The trio will remain behind bars at the Kgosi Mampuru Prison pending the outcome of the application.

The case is linked to a transformer stolen last year at the Laudium substation, where one suspect, another city official who was caught at the time, still remains behind bars.
One of the legal representatives, Advocate Siyabulela Pendani, said: "He will get bail. I do not foresee him not getting bail because this matter has been before the court before, and the previous accused got bail in the same matter. I also don't foresee the State opposing bail."

Operation Shanela stop-and-search: Clashes break out between police, motorists in Roodepoort
JOHANNESBURG - Clashes have broken out between police and motorists in Roodepoort as Gauteng authorities intensify stop-and-search operations under the banner of Operation Shanela. Officers stopped cars, delivery bikes and taxis on Thursday morning, with one driver refusing to produce an identity document (ID), claiming it violated his rights, while others complied. The weekday operation — led by Acting Provincial Commissioner Mbuso Khumalo — aims to stamp the State's authority and bring down crime in the area. The Roodepoort Police Station became the staging ground for this latest crime-fighting push, with police, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Home Affairs officials, and even local clergy joining the briefing. Multi-disciplinary teams fan out through the area, pulling over vehicles, checking licences, and verifying identities, an effort police said is necessary to root out illegal activity. Last week alone, similar operations netted over 80 arrests for drunk driving in Gauteng. On Thursday, tensions boiled over with some resisting police demands, but the operation continued unabated, with officers vowing to keep the pressure on.

NPA could take bid to bring Cholota all the way to ConCourt
JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it could take its bid to bring former Free State Premier Ace Magashule's ex-assistant Moroadi Cholotato all the way to the Constitutional Court. This is part of the NPA's plans to revive its corruption case against Cholota after suffering a legal blow at the Bloemfontein High Court in June. Cholota walked free on a technicality after the court ruled that her extradition from the United States (US) was unlawful and unconstitutional. The State's first attempt to challenge the judgment failed when the Bloemfontein High Court dismissed an application for leave to appeal. The NPA has now announced plans to take its petition to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). The NPA said it believes Judge Phillip Loubster erred in dismissing the application for leave to appeal and that there are reasonable prospects of success to appeal at the SCA. Given the possible far-reaching implications on many other extradition matters, the NPA said it is also exploring the possibility of approaching the apex court, challenging the same judgment. The State believes Cholota is a key figure in the asbestos case and in holding her former boss, Ace Magashule, to account for the scam. Magashule and a dozen others will still face corruption and fraud charges in relation to the botched R255 million asbestos contract when the trial resumes in January.

Attorneys for 3 Tshwane employees accused of stealing R7m transformer ask for them to be held in police cells
JOHANNESBURG - The media has been granted access to cover the court case involving three Tshwane municipal workers. They were arrested on Tuesday by the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit. It's alleged that the trio stole a R7 million transformer from the Laudium substation. The suspects are all privately represented by three different attorneys. Despite their requests that journalists not be allowed to film proceedings, the court ruled in favour of the media. Before the matter could be postponed for a bail application, the legal representatives of the suspects then requested that their clients be kept at the Atteridgeville Police Station cells instead of being transferred to the Kgosi Mampuru Prison pending the outcome of their bail application. State prosecutor Katlego Manana said: "My colleagues know the procedure that we normally follow, in that we need to get permission from the station commander to keep prisoners at the Atteridgeville Police Station cells." The court has adjourned for a break to consider the latest application.
