Indian Government Assures Ministry of Foreign Affairs Regarding Liberian Students
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assures the public that at the moment, there is no immediate threat to the lives and safety of Liberian students residing in India as a direct consequence of the India-Pakistan conflict. The announcement comes as tensions between India and Pakistan erupted in the Kashmir region, earlier this week. In bilateral talks with the Embassy of the Republic of India in Monrovia, while seeking the welfare of Liberians in India, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received assurances that no known member of the Liberian community in India works, studies, or resides anywhere near the region affected by the reported conflict. The Ministry has also engaged the President of the Association of Liberian Students in India, who confirmed that Liberians are not currently in harm's way, but to ensure a first hand analysis, the Ministry will dispatch a delegation to India to assess the security and welfare of Liberian citizens.
In the meantime, consultations that commenced in 2024 regarding establishing diplomatic presence in New Delhi continues between the Republic of Liberia and the Republic of India. In other developments, the Foreign Ministry is also working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the Liberians stranded at the border of Myanmar and Thailand. The Ministry with support of the Liberian Embassy in Beijing is working with the International Organization on Migration (IOM) to secure their entry into Thailand and subsequent repatriation. As it relates to the reports of a Liberian student stranded in Ukraine, the Ministry has been engaging the family as well as the Ukrainian authorities, and the Ministry is taking necessary steps in line with international protocols. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms to the public its commitment to its mandate to seek the welfare of all Liberians abroad.

India's Modi to visit Kashmir to unveil strategic railway
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to make his first visit to contested Kashmir since a conflict between India and Pakistan last month, inaugurating a strategic railway to the mountainous region, his office said on Wednesday. Modi is set to visit on Friday to open the Chenab Bridge, a 1,315-metre-long steel and concrete span that connects two mountains with an arch 359 metres above the river below. "The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement. Modi is expected to flag off a special train. The 272-kilometre Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway -- with 36 tunnels and 943 bridges — has been constructed "aiming to transform regional mobility and driving socio-economic integration", the statement added. Its dramatic centrepiece is the Chenab Bridge, which India calls the "world's highest railway arch bridge". While several road and pipeline bridges are higher, Guinness World Records confirmed that Chenab trumps the previous highest railway bridge, the Najiehe in China. Indian Railways calls the $24-million bridge "arguably the biggest civil engineering challenge faced by any railway project in India in recent history". The bridge will facilitate the movement of people and goods -- as well as troops -- that was previously possible only via treacherous mountain roads and air. The train line could slash travel time between the town of Katra and Srinagar, the region's key city, by half, taking around three hours. The bridge will also revolutionise logistics in Ladakh, the icy region in India bordering China. India and China, the world's two most populous nations, are intense rivals competing for strategic influence across South Asia. Their troops clashed in 2020, killing at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers, and forces from both sides today face off across contested high-altitude borderlands. The railway begins in the garrison city of Udhampur, headquarters of the army's northern command, and runs north to Srinagar.

Don't 'politicise' stampede incident, says BCCI VP Shukla
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice president and Congress MP Rajeev Shukla believes the ruling party, Congress, "should not be blamed" for the stampede that broke out outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL winning celebrations on Wednesday. After the stampede incident, Karnataka Legislative Council member, BK Hariprasad, said that 11 people, including a woman, died in the stampede during the event. Shukla feels the stampede outside the stadium should not be "politicised" and revealed he spoke to the franchise. According to Shukla, RCB didn't expect such a huge crowd to attend the celebrations. He also assured that efforts are being made to provide maximum help to the families of the deceased. "This can happen in any state, and the ruling party should not be blamed for it. It should not be politicised. If this happens in a BJP-ruled state, we should not blame them. The crowd was huge. I spoke to the franchise, and they also did not think that such a huge crowd would come, and this incident happened suddenly. Efforts are being made to provide maximum help to the families of the deceased," Shukla told reporters. "The government did stop the roadshow in order to avoid a stampede or any such situation. But it was not anticipated that a stampede would happen outside the stadium. Everybody should work together on the damage control," he added. Opposition parties in the state, including the Janata Dal (Secular), have squarely blamed the Congress-led state government for what they describe as a complete failure of planning and public safety. Union Minister of Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy said the primary reason for this "massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures". Kumaraswamy, a former Karnataka Chief Minister, said the state's Congress government must take full responsibility for this disaster. "The tragic incident of a stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB victory celebrations, resulting in the unfortunate death of people, has left me deeply shocked. It is extremely painful to see innocent lives lost even before the celebrations could begin," he said.
