Kerala: Four crew members missing as Singapore cargo ship burns off India coast
India's Coast Guard is continuing efforts to douse a fire on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship in the Arabian Sea near the coast of the southern state of Kerala.MV Wan Hai 503, which was heading to India's Mumbai city from Sri Lanka's Colombo, reported an internal container explosion on Monday, resulting in a major fire on board.Eighteen crew members have been rescued, while four are still missing. Singapore has sent a team to assist in the rescue efforts.The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued an alert for the coast of Kerala due to potential oil spill and debris from the ship .
Footage on Tuesday showed MV Wan Hai 503 emitting large plumes of smoke as the Indian Navy and Coast Guard tried to extinguish the fire onboard.The Coast Guard said fires and explosions continued to be seen on the ship.In a search and rescue operation carried out on Monday, 18 of the ship's 22 crew members were rescued and brought ashore where some of them are being treated for injuries.The crew members had abandoned the ship when the fire broke out and left on a boat after which they were rescued by the Navy, India's defence ministry said.The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said four crew members are still missing - two of them are from Taiwan, one from Myanmar and one from Indonesia. The MPA said that it has sent a team to help with the rescue.Kerala Ports Minister VN Vasavan said that 50 containers from the ship had fallen into the sea.The ship was carrying 100 tonnes of bunker oil, Mathrubhumi News reported. Containers that fell from it were drifting along the coast of Kerala, INCOIS told Manorama News, and could drift towards its coastline in the next three days. This is the second such incident in three weeks near the Kerala coast. Last month, a Liberian-flagged vessel carrying oil and hazardous cargo leaked and sank in the Arabian Sea, sparking fears that harmful substances could endanger the health of residents and marine life.The state government then banned fishing within a 20-nautical mile radius of the shipwreck and announced compensation for families from fishing communities in four affected districts. The Coast Guard suspended the search Tuesday for the wreckage of a small plane that crashed into the ocean shortly after taking off from San Diego, killing all six people aboard. Air traffic controllers quickly became concerned about the plane after it failed to climb over 1,000 feet or turn back east after taking off. The pilot reported having trouble climbing and maintaining his heading before repeatedly calling out 'Mayday' before the plane disappeared from radar. This crash came just weeks after a small Cessna crashed into a San Diego neighborhood in foggy weather and killed six people. Those two are just the latest in a string of deadly crashes, mishaps and near misses in aviation this year ever since an airliner collided with an Army helicopter over Washington, D.C., in January, killing 67 people.

Grand Central shuts down as fire sparks massive emergency response
Three people have been injured in a fire at New York City's Grand Central Station, as the blaze sparked a huge emergency response during morning rush hour. FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said two firefighters and one civilian were treated for 'non life-threatening injuries' after an inferno broke out in the iconic station's basement at around 8.15am on Tuesday. 'It took several hours and about a hundred or more firefighters to locate an electrical fire in the deep basement along the 300-level tracks of the Long Island Rail Road,' Tucker told a press conference at midday. He said firefighters battled through 'heavy smoke' and the blaze has now been extinguished. It's unclear what the electrical fault was which caused the fire. It sparked widespread travel chaos as several train lines were suspended and roads surrounding Manhattan's 42nd Street and Park Avenue were closed off. The MTA's Long Island Rail Road X account said several branches have been diverted from Grand Central to Atlantic Terminal due to the blaze. More than 750,000 people travel through Grand Central Terminal each day, and the vaulted marble station is also a major tourist attraction. Seven New York City subway lines pass through Grand Central via 67 tracks and 44 platforms, along with three Metro-North railroad lines and the LIRR. The FDNY shared photographs of firefighters gathering on one platform, and of responders using a flashlight to peer down a tunnel at a stopped train. Tucker said firefighters were confronted by lashing flames and 'zero visibility'. He praised the response and said he was grateful that no one had been severely hurt. 'NYC Emergency Management and FDNY remain on site, and ventilation fans are in operation to clear smoke,' NYUC Emergency Management said. 'The situation is developing, and further changes to service may occur as emergency response continues.' According to the LIRR, eight branches have been re-routed or suspended.
