this year. Consultations are currently under way regarding the prime minister's planned visit to China, likely to take place in late August. The prime minister thanked Beijing for its continued financial and economic support, which he said had contributed significantly to stabilising Pakistan's economy and improving its macroeconomic indicators. Regional security was also discussed, particularly recent developments in the Iran-Israel conflict. Ambassador Jiang praised Pakistan's role in promoting dialogue and diplomacy in international forums, including the UN Security Council. Security arrangements for Muharram: ‘232,000 cops to be deployed across Punjab'
LAHORE: 'More than 232,000 officers and personnel of Punjab Police will be deployed across the province to ensure security during the first 10 days of Muharram-ul-Haram, with over 28,000 deployed in Lahore alone. Additionally, more than 91,000 community volunteers will assist with the security of Majalis and mourning processions.' This was revealed by Additional IG Operations Punjab Shahzada Sultan during a high-level meeting chaired by Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr Usman Anwar, to review and finalise security arrangements for Muharram. According to the Punjab Police, over 38,000 Majalis and more than 9,200 mourning processions are scheduled across the province during the first 10 days of Muharram. The IG Punjab emphasized that the current regional situation makes this year's security responsibilities particularly sensitive and challenging. 'Anti-state elements may attempt to disrupt national security and peace through terrorism or sectarian violence,' Dr Usman Anwar warned, directing all officers to implement security SOPs strictly and to neutralize any attempt to disturb law and order. He urged district police to proactively resolve any sectarian flashpoints through consultation with stakeholders before Muharram begins. The IG ordered that all operational, logistical, transport, human rights, anti-riot, and traffic arrangements be completed promptly. He further instructed the RPOs and DPOs to coordinate closely with peace committees, religious scholars from all sects, and organizers of processions and Majalis. Senior officers have been tasked with personally inspecting security arrangements at procession routes and Imambargahs. In coordination with district administrations, the Punjab Police will also ensure road patchwork, streetlight functionality, and removal of encroachments along procession routes. The police will be supported by the Pakistan Army, Rangers, and other security institutions during this critical period. The meeting was attended by DIG Operations Punjab Waqas Nazir, AIG Operations, AIG Logistics, and DPO Hafizabad, while RPOs, CPOs, and DPOs from other districts joined via video link.
