All the household gadgets that actually do save you money

MoneyMagpie Editor and financial expert Vicky Parry reveals the best household gadgets that are worth investing in to save more money in the long-term
It's important to save money whenever you can in life, no matter whether you're scrimping at the end of each month or living in luxury. Having a financial buffer is important, but so is enjoying life!
That's why, sometimes, it is worth spending a little bit more to get a gadget that makes your life easier or more enjoyable in some way. And it's even better when those gadgets can save you cash in the long-term!

E-Reader (and a library card)
For any avid reader, books are a necessity. But they take up a lot of space and can also cost a lot of money for each one. E-readers are perfect for people who read a lot of books, especially if they do so on a commute or while travelling.

You can store hundreds (usually thousands) of books on one small device with a long battery life, rather than lugging physical books around at great cost for each one.
E-Books are generally cheaper than physical books, especially if you choose a subscription service such as Kindle Unlimited or Kobo Plus, which let you access a huge catalogue of e-books for a set fee each month.
But you can also get them for free! Libraries now use apps like Libby, Hoopla, and BorrowBox and some e-readers integrate with them. Load up your library card and borrow e-books just like you would physical books. This is also a great way to support authors, as they can still collect a royalty payment for library books – it doesn't cost you anything, but they get a small amount for their work.

Coffee machine
If you regularly buy takeaway coffee or like to enjoy a freshly ground Colombian roast first thing in the morning, a proper coffee machine will make your day enjoyable. More than that, it could save you a fortune in the long run if it means you give up buying several takeaway coffees each week!
Pod machines like Tassimo and Nespresso are convenient but the cost per pod can make them more expensive in the longer term, and it's hard to customise your drink. There are now lots of affordable espresso machines on the market, which give you more control over your coffee choices. Some, like the Morphy Richards compact espresso machine, use both pods and ground coffee so you can make the most of deals on either type to save money on your coffee habit every day!

Smart plugs
If you're often finding appliances left on overnight that you meant to turn off, or need something to charge only during off-peak energy tariff hours, a smart plug is a godsend.
You can set timers to turn appliances on and off at times that suit you, or even operate remotely when you're out of the house – perfect if you're worried that you left your hair straighteners on.
Eco shower head
If low water pressure is the bane of your shower routine, an eco shower head could make all the difference. They are designed with a narrower entrance to the shower head, which increases pressure. If you've ever pressed your thumb over the end of a garden hose and taken the pressure from lacklustre to 'water fight extraordinaire', it's the same principal.

Eco shower heads not only make your shower more enjoyable, but they also mean you could save on water costs overall, especially if you have a water meter. That's because you won't need a ten minute shower just to rinse shampoo out of your hair anymore, as it'll get done in three minutes instead! Over the course of a year, this can save a significant amount of water (and therefore money).
Air fryer
They were originally touted as a fad, but air fryers are here to stay. People love them because they are convenient and it's easy to make almost anything in them. They'll fit in most kitchens – and can be used by those who might not have access to a kitchen, too.
Air fryers are very efficient, cutting cooking time for most things. They use a lot less energy than an oven too, so they'll save a lot of money over time if you use your air fryer more than your oven. They're also handy if you're not a great cook, or have a tendency to get distracted while cooking. The timers on air fryers mean things will cook only for the set time and not burn, unlike pans forgotten on the stove or in the oven. This also makes them safer for people unable to use hobs or ovens to cook independently.

Single basket air fryers are ideal for single people, while dual baskets allow for entire meals to be cooked at the same time for up to 6 people in some models.
Reusable battery charger
If you use a lot of devices with batteries, you could be spending an unnecessary fortune, not to mention causing environmental impact when you dispose of them. Rechargeable batteries are very useful, and mean you'll never run out when you need one!
You can charge several batteries at once, and either have a charger that takes the most common sizes you use (such as AA or AAA), or a multi-size charger. Even better, combine with a smart plug to charge on off-peak time to save money.

Heated airer
Heated airers are perfect for drying clothes faster at a low cost. A tumble dryer costs around £1.50 each hour-long cycle, compared to around 14p for a heated airer. They work even more efficiently if you pair with a small dehumidifier, too.
Heated airers make it easy to dry clothes faster but perhaps more importantly, help prevent problems caused by having damp clothes indoors for long periods of time. Constantly hanging damp clothes that take days to dry can induce mould growth, which is hard to spot if it's behind wallpaper or furniture, and can cause health issues.
Some subscriptions
Not all subscriptions can save you money. But if there is a service type that you use all the time, it can be a great way to save – especially if you share an account with someone else to split costs.

Spotify Family, for example, allows several people in the same household on the account, saving a chunk of cash each year. But if you're buying your own individual subscription, remember to check out Spotify gift cards first, because that could save you around £30 on an annual subscription as an annual gift card is £120 compared to £143.88 paid monthly through the app.
Readly is another great example of a subscription that could save a lot of cash, if you like reading newspapers and magazines. It costs £12.99 a month, but with magazines around £5 each that means you only need to read one per week to save money. They also currently have a two-month free trial to test it out – and keep an eye out for gift card reductions on annual memberships, too (particularly around Christmas time).
Subscribe and Save offers on your regular purchases, such as dog food from specialist suppliers, can be worth subscribing to as well. Just make sure you know the cancellation and pause terms, so if you decide it isn't for you, you can get out of the contract without huge fees.

‘Easy to use' Tassimo coffee machine gets a price cut to less than £40

Investing in a home coffee machine can be an intimidating task, particularly for those who have never used one before. Not to mention that acquiring an espresso machine to make a fresh brew without leaving the comfort of our homes can cost a few hundred quid up front. However, Tassimo has unveiled several rather impressive deals on its coffee machines, which only require the use of pods to create a delicious morning or afternoon cuppa. All users need are some coffee pods (the machines are compatible with Tassimo's range) to create a drink that rivals the one from the indie cafe down the road. These Tassimo machines rival the likes of Nespresso's Vertuo Pop Pod Coffee Machine by Krups, which is on sale for £59.99, and Versuni PHILIPS L'OR Barista Sublime Capsule Coffee Machine, now £69.99 from £109.99, both of which operate with the touch of a button and require coffee pods. The latter can also pour a double shot, allowing it to make two cups of coffee at once if desired. This may make it a favourite with couples who enjoy a coffee together in the morning. While these deals are impressive, some of Tassimo's coffee machines are available for up to 58% off, with many costing less than £40. It is ideal for beginners to make espresso at home, according to The Mirror. For those seeking an affordable entry into the world of coffee machines without breaking the bank, the brand's Style Friendly is currently on offer for £34.99, reduced from £79.99. This compact model, measuring 265 x 171 x 320mm, is a perfect starter coffee machine for those with limited kitchen space. While it is available in three colours, the cream and white versions are slightly pricier at £39.99. The coffee machine, touted as offering 'hassle-free brewing', is constructed from 57% recycled plastic and features Intellibrew technology. This aids in the brewing process for various types of coffee, from lattes to robust espressos. There's no need for pre-heating, and, as mentioned earlier, a single button press is all it takes to brew the perfect cup - just remember to insert the pod. Meanwhile, the brand's Happy coffee machine, now £34.99 from £79.99, is slightly lighter, weighing in at 1.5kg compared to 2.6kg. With dimensions of 265 x 175 x 305 mm, this machine has won over customers for its ease of use and ability to produce 'very nice coffee'. While the cream design is a sophisticated choice that'll certainly brighten up a space and add to it without being too garish (as some appliances can be), the Happy also comes in black for a sleek and stylish look. The machine boasts an impressive 4.7-star rating, with coffee enthusiasts praising it as a 'brilliant machine' and finding it better than they expected. Another customer added: "This is my fourth Tassimo, and I would say it's the best. It seems to give a larger drink. I ordered online at a discount, and it was delivered without a problem." However, for some, it wasn't quite up to scratch. One three-star shopper said: "The machine is very basic; I should have gone for a better model." For those who prefer a more intense coffee in the morning, the brand's FINESSE Cream Coffee Machine has been discounted in the sale to £39.99, down from £89.99, shaving £50 off the original price. Available in four different colours - red, cream, white, and black - the machine is similar to the models above in terms of functionality and design. Still, it has been crafted with IntensityBoost technology, which, as the brand describes, helps users adapt the coffee intensity to their taste. Pressing the button for three seconds intensifies the flavour. Weighing in at 2.75kg and measuring 366 x 265 x 157 mm, this slightly larger model has won the hearts of Tassimo coffee enthusiasts, one of whom gave it a 5-star rating and said: "I like it a lot, the extra feature to intensify the flavour is welcomed. A big Tassimo fan now onto my fourth machine bought at a great price." While some users found the gadget's water tank 'too small' at 0.7L, others didn't share the same concern, with many hailing it as the 'best yet'. Interestingly, these three models feature a button to start the coffee brewing process on the side, where users can place their mug. However, the priciest model in the deals, which is still a pretty savvy find, has its power button just above the mug and offers several different settings to experiment with. It's crucial to remember that these coffee machines don't include a milk frother, and these offers don't always come with coffee pods. Therefore, ensure the deal with the extra pods has been selected before checking out. For a machine with a milk frother, there's the L'OR Barista Sublime, which comes with a separate milk frother and 100 capsules. Shoppers have praised it as "easy to use" and for pouring a "delicious cup of coffee". However, for shoppers not wanting froth, the Tassimo My Way 2, which usually retails at £99.99, has been reduced to £69.99. Unlike some of the previous models, this coffee machine is equipped with a BRITA filter and doesn't just provide coffee - it can also be used to create any hot drink, with tea and hot chocolate pods from Tassimo being compatible with it. With a larger water tank of 1.6L, 1500W power (compared to the usual 1400W), and dimensions of 285 x 228 x 340 mm, the machine is slightly larger and has increased capacity to produce a variety of different-sized coffees. It also features an automatic power-down to help save energy. Shoppers have been raving about the latest improvements on this gadget, with one elated customer saying in their five-star review: "This is such a step up from my old Tassimo basic coffee maker. I used to have to keep my finger pressed on the button to top up my cup, which was so annoying. "With this little beauty, I simply select the large cup, and it's sorted - a full cup every time. It is very good. I like that it makes my coffee hot, and I can have it strong or weak." However, some users noted that the initial setup was somewhat challenging due to unclear instructions. As one customer put it: "Only criticism so far concerns the graphic-only instruction sheet. The images are just not clear and understandable enough. Fully detailed written instructions in a multi-lingual and illustrated booklet would be a great improvement." In addition to its functionality, the My Way 2's style also earned praise, with a reviewer noting: "Very good looking machine, about the footprint size of a four-slice toaster. You can control the strength, temperature and size of coffee. You can store your four preferences in memory. The water reservoir is easy to fill and has a water filter. It's quiet and efficient, but most of all, it makes great coffee."

Martin Lewis shares 'key message' after major Winter Fuel Payment U-turn update

Martin Lewis shares a "key message" after Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed yesterday that Winter Fuel Payments will be extended to more pensioners this winter. Speaking at an event in Rochdale, Greater Manchester yesterday, Reeves told reporters that "more people will get Winter Fuel Payment this winter", adding that further details will be announced "as soon as we possibly can". She said: "People should be in no doubt that the means test will increase and more people will get Winter Fuel Payment this winter." The Money Saving Expert (MSE) website founder took to social media after the news broke, and posted a video with his "instant" response. He opened by saying he was "delighted" by the news, adding that the government was set to increase the level of means-test for the up to £300 winter support payment. He then said it was worth "explaining" the two issues he had always had with the way that the Winter Fuel Payment means-test had been put in place. He explained: "The first one is the level. Currently, for a single pensioner, only those earning under £11,800 a year get the £200 or £300 winter fuel help. Now with energy bills still high and other energy bill help being taken away, that really was a big hit to the pensioners who were just above that limit. "I'm hoping to see this limit increase from the current £11,800 up to £20,000 or more. Perhaps they might only do it and link it to higher-rate taxpayers. Martin then said the other question - which was one of the "main reasons" he wanted to publish a video response - was about the "method of means-testing." He added: "The means test that they linked Winter Fuel payment to was Pension Credit. Now, Pension Credit has long been a flawed benefit which has been critically underclaimed, and even now, after all the communication over Winter Fuel, there are still 700,000 eligible pensioners who should get Pension Credit and thus winter fuel payments who don't because they don't claim. "Often, it will be vulnerable people with onset dementia or people who just can't go through the complicated process, especially on forms, or the message hasn't been passed on to them as it's quite difficult to explain the level of income that you need to get it. "So let's just put that into perspective, 700,000 people who have a total income of under £11,800 a year are missing out on the Winter Fuel Payment, even though that's the level the government says they should get it. From universal credit to furlough, employment rights, travel updates and emergency financial aid - we've got all of the big financial stories you need to know about right now. Sign up to our Mirror Money newsletter here. "So my big message to the Chancellor is, don't just increase the threshold. You have to look at the means test mechanism to make sure that the most vulnerable pensioners in this country, if they have income below your threshold, actually get the Winter Fuel Payment. And my fingers are crossed they'll be listening." Last year, the Labour government means-tested the Winter Fuel Payment. This meant that only certain pensioners over the age of 66 would receive the money, rather than all pensioners. The move saw over nine million pensioners in the UK lose the extra cash last winter. Labour faced severe backlash at the time, which has continued to follow them. Legal challenges have been raised against the government for the move, with charities warning that it would push more older Brits into poverty. The axing of the benefit was also linked to the rise in Reform Councillors in the recent elections. The Chancellor said public finances are in a stronger position than they were last July - meaning thresholds can be raised. Reeves added that ministers had listened to concerns about the controversial decision.

Two more major retailers hit by cyber attacks with customer information stolen

Luxury watchmaker and jeweller Cartier and outdoor retailer The North Face confirmed this week that they had become the latest retailers to be hit Two more major high street retailers have been hit by cyber attacks and both confirm customer data was compromised, as the number of malware hacks at retailers continues to climb. Luxury watchmaker and jeweller Cartier and outdoor retailer The North Face confirmed this week that they had become the latest retailers to be hit. ‌ In an email to customers, the upmarket watch retailer said that "an unauthorised party gained temporary access" to its system and "obtained limited client information". ‌ This included names and email addresses. However, the Swiss-owned company confirmed that the data accessed did not include passwords or banking information. Cartier did not confirm exactly when the cyber attack took place. In the email, it said: "We contained the issue and have further enhanced the protection of our systems and data." It added that it had boosted its cybersecurity measures and reported the incident to the relevant authorities. Get the best deals and tips from Mirror Money Fashion brand The North Face admitted that it had experienced a "small-scale" attack in April this year. The retailer said the stolen information could include shipping addresses, purchase history, email addresses, names, phone numbers and dates of birth. Again, it told customers that financial information was not accessed. The retailer told its customers that the hackers had used a technique called "credential stuffing". ‌ This is where attackers try usernames and passwords stolen from another data breach, in the hope that customers have reused the same passwords across multiple accounts. It urged all customers to change passwords to their accounts. These attacks are part of a series of recent cybersecurity incidents that have affected high-profile retailers, including Marks & Spencer, Co-op, Adidas, Harrods, and Victoria's Secret. ‌ M&S and the Co-op had their operations severely disrupted when they were targeted in April. M&S said the cyber attack will cost it over £300million, and seven weeks after it occurred, the retailer is still unable to take online orders. It says its services will likely continue to be disrupted until July. At the time, the upmarket supermarket and retailer confirmed that the stolen information could include people's names, home addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses, as well as dates of birth and online order history. Retailers are often targets of cyber attacks, due to the amount of data they can hold on a customer. James Hadley, founder of the cybersecurity company Immersive, told the BBC that the attacks are a "harsh reality" for the industry. He noted that retailers were "overflowing with customer information," and are "easy targets for attackers".
