Creativity sparks innovation within SME South Africa
Identifying human creativity and digital advancement
To build a resilient and high-performing business, it is crucial to have a team aligned with the company's values and goals. SME South Africa's parent brand, Oak Ventures, regularly reinforces the importance of building with 'the ideal team member' and the frameworks that support consistent growth.
The ideal team player is defined as someone who is smart, humble, and hungry. In other words, someone eager to drive advancement. SME South Africa also runs on the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a model that supports strong culture, accountability, and operational efficiency. A core EOS principle is having 'the right people in the right seats,' ensuring talented individuals are empowered to do their best work in roles suited to their strengths.
This principle recently came to life through an innovation by Karabo Kgopane, SME South Africa's community manager, who developed a new AI chatbot to assist entrepreneurs directly via social media.
The SME Advice Growth Bot was created as an extension of the SME Advice offering, giving entrepreneurs instant, real-time support. It draws information from SME South Africa's website and, when additional help is needed, directs users to business mentors via the SME Advice platform.
By offering on-demand digital mentorship, the bot complements broader brand initiatives such as the SME Growth Pod pop-up campaign and the 2025 SME South Africa Funding Summit. Together, these efforts reflect the organisation's commitment to making business support more accessible, practical, and immediate.
Bringing AI into unlikely places
Kgopane developed the chatbot using Meta's new chatbot tools, a feature he was eager to explore and adapt for South African entrepreneurs.
'It's the era of AI. Everyone's trying to use it in a smart, accessible way,' says Kgopane. 'None of our competitors are using AI quite like this, so I immediately saw the opportunity to fill the gap.'
The SME Advice Growth Bot bridges the gap between social media discovery and meaningful brand engagement. Because it's integrated into WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, it meets entrepreneurs where they already spend time, offering 24/7 mobile access to reliable, relevant business support.
Recognising exceptional innovation
SME South Africa's leadership team has recognised Kgopane's creativity and foresight as major contributors to the brand's recent social media growth and expanding reach. In recognition of his efforts, he has been nominated for the Social Media Wiz category at the upcoming New Generation Awards.
'He's an exceptionally talented individual who brings a rare combination of creativity, precision, and strategic thinking to everything he does,' says Velly Bosega, CEO of SME South Africa (Oak Ventures). 'His work is consistently sharp, engaging, and perfectly aligned with our brand values – a true testament to his deep understanding of the digital landscape.'
Though the SME Advice Growth Bot is still in its early training phase, the response from users has already been overwhelmingly positive; a promising indicator of its future success.

The United States (U.S.), African Partners to Drive Global Clean Cooking Access at Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16)
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is taking a leadership role at the upcoming Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) in Busan, South Korea, bringing governments, international organizations and industry together to accelerate global access to clean cooking. The initiative underscores Washington's commitment to advancing reliable, affordable, and healthy energy solutions worldwide, with U.S.–Africa cooperation being particularly critical to expanding clean cooking access and infrastructure across the continent. While more than one billion people have gained access to clean cooking in recent years – largely through adoption of LPG – nearly two billion people still rely on polluting fuels, with Africa representing a significant share of those affected. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has emphasized that access to clean cooking in Africa is not just an energy challenge, but a critical development issue affecting health, economic opportunity and dignity, particularly for women and children. Expanding reliable, affordable LPG solutions across the continent requires robust infrastructure and strong collaboration with international partners, including the U.S. At CEM16, the U.S. DOE will spotlight the urgency of closing this gap, calling for strategies and investment to scale up clean cooking fuels and infrastructure and seeking to work with new partners and stakeholders to mobilize financing, deploy proven technologies and accelerate progress toward universal clean cooking access. The U.S. and African nations are working together to scale up clean cooking fuels and deploy the infrastructure necessary to reach every household, with LPG recognized as a practical, reliable and scalable solution. A Minister-CEO roundtable – Fueling Life: Reliable Energy Access for All – will spotlight approaches to financing, deploying infrastructure and scaling technologies that expand access to clean cooking fuels. The session will feature opening remarks from Michael Kelly, Deputy Managing Director of the World Liquid Gas Association, and James P. Danly, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy, followed by interventions from senior policymakers including Khalid Almehaid, Deputy Minister for Sustainability and Climate Change, Ministry of Energy, Saudi Arabia; Hohyeon Lee, Second Vice Minister, Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, South Korea; Samantha Graham-Maré, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Electricity and Energy, South Africa; and Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy, European Commission. Private sector leaders will also take the stage to discuss solutions for accelerating clean cooking access and the role of industry in mobilizing investment. NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, and Jonathan Fancher, CEO of Petredec Global, will join the discussion to share perspectives from the global gas and African energy sectors. 'Expanding access to reliable, affordable clean cooking in Africa goes beyond energy and requires strong partnerships and infrastructure investment. The African Energy Chamber is committed to working with governments, the private sector and partners like the U.S. DOE to drive investment, scale LPG deployment and deliver the infrastructure needed to make clean cooking a reality for every household,' states Ayuk. The event will mark an important milestone in the lead-up to the launch of the new CEM Clean Cooking Initiative, Fueling Lives: Affordable, Reliable, Healthy Cooking for All, designed to catalyze global investment and partnerships. The initiative aims to fast-track deployment of clean cooking fuels and infrastructure, with a particular focus on regions where the need is most urgent, such as Africa and South and Southeast Asia. Notably, ExxonMobil is investing $1.5 billion to revitalize the Usan deepwater oilfield in offshore Block OML 138, with a final investment decision expected in 2025. Shell's Nigerian subsidiary SNEPCo is spearheading the $5 billion Conga North project, while TotalEnergies and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company are driving a $550 million non-associated gas project. With the country seeking to unlock $30 billion in oil and $5 billion in gas investments by 2029, a strong pipeline of projects is on the horizon for Nigeria. Amid these developments, services offered by companies such as Adelaar Energy will not only support operations but ensure projects align with Nigeria's broader goals of reducing emissions, enhancing output and delivering impactful energy to West Africa. Orife's participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies reflects a commitment to supporting African production and is expected to create new pathways for industry collaboration. Morocco's National Railway Office (ONCF) is securing €202 million ($225 million) in funding from German development bank KfW to modernise Greater Casablanca's railway network. This financing follows a $350 million loan approved by the World Bank in June, both supporting the 'Service Intra-métropolitain Rapproché' (SIR) programme. The investments aim to improve access to employment and essential services by strengthening public transportation in Casablanca, while enhancing ONCF's railway capacity in the region. SIR involves developing a 73-kilometre rail network through infrastructure upgrades, electrification, and signaling enhancements and includes building or upgrading 15 integrated railway stations, according to a report by Moroccan news website Rue Key areas to be served include Zenata, Mohammedia, Nouaceur, and Bouskoura.
