Family says lightning strike that disabled car on Illinois highway sounded like a ‘loud gunshot'
According to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the eastbound lane of Illinois Route 13 near Illinois Route 166 and found the three people standing outside of the vehicle.
The three were traveling when the Ford Edge SUV suffered a direct lightning strike, which disabled the car's electrical system, exploded the rear bumper and exhaust system, and scattered debris over the roadway.
Police said a visible hole was seen in the roof of the car.
No one was injured, and the vehicle was towed from the scene, police said.
