'A funny joke could kill me but no one takes my common condition seriously'
Asthma affects millions of people in the UK, yet many underestimate the devastating impact it can have on people like Tiffanni Fennell, who has shared the harsh reality
Most of us would never imagine that something as innocent as a joke or the whiff of perfume could put our lives at risk. But for 27-year-old Tiffanni Fennell, those are the things she has to consider every single day.
From the outside, she looks like any other young woman - healthy, full of life. But living with severe asthma has made her feel invisible, as strangers don't appreciate just how dangerous her condition truly is. Asthma affects 7.2 million people in the UK - but only 4% have the severe form that Tiffanni lives with, according to Asthma + Lung UK.
Just last week, she had an asthma attack in the middle of her local Co-Op store because her bags were heavy, and her chest suddenly felt tight. "I had to sit down in the middle of an aisle as I was struggling to breathe," she told the Mirror. "Nobody stopped, and people just walked around me."
An incident that still haunts her is the time she was in a car with her boyfriend Adam, 27, and he cracked a joke. 'I was laughing so much that I started to struggle for breath, and Adam instantly turned the car round and sped towards the hospital,' she recalled.
'I never really know what will trigger the next asthma attack, or whether I'll survive.' Since childhood, Tiffanni's life has consisted of constant hospital visits and terrifying asthma attacks.
Tiffanni, a salon assistant from Jersey, started with breathing issues at the age of five, when a bout of pneumonia left her hospitalised with fluid on her lungs. 'I remember Mum camping out in the hospital next to me and squeezing my hand as I struggled to suck air into my chest," she said.
"It must have been terrifying for my family, and I honestly don't think they've relaxed since.' But her trauma didn't stop there - she contracted pneumonia again at 19 and wasn't expected to survive.
Living in Jersey also means she has to travel all the way to Southampton just to receive specialist care, though it's not only the travelling which contributes to the stress of her condition. But her symptoms are often dismissed by people, even the doctors she goes to for help. 'A hospital clinician told me I was anxious in the middle of a nasty asthma attack,' she claimed. 'I collapsed shortly after.'
Tiffanni is sharing what life is really like with the condition this World Asthma Day, shining a light on 'what it's really like to permanently have your life on mute. As asthma is so common, people have no idea how dangerous and limiting it can be.'
She is grateful for a loving partner, whom she met at a friend's party in 2018. Adam supports her through the unpredictable changes asthma brings, but the condition has stolen many of her dreams.
Tiffanni had hoped to become a hairdresser, but worries she'd constantly be letting clients down due to her frequent absences. 'I dream about buying a house, having babies, and going on sun-kissed holidays on Greek islands,' she says. 'My life goals feel hollow because travel and childbirth could put too much pressure on my lungs, and a physically demanding career is a definite no-no.'
For the past five years, she's been taking Biologics - a targeted therapy for severe asthma that reduces inflammation in the lungs. While many see it as a game changer, the results have been different for her, despite fewer hospital visits.
'I've been told that I probably won't live a long life, and I'd like to say that I'm OK with that, but the truth is I'm really not,' she says. 'But I do know that I am doing everything I can to stay well. I manage my condition with an asthma action plan and regular reviews and inhaler checks.'
Asthma + Lung UK reports that only a third of people with asthma are managing their asthma properly. This means having a yearly review, regular inhaler checks and a clear action plan.
Like so many other people living with breathing difficulties, Tiffanni wants to see lung health taken seriously - with more money invested into life-saving respiratory treatments, and better care. 'Being able to breathe shouldn't be a privilege,' she says. 'It should be an absolute right.'

Dog owner claims 89p-a-day natural food 'improved condition 100%' after vet's dire warning
The Pure Pet Food subscription box has a range of different flavours and vet-approved recipes packed with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients - and it's currently on offer Dog owners are turning to a natural food delivery service to help their pets get fit for summer, with some even claiming it's saved their dogs' lives. While recipe boxes like Hello Fresh and Gousto have long been popular among humans wanting to eat healthily, the new service from Pure Pet Food allows four-legged friends to receive their own customised menus delivered straight to their door. Customers who've already tried the service have hailed it as a 'game changer' for their pups. And the brand is currently offering a 40% off introductory deal for those thinking about trying it. The Pure Pet Food subscription box offers a variety of flavours and vet-approved recipes filled with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients, making it ideal for dogs suffering from food intolerances. Owners simply add water and stir to rehydrate the food, with some customers even using a bit of warm water to serve their furry friend a hot meal. The plan is delivered free of charge and starts from just 89p a day for a fully personalised menu based on the pet's age, weight and any health conditions. Currently, shoppers can save 40% on their first box and 15% off the next two. The ingredients are so natural that when the brand appeared on Dragon's Den, one of the company's owners impressed two of the Dragons by eating one of the recipes himself, reports the Mirror. Elsewhere, Marleybones is offering new customers 30% off their trial selection boxes, with Butternut Box dishing out 25% off owners' first two boxes in similar subscription services. Thousands of pet owners have already made the switch to this brand, with many reporting a significant improvement in their dogs' overall health and wellbeing. The food has been credited with helping to alleviate a range of issues, from skin conditions to digestive problems. With an impressive 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot based on over 11,000 customer reviews, it's clear that this brand is making a real difference in the lives of dogs and their owners. Some customers have even gone so far as to say that the food has saved their dog's life. One reviewer shared a remarkable story of how the food helped to turn her 15 year old dog's health around. Despite being told by vets that her dog likely had cancer and that the prognosis was bleak, she started feeding him this brand and saw a dramatic improvement in his condition. She believes that the food has helped to manage her dog's gastrointestinal issues and has given him a new lease on life. She explained: "We have been on a roller coaster with Muttley since January this year, and at 15 years, I thought we were losing him. Scans, bloods, more scans and finally told that he must have cancer, but the vets didn't know where. I was advised to keep him comfortable and expect the worst soon. In fact, they would have happily put him to sleep at this time, as they said he looked worse. "Started him on Pure and have not looked back. I feel it's IBS or some similar gastrointestinal issue, not cancer at all, and when he's poorly, it's a flare-up. The vet wouldn't listen to me regarding this at all. Overall, his condition has improved 100%. "He still has occasional flare-ups, but nothing we can't manage. Many people have remarked on how well 'and younger' he looks. He plays with his toys again and goes for walks, all of which have pretty much stopped. This food is a life changer. I tell everyone I meet how it saved my boy and gave him his quality of life back." Another satisfied customer shared their positive experience, saying: "I honestly can't recommend Pure Pet Food enough. I love the way you can measure the correct amount your doggie needs, which helps with their weight. Lulu, my miniature dachshund, was overweight and had patchy skin with hair loss. We tried everything, after two months on this food, she is like a different dog, Her coat is glossy and she looks young again, I only wish they did this for humans!". Many customers have lauded the brand for its convenience and cost-effectiveness compared to raw food while still offering similar benefits. One customer detailed their experience: "Switching to Pure Pet Food has been a game-changer for feeding my two dogs. Previously, I fed them a raw diet, which led to numerous inconveniences. It required an extra freezer to store the meals, and I always had to remember to thaw it overnight, which became quite a hassle. Besides the logistical challenges, it was also rather costly. "Now I purchase just four bags each month, and I mix it with specialised kibble tailored for my German Shepherd and Dalmatian. The results speak for themselves! Their coats have never looked shinier, and their digestion has improved markedly. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this switch. Pure Pet Food has simplified our feeding routine and ensures my dogs are thriving without the hassle of a raw diet." However, not all pets were immediately taken with the natural cuisine – a discerning canine was reported to turn up its nose after an initial taste. "I have to say that the person on customer service was so polite and nice, which was so refreshing. However, my dog, who is fusy, did not like the chicken dog food. He ate it on the first two days with reluctance, and by the third day, he literally walked away from the bowl and didn't come back. I introduced the food slowly as instructed, but after a few days, my dog's stomach was churning, and I don't think it suited him." One contented customer gave four stars in their review, noting: "Pure provides an efficient service and the product is usually delivered on time. It's an excellent food product. My dog has had serious digestive issues in the past, including pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel syndrome. Since being on Pure, the health issues have stopped completely, and he is thriving. He loves the food too. I can thoroughly recommend the product. In addition, the team at Pure are always available and helpful."

Officials at the National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia are monitoring the movement of the plume. The extent to which it spreads will dpeend on the wind conditions and how much was released, according to Jackson County Emergency Management Director Robert Czechlewski. "Normally an incident like this will probably last a few hours" he said. Brad Price, an official with the Vinton County Health Department, warned that high exposure to nitric oxide can cause ""symptoms that range from irritation of eyes, skin, nose and throat, to drowsiness and maybe some unconsciousness". A statement from the Austin Powder plant in McArthur said there had been an unexpected release of nitric acid.

Kate Garraway felt 'it was no longer safe' while caring for Derek Draper
Kate Garraway has spoken candidly about the struggles she faced while caring for her late husband Derek Draper as he battled long Covid before his tragic death. Kate Garraway has bravely shared the challenges she faced while caring for her late husband Derek Draper, admitting there was a point when she no longer felt safe. Derek passed away at the age of 56 in 2022 after suffering a cardiac arrest. His health continued to decline following a long battle with health issues stemming from long Covid. Derek's condition worsened significantly after he caught Covid in March 2020, leading to his sad death four years later in January last year. Good Morning Britain host Kate stood by his side, taking on the role of his main carer. However, she has disclosed that exhaustion reached such a level at one point that she feared the situation had become a hazard for both herself and her children, reports the Mirror. In a conversation with the Sun, Kate detailed a three week period where there was a lack of care for Derek as authorities deliberated over which agency would be most appropriate to assist the family. During this time, she "had no choice but to try to get through looking after Derek 24/7 completely alone". Kate admitted: "By the end I was so sleep-deprived I was scared it was no longer safe - for me, for the children, let alone for Derek." She continued, "In desperation I called health services again and this time refused to get off the phone until some answer was given. In the end, the person on the other end of the phone, who was also clearly exhausted, told me, 'There is nothing I can do but - and this isn't official - you are not alone and what I always say to people is take him to AandE and leave him there, then they legally have to do something.'" Kate was taken aback that it had come to this point, questioning how the best solution seemed to be to "abandon" someone who wasn't safe to be left alone. She expressed gratitude for family members who assisted in the dreadful situation, but acknowledged that others might not be as fortunate. Kate also confessed to still experiencing a "tsunami of sadness", often waking up in the middle of the night in a panic thinking she hasn't given her husband his medication. She previously shared the poignant last moments she and her two children spent with Derek. In a conversation last year, Kate recalled how proud dad Derek told his children, Darcey and Billy: "You're the best children anyone could ask for. Look after mum, be good for her." Tragically, this was the last time Derek saw his two children before falling into a coma. Kate openly praised her children for their handling of their father's condition and passing. Speaking on Good Morning Britain in February last year in 2024, Kate said: "It was one of those stop-the-clock moments, where you want the world to stop. "It swamps you. We now have 24 hours, [which] turned out to be more of a month, of fighting on and fighting on, following the prognosis that he won't make it through. For the children when they heard he won't make it through, they've heard it so many times. "They were so beautiful, the children, about that. They individually had time with him on his own and Darcey said, 'If, dad, you can't do this, it's okay. Don't worry about us'. And I had similar conversations, a chance to hold his hand and smell his skin and hold him all the way through, and some people don't get that."
