Alaska plane crash updates: No survivors after missing plane found outside of Nome

Independent08-02-2025

A plane carrying 10 people that disappeared mid-flight in rural Alaska during a dangerous winter storm has been found, alongside three bodies, authorities have confirmed.
On Friday, shortly after 2 p.m. local time the U.S. Coast Guard announced the aircraft had been found approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome in the west of the state, and that there were no survivors of the crash.
'Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident,' the USCG said.
Authorities previously said Bering Air Flight 455 suffered 'some kind of event' before that caused it to 'rapidly lose altitude and speed.'
Authorities had been scouring the ground for survivors in 'zero visibility conditions,' while warning the public against embarking on private rescue missions since the aircraft was reported missing just before 4 p.m. local time on Thursday.
The plane took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. before losing contact with the air traffic control tower less than an hour later, according to Bering Air's director of operations, David Olson. It was about 12 miles offshore flying over the Norton Sound – about 10 minutes before its scheduled arrival in Nome.
All missings have been presumed dead and all families of passengers have been notified, the fire department said Friday.
Unspecified 'event' caused missing aircraft to drop off radars
An unspecified 'event' caused the Bering Air Flight 445 to drop off the radars, officials have said.
Coast Guard Luitenant Commander Ben McIntyre-Coble said on Friday that 'some kind of event' caused the aircraft to 'rapidly lose altitude and speed.'
He said he could not comment on the nature of the event, and added that investigations are ongoing.

Three aviation incidents in 8 days
The U.S. skies have seen multiple aviation incidents since late January.
On January 29, a military helicopter collided with an American Airlines jet, killing all 67 people on board both aircrafts.
Days later, a medical jet carrying a young girl, her mother and four crew members crashed down in northeast Philadelphia, claiming all the lives on board.
Now, the plane flying 10 people to Nome, Alaska has disappeared during a winter storm. Officials are now in a race against time to find the nine passengers and pilot.

Is it still safe to fly?
Nine passengers and a pilot are missing after Bering Air flight 445 vanished in the rural western region of Nome in Alaska.
The missing plane marks the third major air incident involving US personnel in 10 days.
A mid-air collision between an American Airlines jet and a US military Black Hawk helicopter in Washington DC took the lives of 67 passengers on Wednesday 29 January.
Two days later, a medical jet crashed in Northeast Philadelphia, killing seven people, including all six passengers on board.

More info A woman was airlifted to hospital after suffering a "suspected broken ankle" on the Little Orme, Llandudno. Two Coastguard rescue teams and a Coastguard rescue helicopter was called to the scene at around 5pm yesterday (Tuesday). The casualty was secured and taken on board the aircraft before being flown to hospital. The incident was concluded by 8.10pm. A Llandudno Coastguard Helicopter "We were called out at about 5pm, together with our colleagues from @bangorcoastguard, to someone with an injured ankle near to the summit of the Little Orme. "We quickly found the casualty who had sustained a suspected broken ankle and was in a lot of pain. We were able to splint the casualty's leg and keep her warm and comfortable. "The location was on a very steep, very uneven slope which could have made a dangerous and lengthy casualty extraction. Therefore we called for some assistance from the Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 936. "The helicopter was able to land nearby and the helicopter paramedic issued some pain relief to the casualty. We then carried the casualty on our stretcher to the helicopter who took her to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor for further treatment. "If you are ever aware of anyone in danger or distress anywhere around the coast please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard." A Coastguard spokesperson said: "North Wales Police called us to the incident at 5pm and requested a cliff rescue team. We sent two teams from Llandudno and Bangor. A Coastguard rescue helicopter was also sent. The person had suffered an injured ankle and was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd." Coast Guard suspends search for plane that crashed into the ocean off San Diego and killed 6

The Coast Guard suspended the search Tuesday for the wreckage of a small plane that crashed into the ocean shortly after taking off from San Diego, killing all six people aboard. The National Transportation Safety Board said it will continue working to determine why the Cessna 414 crashed Sunday, but it doesn't expect to have any updates on the crash until it publishes its preliminary report about a month from now. With the wreckage still resting under a couple hundred feet of water, the NTSB's investigator isn't even immediately travelling to where the plane crashed about 3 miles (about 5 kilometers) off the coast of Point Loma, a San Diego neighborhood that juts into the Pacific. Authorities have not identified the people who died in the crash. The plane was scheduled to return to Arizona on Sunday — one day after it flew out to San Diego. A natural supplements company called Optimal Health Systems based in Pima, Arizona, said it sold the plane in 2023 to a group of individuals who are part of their small community. Air traffic controllers quickly became concerned about the plane after it failed to climb over 1,000 feet or turn back east after taking off. The pilot reported having trouble climbing and maintaining his heading before repeatedly calling out 'Mayday' before the plane disappeared from radar. This crash came just weeks after a small Cessna crashed into a San Diego neighborhood in foggy weather and killed six people. Those two are just the latest in a string of deadly crashes, mishaps and near misses in aviation this year ever since an airliner collided with an Army helicopter over Washington, D.C., in January, killing 67 people.

Kerala: Four crew members missing as Singapore cargo ship burns off India coast

India's Coast Guard is continuing efforts to douse a fire on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship in the Arabian Sea near the coast of the southern state of Wan Hai 503, which was heading to India's Mumbai city from Sri Lanka's Colombo, reported an internal container explosion on Monday, resulting in a major fire on crew members have been rescued, while four are still missing. Singapore has sent a team to assist in the rescue Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued an alert for the coast of Kerala due to potential oil spill and debris from the ship . Footage on Tuesday showed MV Wan Hai 503 emitting large plumes of smoke as the Indian Navy and Coast Guard tried to extinguish the fire Coast Guard said fires and explosions continued to be seen on the a search and rescue operation carried out on Monday, 18 of the ship's 22 crew members were rescued and brought ashore where some of them are being treated for crew members had abandoned the ship when the fire broke out and left on a boat after which they were rescued by the Navy, India's defence ministry Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said four crew members are still missing - two of them are from Taiwan, one from Myanmar and one from Indonesia. The MPA said that it has sent a team to help with the Ports Minister VN Vasavan said that 50 containers from the ship had fallen into the ship was carrying 100 tonnes of bunker oil, Mathrubhumi News reported. Containers that fell from it were drifting along the coast of Kerala, INCOIS told Manorama News, and could drift towards its coastline in the next three days. This is the second such incident in three weeks near the Kerala coast. Last month, a Liberian-flagged vessel carrying oil and hazardous cargo leaked and sank in the Arabian Sea, sparking fears that harmful substances could endanger the health of residents and marine state government then banned fishing within a 20-nautical mile radius of the shipwreck and announced compensation for families from fishing communities in four affected districts. Kerala's coastal stretch is rich in biodiversity and the state is also an important tourist destination. Follow BBC News India on Instagram, YouTube, X and Facebook.
