New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year
The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years.
They decided to fire Thibodeau despite that and eventually picked Brown, who wasn't out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season.
Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023 — their first appearance since 2006 — and was voted the Coach of the Year. He also won the award in Cleveland, where he led the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals.

Starc takes 6 wickets for 9 runs as West Indies routed for 27 in Kingston
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Mitchell Starc took six wickets for nine runs, surpassing 400 test wickets in his 100th test, and Scott Boland claimed a hat trick as Australia bowled out the West Indies for 27 to win the third test by 176 runs on Monday, The West Indies missed the lowest score in test cricket by one run. Starc's first 15 balls delivered the fastest five-wicket haul in test history, and his 15th five-wicket bag in tests. The tall left-armer took a wicket with the first ball and three wickets in the first over of the West Indies innings at Sabina Park. Australia took only 14.3 overs to rout the home side in the first day-night test in Kingston and complete a 3-0 series sweep. 'It's been a fantastic series. I think we've seen some difficult batting conditions throughout,' Starc said. 'It's been a good few days, very enjoyable and I'll go home with a smile on my face. 'We saw last night the conditions with the hard pink ball under lights. It's pretty difficult. We didn't think it would happen as quickly today, until the sun went down a bit.' The match was the first day-night test in the Caribbean. Australia's bowlers dominated the series after winning the first two tests — by 159 runs in Barbados then by 133 runs in Grenada — to secure the Frank Worrell Trophy. While Starc missed a hat trick after dismissing Kevlon Anderson and Brandon King with consecutive deliveries, Boland completed his with the wickets of Justin Greaves, Shamar Joseph and Jomel Warrican. It was the 10th test hat trick by an Australian. Boland finished with three wickets for two runs. The West Indies was out for its lowest test score, eclipsing the 47 against England on the same ground in 2004. At 11-6 in the sixth over it was in danger of inheriting the lowest score in test history. A misfield by Sam Konstas in the 14th over allowed the West Indies to take a single and reach 27, just avoiding New Zealand's 70-year-old record of 26 set against England. Earlier, Alzarri Joseph took 5-27 as the West Indies bowled out Australia for 121 in its second innings, leaving a chase of 204 runs for victory. Australia began the third day at 99-6 but lasted only eight more overs. Cameron Green, who battled hard on Day 2 to reach 42, was out to the first ball of the day and the rest of the Australia tail followed quickly. When the West Indies replied, Starc produced an outstanding display of fast bowling on a responsive pitch. His first ball of the second innings, he compelled opener John Campbell to play defensive at a ball which moved away and he was caught by substitute wicketkeeper Josh Inglis. Inglis kept in place of Alex Carey, who was struck on the helmet by Alzarri Joseph on the second day. Starc then removed Anderson lbw, bowled King without scoring and Mikyle Lewis for 4, leaving the West Indies four wickets down for five runs. His fifth wicket was Shai Hope, trapped lbw by a ball that swung in at pace to hit the back pad. When Josh Hazlewood dismissed captain Roston Chase, caught by Inglis without scoring, the West Indies was 11-6. Taking out extras, the top six West Indies batters collectively scored only six runs. The West Indies was 22-6 at the dinner break. Shortly after it passed 26, helped by two dropped catches in the slips by Sam Konstas off Starc. Dave Roberts defends Jacob Misiorowski's All-Star selection as an ‘easy answer'
ATLANTA (AP) — National League All-Star manager Dave Roberts said including Milwaukee rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski on his team was 'an easy answer' despite complaints from some players over his inclusion after just five big league appearances. 'If it brings excitement, attention to our game, then I'm all about it,' Roberts said before Monday's Home Run Derby. 'I think for me, kind of my North Star is the All-Star Game should be the game's best players,' the Los Angeles Dodgers manager added before also addressing the other side of the argument by adding 'It's about the fans and what the fans want to see.' Misiorowski has pitched in only five games, a record low for an All-Star, creating a debate between those who say the game is for the most deserving players and those who say the game is for the fans. The 23-year-old created an instant stir when he threw a 100.5 mph fastball for his first pitch in the big leagues. Oh, and for good measure, he opened that debut on June 12 against St. Louis by throwing five no-hit innings before leaving with cramping in the Brewers' 6-0 win. The 6-foot-7 rookie is 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA and has 33 strikeouts with only 12 hits allowed in 25 2/3 innings. It's an impressive debut, but some players still believe the right-hander hasn't been in the game long enough to merit All-Star consideration over more established players. Philadelphia's Trea Turner was outspoken in his criticism of the decision to add Misiorowski to the team when Phillies' left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, who is 8-2 with a 2.50 ERA, didn't make the team. The Phillies also lobbied for left-hander Ranger Suárez (7-3, 1.94). 'What a joke,' Turner told reporters. Misiorowski said Monday he wasn't offended. 'They're not upset with me,' he said, adding he is as surprised as anyone to find himself in Atlanta for Tuesday night's game. 'The last five weeks have been insane,' Misiorowski said. 'I thought the All-Star break would be a chance to sit down and reflect. Now we're here.' Turner's teammate, All-Star Kyle Schwarber, said Monday the attempt by Phillies players to speak up for Sánchez and Suárez 'was not an attack at Misiorowski by any means. It's an honor for him that he's here and it should be an honor for him. It's not his fault that he's only pitched five games and he got named.' Schwarber said Misiorowski could be an All-Star 'every year that he pitches. It's just more of the fact of our guys were having some really good years and some pretty good every day starts and numbers. You want them to feel like they're gonna get represented the way that they should be.' Schwarber added that he would likely talk to Misiorowski during All-Star week and would tell him 'he's doing a great job at what he's doing and he's going to be a perennial All-Star for years to come.' Roberts said he plans to bring Misiorowski into the game as early as the fifth inning. 'And it's going to be electric,' Roberts said. 'So the fans, the media, you're going to love it.' QB Diego Pavia back for Vanderbilt amid battle with NCAA that could reshape eligibility rules
ATLANTA (AP) — One way or another, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia might have changed college sports forever last fall. Pavia led Vanderbilt to a 7-6 season on the field highlighted by an upset victory over No. 1 Alabama, but his lasting contribution came in court. The New Mexico State transfer started his career with two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute, a junior college. Under normal circumstances, his collegiate eligibility would have expired after last year. The 2020 season — his first — did not count against eligibility for any athletes due to COVID-19, giving him the four years he ended up playing between one more at the institute, two at New Mexico State and one at Vanderbilt. Last November, Pavia filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, arguing that his JUCO years should not count against his NCAA eligibility, citing the potential losses in earnings from name, image and likeness deals. U.S. District Judge William Campbell Jr. in Tennessee granted a preliminary injunction, ordering the NCAA to allow Pavia to play. The NCAA is appealing Campbell's decision but granted a blanket waiver that will allow Pavia and other athletes who played at non-NCAA Division I schools prior to enrollment an extra year of eligibility if they were going to exhaust their eligibility this year. Pavia is back and ready to lead the Commodores again in 2025. 'I'm just grateful to have him for another year and spend more time with him,' Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea said at SEC Media Days on Monday. College football eligibility could be completely different moving forward in light of Pavia's lawsuit. Others have followed with lawsuits of their own, and alterations to NCAA eligibility remain one of many issues still evolving in college sports. Pavia is well aware his impact went far beyond just winning games, though. 'I have a lot of teammates, ex-teammates from New Mexico Military Institute who I played with who text me and say, 'Hey, thank you.' A lot of people reach out,' he said. 'It wasn't really me, it was my lawyer who did it.' Pavia said he supports 'a five-for-five kind of deal,' where college athletes would start with five years of eligibility to be completed in a five-year time period, eliminating the use of redshirts or medical waivers to extend a traditional four-year eligibility clock. Whether he gets his wish remains to be seen, but he already won one battle by earning the right to play in 2025. Vanderbilt ended last season with a win over Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl, its first bowl victory since 2013 and the exclamation point on improvement from a 2-10 season in 2023. Pavia gives Vanderbilt an opportunity to sustain momentum from last year's breakthrough campaign. 'I'm in a super blessed position,' Pavia said.
