Family member among three arrested in Jane Furse nurse murder
In a shocking twist, police have arrested a close family member along with two other suspects in connection with the brutal murder of a 64-year-old Jane Furse nurse, Morudi Frank Phetla.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said a joint operation on May 5 led to the arrest of two suspects in Gauteng — in Ekurhuleni, Kempton Park, and Tembisa — while the third was nabbed in Limpopo.
"During the operation, a 49-year-old African female suspect was arrested at an estate in Kempton Park.
Meanwhile, a 42-year-old African male suspect was apprehended in Tembisa. The team then travelled to Limpopo, where a 60-year-old woman was arrested in Jane Furse."
The arrests follow the March 16 incident, when Phetla was kidnapped outside his home in the Zamane Section of Jane Furse around 7pm.
His vehicle was later found idling with its headlights on, but Phetla was nowhere to be found, prompting the opening of a kidnapping case.
Phetla's body was discovered the following day, on March 17, around 6am, by a shepherd under the Mabintana Bridge in Jane Furse. He had suffered fatal head injuries.
Ledwaba stated that the motive for the murder remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
He further stated that the trio are expected to appear before the Nebo Magistrate's Court today, facing multiple charges in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Phetla.
"The suspects are facing charges of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder," said Ledwaba.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the swift and coordinated efforts of the investigative team, which led to the timely arrests of the suspects.
Hadebe further reiterated the SAPS's commitment to justice, stating that "no stone will be left unturned in uncovering all the circumstances surrounding these heinous crimes."

Ramkisson-Kara said the man then went to his brother's homestead, and related to him what had transpired. He told his brother that he was going to hand himself over to the police. At the police station, he reported to the officer on duty what he had done. The police took him back to his homestead, where he showed them his wife's body. He was then arrested and charged with murder,' said Ramkisson-Kara. In court, prosecutor Zama Zikalala led the testimony of the accused's brother and the police official in question. 'The postmortem results were also handed in to the court. In aggravation of sentence, Zikalala told the court that the accused had a previous conviction for assaulting the deceased on a prior occasion. 'We remain committed to the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide,' said Ramkisson-Kara. South Africa does not lack insight into the root causes and consequences of GBVF; what is missing is decisive leadership and meaningful implementation,' said Monakali. While commemorating Women's Month, Monakali said they remained deeply concerned about the low conviction rate of offenders and the persistently high prevalence of violence against women and children in South Africa. 'We must ask ourselves critical questions: Are we truly winning the fight against GBVF, or are we more concerned with creating the appearance of progress, ticking boxes, and meeting targets on paper while failing survivors in reality? Alleged killers of Mpumalanga cop traced to Eswatini
On August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police (REP), with the assistance of Commissioner Vusie Manoma Masango, traced three suspected killers to Eswatini. Lowvelder reports that the suspects allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on August 8, while he and fellow officers were responding to a burglary at a business centre in Schoemansdal. According to the REP, two additional suspects were later traced to the Sishweleni region. When they noticed the police, they allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and fatally shoot both suspects. In a statement, National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola thanked the cross-border operation and Masango for assisting in tracing the killers to Eswatini. Four South Africans arrested over Home Affairs fire
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the fire that destroyed the Germiston Home Affairs office. The incident happened on Tuesday during a protest by Pharoe Park residents against eviction for unpaid rent. Amid the unrest, some protesters allegedly threw a petrol bomb into the first floor of the Home Affairs building, sparking a fire that spread from a neighbouring block of flats. Schreiber said Home Affairs had opened a criminal case and was working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure convictions. 'Home Affairs is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office. It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand,' he said. Police arrested two people on Tuesday and took two more into custody on Thursday. 'For those who jumped to conclusions designed to fuel another type of fire: all four are South Africans, who will be prosecuted because we are governed by law, not prejudice,' Schreiber added.
