Viral TikTok videos claimed there was a mass kidnapping event in Virginia
State police say the claims are not true and that they were not investigating such an event
The agency noted that the number of children reported missing in the state was down from the weekly average that week
After multiple social media posts stoked viral fears children were being abducted across Virginia, state police said the rumors were not true.
"Virginia State Police is aware of multiple social media posts raising concerns about missing children across the Commonwealth of Virginia," the agency said. "Virginia State Police is not investigating any reports of mass abductions in Virginia, nor is there evidence of mass abductions occurring in Virginia."
13NewsNow reported that TikTok videos erroneously claimed that there was a "mass kidnapping" in Virginia.
The TikTok frenzy has drawn comparisons to the 2025 horror movie Weapons, in which children go missing, sparking widespread panic and violent chaos.
State police further explained that Virginia reports more missing children on the website for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Kids than any other state.
"According to NCMEC, Virginia is the most proactive in sending cases to their website," state police said in a statement. The agency provided additional context about the number of missing children in Virginia, noting that 88 children were reported missing during the week of Aug. 3 to Aug. 9, the week many of the posts popped up.
Virginia State Police said the total missing children reported that week was down from the 2025 weekly average of 98.
Since the beginning of the year, 3,274 children have been reported missing — the majority of whom are runaways — and only 4% remain missing, according to state police.
Only two AMBER Alerts have been issued by Virginia State Police in 2025, and both children were found.

Video shows Colombian TikToker Tatiana Martinez yanked from car during ICE arrest

A video posted on social media showed immigration agents yanking Colombian TikToker Tatiana Martinez from her vehicle during an arrest last week. Martinez was detained on Friday in Los Angeles while sitting inside her Tesla. She was streaming on TikTok when federal agents approached her vehicle, according to Newsweek. Footage shows three agents pull Martinez, whose real name is Leidy Tatiana Mafla-Martinez, out of the car and place her facedown on the ground as she screams. In another video, a person yells for someone to call 911 as Martinez lies motionless on the ground. Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement that Martinez was detained because of a prior conviction of driving under the influence in Los Angeles. McLaughlin said Martinez came to the United States in 2022 and "was RELEASED by the Biden administration." "Under President Trump and @Sec_Noem, if you break the law, you will face the consequences," Homeland Security said in a post on X. The agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the social media videos. During her arrest, Martinez complained about shortness of breath and was given medical treatment, McLaughlin said, and is being held at a facility in Calexico, California. It's not clear if she has obtained an attorney. Martinez gained followers on TikTok after posting videos documenting the ICE raids under President Donald Trump's push for mass deportations, Newsweek reported. She also shared guidance on what people should do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement stop them. McLaughlin said that as agents were detaining Martinez, another person "unlawfully towed a government police vehicle." "He mocked and videotaped ICE officers chasing after him. Secretary [Kristi] Noem has been clear: Anyone who seeks to impede law enforcement will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," McLaughlin said.

The New Yorker Who Interviews Doormen on TikTok

Today we'll look at a TikTok video creator who has interviewed more than 100 doormen. We'll also get details on why Mayor Eric Adams is demanding that federal agents stop making arrests at immigration courts in New York City. Sara Leeds doesn't always get the interview she wants. There was the time she went to a building on the Upper East Side, trailed by her videographer, and asked the doorman if he wanted to appear on camera. The answer was no. The building has its rules. 'I'm walking away,' Leeds said, 'and the doorman calls back to me. He's like, 'Wait, wait, come back.' So I walk over, and he goes: 'My superintendent can see you on the security camera. And he wanted to say, Thank you so much for what you're doing.'' What she does, when the supers or the co-op board bosses don't say no, is interview doormen on TikTok. She has posted hundreds of videos in the last couple of years — fast-moving conversations with the protectors and problem-solvers of daily life for people in thousands of buildings. She has 5.8 million likes on TikTok and 200,000 followers across different platforms. Doormen are 'quintessentially New York,' as the sociologist Peter Bearman observed in a 2005 book: 'a critical element' of some New Yorkers' 'sense of self and place.' Leeds says that doormen are gatekeepers to the outside world and confidants to the inner world of the buildings where they work — as well as quartermasters. 'The Amazon Primes of the world have made the job physically taxing,' Leeds said. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Yarely Hermosillo / Facebook 'My question still is, why would you just randomly shoot the other way? He obviously didn't know the other car was there,' Glendale Police Sergeant Brian Hoskins told the local outlet. 'That's the thing, as gun owners, you have to know where you're shooting, what you're pointing at. You know, those are the responsibilities of being a responsible gun owner. You can't just fire rounds randomly throughout. Specifically, a high, highly populated city.' Hoskins added that Dousten was identified as the owner of the vehicle involved in the shooting. After cops obtained a warrant to search his apartment, two handguns were discovered and Dousten was arrested. 4 Glendale police have arrested Dousten, 33, on several charges including second-degree murder in connection with Hermosillo's death.
