Derby winner Mystik Dan finally wins again
June 2 (UPI) -- The 2024 Kentucky Derby winner finally returned to the winner's circle in a high point of weekend horse racing, while next weekend's finale of this year's Triple Crown series shaped up as a showdown between the Derby and Preakness winners.
On the international scene, Croix du Nord won the Japanese Derby and Camille Pissarro captured the French Derby, so it's a weekend to tip the derby to the year's best 3-year-olds.
The coming week includes four stakes-packed days at Saratoga's Belmont Stakes festival and a similar clutch of big races on Epsom Down surrounding the Derby and Oaks. It's a big one.
Meanwhile ...
The Triple Crown
Next Saturday's $2 million Grade I Belmont Stakes at Saratoga is shaping up as a showdown between Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and Preakness winner Journalism.
Sovereignty defeated Journalism in the Derby and skipped the Preakness, so it's not quite a rubber match. But it certainly will carry bragging rights.
If there was any doubt of Journalism making his third start in a span of five weeks, trainer Michael McCarthy dispelled it after the colt turned in a strong half-mile work Sunday at Saratoga.
Classic
The 2024 Kentucky Derby winner, Mystik Dan, returned to the scene of that triumph to complete something of a comeback with a professional victory in Saturday's $275,000 Grade III Blame Stakes.
With Derby-winning jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. in the irons, the 4-year-old saved ground all the way around the Churchill Downs track, cut the corner into the stretch while others swung wide and wasn't challenged in the final furlong. He finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.45.
After winning the Derby, Mystik Dan finished second in the Preakness and eighth in the Belmont. Trainer Kenny McPeek soldiered on with him after a break, finishing sixth in the Grade I Malibu at Santa Anita in December and ninth in the Grade I Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in January.
He finally got back to form with a runner-up showing in the Lake Ouachita Stakes at Oaklawn Park on May 3.
At Woodbine, Classic Mo Town seized the lead near the sixteenth pole in Saturday's $175,000 (Canadian) Grade II bet364 Eclipse Stakes and won by 3/4 length over Webslinger.
Distaff
Royal Spa took a wide swing into the stretch in Saturday's $275,000 Shawnee Stakes for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs, worked to the lead and cleared to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
On Saturday at Woodbine, Caitlinhergrtness split rivals nearing the top of the stretch in the $180,000 (Canadian) Grade III Belle Mahoney Stakes and kicked away to win by 5 lengths.
Turf
Mercante won Saturday's $275,000 Grade III Arlington Stakes at Churchill Downs. In the 3-year-old companion $275,000 Audubon Stakes, World Beater edged King of Ashes in the final yards to win by a neck.
Saturday's $100,000 Jersey Derby came off the Monmouth Park turf, and the field was scratched down to just three. Barbadian Runner did his best running late to get the win by 7 1/4 lengths.
Filly & Mare Turf
Pin Up Betty rallied five-wide into the stretch to win Sunday's $250,000 Grade III Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes at Churchill Downs. A day earlier, Fionn rallied from last of nine to take the $275,000 Regret Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
Turf Sprint
Ms. Tart led a trio of long shots home in Saturday's $150,000 (Canadian) Grade III HPIbet Royal North Stakes at Woodbine, finishing 1/2 length ahead of Ready to Jam with Ticker Tape Home third.
The favorite, Earhart, finished last and the upset generated tote board-busting returns, including $854.80 for a 20-cent trifecta ticket. Ms. Tart, a 4-year-old Maximus Mischief filly, ran 6 1/2 furlongs on good turf in 1:15.56 with Huber Villa-Gomez posting the winning ride.
Sprint
Nysos dueled his way to the lead in Saturday's $100,000 Grade III Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita, and then left three rivals in the dust as he drew off to win by 5 1/2 lengths as the odds-on favorite. The win improved Nysos's record to four wins and one second from five starts.
"Now from here we can build and pick our spots," winning trainer Bob Baffert said after the Triple Bend. "Eventually, on to the Breeders' Cup."
Durante let the favorites do all the early work in Saturday's $275,000 Grade III Aristides at Churchill Downs, and then came along to pick up the pieces, winning by 1 length over World Record.
Patches O'Houlihan was a late scratch from Saturday's $150,000 (Canadian) Grade III Jacques Cartier Stakes, leaving just three to contest the 6 furlongs on the Woodbine all-weather course. Old Chestnut led the other two throughout and won by 2 3/4 lengths over the odds-on favorite, Simcoe.
Filly & Mare Sprint
R Disaster bid adieu to her five rivals in the stretch run of Saturday's $100,000 Rehoboth Stakes at Delaware Park, scooting off to a 6 1/2-length victory. The 4-year-old Awesome Slew filly, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., ran 6 furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.83 for jockey Jorge Ruiz.
Sweet Azteca was a late scratch from Sunday's $100,000 Desert Stormer Stakes at Santa Anita, leaving just three to face the starter.
Super Shine led the other two throughout the 6 furlongs and won by 2 lengths from Chismosa with Fayette Fox another 4 1/4 lengths back in third.
Super Shine, an Argentine-bred mare by Super Saver, ran 6 furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.46. Hector Berrios had the mount for trainer Phil D'Amato.
Around the world, around the clock
Japan
Croix du Nord forged back to the top of Japan's 3-year-old crop with an uneventful, impressive victory in Sunday's Grade 1 Tokyo Yushun or Japanese Derby.
The Kitasan Black colt stalked the pace, surged to the lead when asked by jockey Yuichi Kitamura and won by 3/4 length over Masquerade Ball.
Shohei, named after Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, was third.
Croix du Nord won the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes in December and was named Japan's top 2-year-old of 2024. He was the favorite in both the Satsuki Sho and the Toyko Yushun.
France
Camille Pissarro won Sunday's Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club or French Derby at Chantilly by 1/2 length over Cualificar and another neck from Detain. Trapped along the rail approaching the final 150 meters, jockey Ryan Moore sniffed out a narrow opening and pointed Camille Pissarro into it. He responded and the race was over.
Coolmore "lad" Michael Tabor said in the combination of Camille Pissarro, Moore and O'Brien, he and his partners had "the best horse, the best trainer and the best jockey," Racing Post reported. And while the victory carried an entry into October's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, O'Brien was in no hurry to commit to that.
Hong Kong
Helios Express has been chasing all-world sprinter Ka Ying Rising through much of the 2024-25 Hong Kong season. Freed from that one's shadow, he overcame a slow start to rally from last and win Saturday's Group 3 Sha Tin Vase by just more than a head bob from Invincible Sage.
The remarkably consistent runner had finished second five times and third on two other occasions to Ka Ying Rising in seven starts this campaign.

Disciplinary hearing for K.C. Chiefs' Rashee Rice expected Sept. 30
1 of 5 | Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is expected to be available for the first four weeks of the season. File Photo by David Tulis/UPI | License Photo Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The NFL's disciplinary hearing for the Kansas City Chiefs' Rashee Rice is expected to be Sept. 30 in New York, clearing a path for him to play early in the 2025 season. Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and the Washington Post about the hearing date Thursday afternoon. A Sept. 30 date could make Rice available for the Chiefs' first four games of the regular season. The hearing stems from the 25-year-old's role in a March 2024 car crash in Dallas. Rice was sentenced in July to five years of probation and 30 days in jail after he plead guilty to two third-degree felony charges as a result. The NFL typically waits until legal matters are resolved before imposing suspensions under its personal conduct policy. Rice, who police said was driving 119 mph when he crashed a Lamborghini Urus and caused a chain reaction of collisions, also had to pay restitution to the victims for their medical expenses -- more than $115,000. Rice, a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, missed 13 games last season due to a knee injury. He totaled 938 yards and seven scores on 79 catches as a rookie. The Chiefs will face the Seattle Seahawks in their second preseason game at 10 p.m. EDT Friday in Seattle. They will host the Chicago Bears in their preseason finale Aug. 22 in Kansas City, Mo. The Chiefs will play the Los Angeles Chargers in their regular season opener Sept. 5 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Has Derby's playing style changed this season?
"I know player power rules but I've not heard a manager out a player like that and still pick him in his team. It's a player Derby could really do with." Former Derby striker Malcolm Christie, Dominic Dietrich and Ed Dawes reflect on the first week of the new season, the potential signing of Lewis Travis and a first win of the campaign after a 3-2 win on penalties against West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup. Fantasy football: Robinson, Barkley lead Top-75 running back rankings
1 of 6 | Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley was the second-highest-scoring running back on a fantasy points per game basis last season. File Photo by Laurence Kesterson/UPI | License Photo MIAMI, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Bijan Robinson, Saquon Barkley and Jahmyr Gibbs lead my Top 75 fantasy football running back rankings for the 2025 season. Christian McCaffrey and De'Von Achane round out my Top 5. Derrick Henry, Kyren Williams, Ashton Jeanty, Josh Jacobs and Chase Brown are among my Top-10 options at the position. Running back remains the premier position in many leagues, which often deploy three in weekly lineups. My draft strategy leans toward prioritizing wide receivers, but you still should conduct intense research into running backs around the league. Strength of schedule, injury history, projected workload, offensive line strength or weakness, and red zone production are among key factors to consider when surveying the running back landscape. My Top 75 wide receiver rankings are available here. Those rankings, as well as others, will be updated up until the start of the NFL's regular season. I split my top targets of the 75 ranked players into five tiers: Hall of Fame, All-Pro, Pro Bowl, Just Napping (early to mid-round targets) and Deep Sleepers (mid- to late-round sleepers). The full rankings are below. Hall of Fame 1. Bijan Robinson, 2. Saquon Barkley Robinson finished third in fantasy points per game among running backs last season, when he accumulated the fourth-most yards from scrimmage (1,887). I expect even more production from the Atlanta Falcons running back this season, when he faces a schedule that includes six games against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the most fantasy points allowed to running backs in 2024. Those meetings include four games against teams that ranked inside the Top 5 for the most fantasy points allowed to the position. Robinson and the Falcons do not have any matchups against teams that ranked inside the Top 5 for the fewest fantasy points allowed to running backs last season. The Falcons also are turning to Michael Penix Jr. as their full-time starter for the first time and could opt to lean on their workhorse even more, leading to a career-high in touches for Robinson. It's understandable if you choose to pick up Barkley instead of Robinson with your first pick due to the Philadelphia Eagles' recent dominance, but I think Robinson has the higher ceiling in 2025. Barkley is fresh off an Offensive Player of the Year campaign that saw him compile a ridiculous 2,283 yards from scrimmage and 15 scores over 16 starts. Unlike Robinson's Falcons, the Eagles face a brutal schedule for fantasy football running backs. That gauntlet includes just one matchup against a team that ranked inside the Top 5 for the most fantasy points allowed to the position last season. They Eagles have five games against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the fewest fantasy points allowed to running backs. Barkley is still an elite option and should be a factor on a weekly basis, but I don't envision a repeat of his record-breaking 2024 campaign. He is my RB2. All-Pro 3. Jahmyr Gibbs, 4. Christian McCaffrey, 5. De'Von Achane, 6. Derrick Henry Gibbs is among the players with the highest ceilings in my 2025 rankings. The Detroit Lions star trailed only Barkley in fantasy points per game last season among running backs. He also ranked third in the league with 1,929 yards from scrimmage. The Lions have a difficult schedule ahead, with six games against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the fewest fantasy points allowed to running backs last season, including all of those matchups occurring within their first 10 games. But Gibbs' ability as a pass catcher and explosive runner in one of the NFL's best offenses can't be ignored. He is a safe RB1 target in the first round of all fantasy drafts. McCaffrey was once a surefire No. 1 overall pick in fantasy drafts, but injuries and the emergence of other talent at the position have dropped his average draft position. The San Francisco 49ers star, who sits at No. 4 in my rankings, could be a bargain in drafts in 2025. The 49ers' schedule includes six matchups against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the most fantasy points allowed to running backs last season. Three of those matchups come within the first four weeks of the season, meaning McCaffrey owners could get off to a sizzling start. McCaffrey, who missed 13 games last season, is just two years removed from a Offensive Player of the Year-winning campaign in which he totaled 2,023 yards from scrimmage and 21 scores. He also could be leaned on more than ever as the 49ers enter the season with a banged-up wide receivers room that also is searching for targets after the departure of Deebo Samuel. McCaffrey still has a shot at finishing the year as the top player in fantasy football and could be a bargain in the middle of or late in the first round of drafts. Pro Bowl 7. Kyren Williams, 8. Ashton Jeanty, 9. Josh Jacobs Williams is among my favorite running back targets this year. The Los Angeles Rams playmaker, who received a $33 million contract extension in August, eclipsed 1,300 yards from scrimmage and scored at least 15 times in each of his first two seasons as a full-time starter. He enters the 2025 campaign staring at a very favorable schedule, with seven matchups against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the most fantasy points allowed to running backs in 2024. He has four games against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the fewest points allowed to the position. Williams, who eclipsed 100 yards from scrimmage and/or scored in 13 of 16 appearances last season, is the No. 7 player in my Top 75 rankings. Just Napping 17. Alvin Kamara, 18. Chuba Hubbard, 19. James Conner Like McCaffrey, Kamara once was an easy Top-5 consideration at running back, but has fallen down the ranks in recent seasons. I believe the New Orleans Saints veteran still has RB1 value, but that shouldn't be expected on a consistent basis. Kamara, the No. 17 player in my rankings, is an ideal matchup-based RB2 or flex play this season. The Saints' schedule is among the most running-back-friendly in the NFL, with no matchups against teams that ranked inside the Top 5 for the fewest points allowed to running backs in 2024. They have seven games against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the most points allowed the position, with six such games within the first seven weeks of the season. With likely inconsistent quarterback play to start the season, the Saints should feed Kamara with regularity. He is a stellar draft-day target, especially if you prioritize wide receivers early on. Conner is another player to target if you choose to focus on wide receivers early in your draft. The Arizona Cardinals veteran finished the 2024 campaign as a low-end RB1 in leagues with at least 14 teams and could be on track for similar production in 2025. Conner totaled a career-high 1,508 yards from scrimmage last season. He also totaled 1,205 yards from scrimmage in 2023. The eight-year veteran scored nine touchdowns in each of those campaigns. This year, the Cardinals welcome a schedule that features just one matchup against a team that ranked inside the Top 10 for the fewest fantasy points allowed to running backs last season. They have six matchups against teams that ranked inside the Top 10 for the most fantasy points allowed to the position. Conner is the No. 19 player in my rankings and is being undervalued in drafts. He is a great RB2 target with RB1 opportunity. Deep Sleepers 23. Tyrone Tracy, 24. R.J. Harvey, 26. Brian Robinson Tracy was a midseason star in 2024, emerging as a rookie sensation for the New York Giants. He is now being drafted in the mid to late rounds of fantasy drafts and could be a great rotational piece for your lineup. The second-year playmaker could be even more productive this year if the Giants manage to elevate their passing game behind quarterback Russell Wilson and star pass catcher Malik Nabers, creating offensive balance. Tracy sits at No. 23 in my Top 75 rankings and can be used as a matchup-based RB2 or flex play throughout the 2025 campaign. Top 75 Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings for 2025 1.
