Extra funds needed to fix Desa Indah basketball court before July 19 tourney
MIRI (July 11): Additional funding is needed to repair surface cracks and repaint the basketball court at Jalan Dato Permaisuri 3C Recreational Park in Desa Indah here, said Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The state Minister of Transport said efforts are underway to secure the necessary allocation to repair and repaint the basketball court floor.
He also urged for the electricity supply to the court to be expedited so that the facility can be used at night.
'We hope the lighting system can be operational before the Under-18 and Open 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament scheduled for July 19,' he said after visiting the site yesterday morning.
Lee noted that a previous RM350,000 grant was used for the construction of the court's roof, as well as drainage and irrigation works around the perimeter, including the installation of four culvert crossings outside the court area.
'The floor repair works should have been included in the original project scope. We will now work on securing additional funds to address this,' he explained.
The project, carried out by Miri City Council (MCC), commenced in January and was completed on May 9.
The recreational park has since become a popular spot for residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods, featuring not only the basketball court but also a football field and a combined badminton/sepak takraw court.
Separately, Lee reported the completion of a drainage project at Jalan Dato Permaisuri 2C, which started on Jan 6 and was completed on May 5.
The RM300,000 project involved constructing a 2.5-meter-wide covered concrete drain spanning more than 200 meters.
Lee expressed hope that the improved drainage system will help reduce flash flooding in the area, which had previously been prone to water stagnation – a key contributor to mosquito breeding and dengue problems.

All participants and prize winners in a group photo after the prize presentation. MIRI (Aug 6) The inaugural Miri Squash Championships cum Mayor's Cup Challenge concluded on a high note as JH Hardware emerged champion and took home the RM2,000 cash prize. The three-day was held at Pei Min Squash Centre here from Aug 1 to 3. The team comprising Alden Yeo, Wong Lee Hong, Russell Ong, Marcus Lee and Toby Huang defeated strong contenders from across Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam. Miri Squash Association (MSA) president Yeo Yaw Lee saw the tournament as a showcase not only of competitive sportsmanship but the community's warmth and generosity as well. 'During the tournament, a fund-raising was launched and successfully raised RM2,735. MSA initially pledged a RM1,000 donation for 22-month-old Yvonne Paw who requires an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) and later matched the donation with an additional RM1,265, bringing the total donation to RM4,000. 'Beyond competitive play, young players should also learn to care for the community. This fund-raising effort reflected the primary purposes of hosting this tournament,' he said during the prize presentation. According to tournament organisers, the strong turnout reaffirmed the support for youth sports development. 'We organise this competition annually to nurture new squash talents, which is why we have men's and women's categories for the under-nine age group. Our aim is to give more children the chance to play, learn and grow through competition,' Yeo explained. It was held concurrently with the Miri Invitational Tournament with the hope of further promoting the development of squash throughout the state. 'MSA hope to continue hosting it annually here, and if Sibu and Kuching follow suit, we'll have the opportunity to promote regular team tournaments across Sarawak,' Yeo added. The initiative aims to extend road safety education to students and rural communities, with the goal of cultivating more courteous and responsible road users. 'And under the Sarawak Road Safety Council, which I chair, we are committed to reducing road accidents across the state. We want everyone to be safe on our roads,' said Lee during the Sarawak Traffic Games 2025, held at Rejang Park Traffic Garden here yesterday. He emphasised the need for collaboration from all government agencies and the community to make this initiative a success. 'With the roll-out of the Sarawak Traffic Games, students can become ambassadors who understand and promote traffic rules,' he added. The event saw participation from nine local primary and secondary schools, including SK St Mary, SJKC Taman Rajang, SJKC Tung Hua, SK Perbandaran Sibu No.4, SMK Methodist, SMK Sungai Merah, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Tung Hua, and SMK Chung Hua Sibu. Lee encouraged all schools in Sibu to join the next edition of the Games, where the top five teams will qualify for the final competition. This year, 52 schools participated in the public speaking component of the Sarawak Traffic Games by submitting videos between July 8 and July 16. 'This legacy has been successfully revived and rebranded in 2024 as the Sarawak Traffic Games, under the full implementation of the Ministry of Transport Sarawak,' said Lee. The programme officially resumed in Miri in November 2024 and has since been held in Sarikei, Kuching, and now in Sibu. Future editions are scheduled for Sri Aman and Bintulu. Lee highlighted that the Rejang Park Traffic Garden, built over 30 years ago, plays a central role in hosting the Games in Sibu. 'My Ministry has helped upgrade the traffic garden with an allocation of RM350,000,' he noted. Rejang Park is among six traffic gardens in Sarawak, alongside those in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Bintulu, and Miri, which have received special funding to remain safe and effective learning spaces for students. Acting Sibu Resident Christopher Ranggau Unting expressed hope that the Sarawak Traffic Games would be institutionalised as an annual event, offering early and informal education on road safety and civic ethics to schoolchildren. The event was attended by deputy Transport Minister (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Senator Robert Lau; Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak director Norizan Jili; Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili; Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting and his deputy Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley; and Sibu Rural District Council Environment and Public Health Standing Committee Chairman Cr Kevin Lau.
