
New Comet Discovered — Here's When And Where To See It
Found in late March, comet SWAN25F has significantly increased in brightness, but it's not visible to the naked eye. Only those with telescopes and large binoculars (around 10x50mm) can observe it now.
Now 8th magnitude, it can be found during twilight above the northeastern horizon an hour before sunrise only from the Northern Hemisphere. It's just below Scheat, one of the bright corner stars of the Great Square of Pegasus. Virtual planetarium stargazing app Star Walk can be used to find it.
It should be visible from the Northern Hemisphere until mid-April, when it moves into the constellation Andromeda, according to Stargazing. After that, it will be lost in twilight as it approaches the sun.
Comet SWAN25F will reach perihelion — the closest it gets to the sun — on May 1, 2025. After that date, it will emerge into the post-sunset evening night sky, but it will only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere.
After perihelion, it's expected to reach 5th magnitude — the limit for human vision, but good for watching through binoculars.
'The comet shows a nice ion tail, with fine structures,' wrote Gianluna Masi, an astronomer at The Virtual Telescope Project, who imaged the comet on April 8 from Manciano, Italy. Astrophotographer Mike Olason has been posting new images from Tucson, Arizona, while experienced comet imagers Michael Jäger and Gerald Rhemann have also been posting photos from Weißenkirchen, Austria.
Comet SWAN25F is not its official designation because its discovery has not been officially announced. While its orbital path is being refined — with the help of amateur astronomers worldwide — it will keep this initial name. Once that work is complete, it will be officially announced and given a new name by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center.
Comet SWAN25F was discovered in late March by astronomer Michael Mattiazzo, Australia. Already relatively close to the sun, it was detected in images from the SWAN Instrument aboard NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The lateness of its discovery is likely due to a sudden outburst and, thus, a spike in its brightness. SOHO, a satellite that studies the sun, was launched almost 30 years ago.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope Discovers New Moon of Uranus
Scientists have discovered a new, elusive moon around Uranus, making it the 29th natural satellite known to orbit the ice giant. The research team that made the discovery estimates that the moon, dubbed S/2025 U1 for now (at least, until the International Astronomical Union assigns an official name), is just 10 kilometers, or six miles, across, making it particularly small. 'I could walk around this moon,' says Heidi Hammel, a planetary scientist and astrophysicist, who was not involved in the research. In 1986 Voyager 2 flew within 81,800 km of Uranus's cloud tops and gave humans their first close-up glimpse of this giant planet. The spacecraft returned with images of 11 new moons, on top of the five that were already known. Since Voyager, astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes have spotted other tiny moons—ones as little 12 to 16 km in diameter. There are still many questions about the new minuscule moon for astronomers to explore: How does it compare with other moons? What is its color and composition? JWST might help answer a few of these questions. But regardless of what comes next, the discovery shows 'how we can extend the horizons of our knowledge, even in our own solar system, using an advanced telescope like JWST,' Hammel says. 'And it helps us get a better understanding of what drives the phenomena in our solar system—like ''What is crafting that ring system around the planet Uranus?''

Currently designated S/2025 U1, the tiny moon's estimated to be around six miles in diameter which is potentially why it wasn't previously spotted by Voyager 2 or other telescopes. It's located about 35,000 miles from the center of Uranus in an orbit between Ophelia and Bianca.

Roll out the cosmic welcome mat for our solar system's newest resident: a never-before-seen moon orbiting Uranus. A team of astronomers announced Tuesday that a new satellite measuring roughly 90 football fields across was discovered around the seventh planet from the sun. The moon, which was first seen by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope on Feb. 2, joins a busy neighborhood of 28 other known moons around Uranus. The Webb telescope's observations of Uranus are giving scientists better insight into one of the more mysterious planets in our solar system. 'No other planet has as many small inner moons as Uranus,' Matthew Tiscareno, a member of the research team and a senior research scientist at the SETI Institute in California, said in a statement. Tiscareno said the 'complex inter-relationships' between Uranus' moons and its faint rings suggest the planet's evolutionary history may have been a chaotic one. 'Moreover, the new moon is smaller and much fainter than the smallest of the previously known inner moons, making it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered,' he said in the statement. The newfound satellite is about 35,000 miles from the center of the planet, with a near circular orbit, according to the researchers. It's only about 6 miles across — a distance that can be walked in about two hours at a brisk pace — but follow-up observations are needed to confirm the moon's size and other characteristics. The discovery has also not yet been peer-reviewed. Uranus has five large, outer moons named Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon. The newly discovered moon is inside the orbits of the five larger moons, the researchers said. All of Uranus' moons are named after characters from the works of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope, according to NASA. The new moon does not yet have a name, though any designation will eventually need to be approved by the International Astronomical Union, which oversees the official naming process for astronomical objects. 'It's a small moon but a significant discovery, which is something that even NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft didn't see during its flyby nearly 40 years ago,' Maryame El Moutamid, a lead scientist in the Southwest Research Institute's Solar System Science and Exploration Division, said in a statement. In 1986, the Voyager 2 probe became the first human-made object to fly past Uranus, giving humanity its first close-up views of the distant planet. The historic encounter yielded more than 7,000 photographs of Uranus and helped scientists discover two new rings and 11 new moons around the planet. The newest moon's tiny size likely made it too small for Voyager 2's cameras to see, but the Webb telescope's high-resolution instruments may shed more light on the planet and its system. 'Looking forward, the discovery of this moon underscores how modern astronomy continues to build upon the legacy of missions like Voyager 2,' El Moutamid said in the statement.
