AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton Warns: Plumbing Safer Than Coding in Automation Era

Hans India18-06-2025
As artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize industries at an unprecedented pace, one of the field's founding fathers is offering a sobering perspective on the future of work. Geoffrey Hinton, the renowned British-Canadian computer scientist widely regarded as the 'Godfather of AI,' is urging people to rethink their career paths—recommending plumbing as a more secure option than coding.
In a recent interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast hosted by Steven Bartlett, Hinton expressed deep concerns about job displacement driven by automation. 'A good bet would be to be a plumber,' he said, suggesting that physical labor is much harder to automate than tasks rooted in data and information processing. 'It's going to be a long time before [AI is] as good at physical manipulation as us.'
While AI can swiftly process legal documents, generate marketing material, and handle countless other intellectual tasks, it falters when it comes to jobs requiring hands-on dexterity and adaptability. Trades like plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work often involve unpredictable environments and real-time decision-making—areas where machines still struggle to compete with humans.
'Fixing a leaking tap or rewiring a house demands judgment and skills that are hard to replicate with current AI capabilities,' Hinton explained. That's why he believes these trades are likely to remain resilient in the face of rapid technological change.
In contrast, many traditional white-collar roles are already being reshaped by AI tools. Jobs once seen as stable—such as legal assistants or paralegals—are now being threatened by language models that can analyze contracts, predict case outcomes, and produce detailed summaries faster than a human ever could.
Hinton, now 77, has played a crucial role in the development of neural networks—the technology that powers today's advanced AI systems. Yet he admits to struggling with the emotional implications of the revolution he helped spark. 'Intellectually, you can see the threat,' he said. 'But it's very hard to come to terms with it emotionally.'
One of his deeper fears is the widening gap between those who benefit from AI and those who don't. 'In a society which shares things fairly, everybody should be better off,' he noted. 'But if you can replace lots of people by AIs, then the people who get replaced will be worse off."
He even envisioned a scenario where AI could eventually control critical infrastructure like power stations with minimal human oversight. 'If AI ever decided to take over,' he speculated, 'it would need people for a while to run the power stations, until it designed better analogue machines. There are so many ways it could get rid of people, all of which would, of course, be very nasty.'
Hinton's warnings aren't meant to incite panic, but rather to encourage society to reflect critically on how AI is shaping our economic and social structures. If current trends continue, the plumber—not the programmer—may emerge as one of the most future-proof professions.

TSX posts biggest decline since April as US jobs data spooks investors

TSX ends down 0.9% at 27,020.43 For the week, the index declines 1.7% Technology sector falls 2.4% Energy loses 1.9% as oil settles 2.8% lower TORONTO, - Canada's main stock index fell for a third straight day on Friday as investors weighed disappointing U.S. jobs data and an escalation in the U.S. trade war with Canada. The S&P/TSX composite index ended down 239.35 points, or 0.9%, at 27,020.43, extending its pullback from a record closing high on Tuesday. It was the index's sharpest decline since April 10. For the week, the TSX was down 1.7%. "August tends to be one of the worst months for the year and it's setting off to do that once again, as we're seeing some volatility and a quick drop-off with weaker payroll numbers in the U.S. and just some concerns around earnings so far," said Greg Taylor, chief investment officer at PenderFund Capital Management. "A lot of the better companies usually report first in the cycle, and we got that, now we're starting to see some weakness." Wall Street posted steep declines as failed to meet lofty expectations for its Amazon Web Services cloud computing unit and after U.S. jobs data disappointed. U.S. employment growth was weaker than expected in July while the nonfarm payrolls count for the prior two months was revised down by a massive 258,000 jobs, suggesting a sharp deterioration in labor market conditions. Domestic data was also downbeat. Canada's manufacturing sector contracted for a sixth straight month in July as tariffs undercut trade with the United States and spurred firms to reduce inventory as well as staffing levels. U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order increasing tariffs on Canadian goods to 35% from 25% on all products not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. All ten major sectors on the TSX ended lower, led by a 2.4% decline for technology. Energy lost 1.9% as worries about a possible increase in OPEC oil production weighed on the price of oil. U.S. crude futures settled 2.8% lower at $67.33 a barrel. Heavily weighted financials lost 0.9%. MDA Space Ltd was a bright spot. Its shares jumped 18.4% after the aerospace company was selected as the prime contractor on a project for Echostar.

WinZO disputes Google's CCI proposal on Play Store rules

Bengaluru: Real‑money gaming platform WinZO has raised concerns over Google's latest proposal to the Competition Commission of India (CCI), arguing that it does not adequately address the anti‑competitive issues flagged in an ongoing investigation. The case originates from WinZO's December 2022 complaint alleging that Google abused its dominant position by restricting Play Store access to only fantasy sports and rummy apps while excluding other real‑money gaming categories. With Google controlling 96% of India's app distribution market, WinZO said this policy inflated user acquisition costs by 'at least 10x' for apps distributed outside the Play Store. Acting on the complaint, the CCI in November 2024 ordered a formal investigation, citing prima facie violations of competition law, including the imposition of unfair conditions, denial of market access and limiting of market development. The Commission had noted Google's lack of clear criteria for its pilot programme, inconsistent enforcement of its ads policy and 'misleading payment warnings' shown to users sideloading apps, which it said artificially deterred usage. In a public notice issued recently the CCI invited comments on Google's commitment offer. Google's proposal includes allowing all real‑money games that are certified by recognised third‑party bodies, replacing its pilot programme for fantasy sports and rummy apps and permitting certified skill‑based games to advertise on Google Ads. If approved, Google has committed to implement the Play Store changes within 120 days and its advertising changes within 150 days of the CCI's order. The deadline for public comments is August 20, 2025. Responding to WinZO's objections, a Google spokesperson said the company welcomed the CCI's market testing of its proposed framework, describing it as the result of 'constructive discussions' with the regulator and Indian developers. Google added that it is confident the proposal will create 'a more open and safe ecosystem' for real‑money gaming apps, empower local developers and prioritise user safety. In its statement, WinZO said Google's commitments 'must be robust and genuinely eliminate the discriminatory practices identified,' adding that the proposed framework's reference to 'developing' a commercial model for real‑money gaming lacked clear timelines or objective criteria. WinZO, which reported a 70% rise in revenue to Rs 1,055 crore and a 151% increase in profit to Rs 315 crore in FY24, said it will continue to participate in the consultation process 'to ensure fairness, transparency and a level playing field in India's digital economy.'
