Light showers likely on Independence Day: IMD
Safdarjung, the city's base weather station, recorded 13.1 mm of rainfall till 8:30 am, followed by a deluge of 79.4 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Lodi Road recorded 66.8 mm, Ayanagar 66.0 mm and Pusa 49.0 mm. The downpour also brought a marked fall in mercury levels, with the maximum temperature at Safdarjung settling at 27.7 degrees celsius, 6.1 degrees celsius below normal, and the minimum at 23.6 degrees celsius, 2.9 degrees celsius below normal.
Palam reported a high of 27.6 degrees celsius and a low of 23.4 degrees celsius. The IMD said maximum temperatures across Delhi-NCR dropped by 5–7 degrees celsius compared to the previous day.
The wet spell was attributed to a monsoon trough passing through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, coupled with cyclonic circulations over Punjab and west Uttar Pradesh. Winds over the city remained mostly south-westerly, reaching speeds of up to 19 kmph.
For Independence Day on Friday, the IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of very light to light rain or thunderstorms in the morning and forenoon, followed by another brief spell in the evening or night.
The maximum temperature is expected to rise slightly to 31–33 degrees celsius, with the minimum hovering between 23 degrees celsius and 25 degrees celsius.
Light rain is expected to persist over the weekend and into next week, with cloudy skies and mild weather continuing through August 20.
District-wise forecasts suggest rain chances across all parts of Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.

More showers on the cards as IMD sounds red alert for Pune's ghat sections
Pune: The Met department has sounded a red alert for ghat areas on Monday and Tuesday as rains lashed several pockets between 8.30pm on Saturday and 8.30am on Sunday. Tamhini received the highest rainfall at 210mm, followed by Koyna (Navja) with 174mm and Koyna (Pophali) with 151mm. School holiday: Schools in Jammu and THESE cities to remain closed on Monday, August 18
In view of the heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir, which triggered flash floods in several areas, the Union Territory's education department on Sunday said that all government and private schools in Jammu will remain closed on Monday, August 18. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in the UT for the next two days – August 18 and 19. 'In view of the inclement and bad weather conditions, it is hereby ordered that all the Government as well as Private Schools of Jammu Division shall remain closed for tomorrow, August 18,' said the Director of School Education, Jammu. However, Jammu is not the only city where August 18 is a school holiday. All educational institutions in Chandigarh will remain closed on Monday, August 18. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria announced this holiday on August 15 during the celebration of the 79th Independence Day. The administration said the school holiday is for the convenience of students and schools, without providing a specific reason. Academic and administrative activities will resume to normal functioning on Tuesday, 19 August. Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain has also announced a school holiday on August 18. The holiday was announced in view of Baba Mahakal ji's royal procession. Schools will remain closed in several areas of Karnataka due to IMD's red alert for heavy rain in Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts. Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Meena Nagaraj on Sunday declared a holiday for anganwadis, primary schools, and high schools in six taluks for Monday, in view of heavy rains. The holiday applies to schools in Koppa, Kalasa, Mudigere, Sringeri, and N.R. Pura taluks, and those located in Avathi, Jagara, Vastare, Alduru, and Khandya hoblis of Chikkamagaluru taluk. Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade has also announced a holiday for all schools and colleges in the district on Monday. Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Lathakumari has announced a holiday for anganwadis, and primary and high schools in Sakaleshpur and Belur taluks, and those in K. Hoskote hobli of Alur taluk. The Thrissur District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on August 18 as heavy rains persist. The order, issued as a precautionary measure, applies to all institutions, including CBSE, ICSE, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Anganwadis, madrasas and tuition centres. The holiday applies to school-level exams. The date of the Onam exam to be held tomorrow will be announced later. On August 19, schools in Manipur will remain closed in observance of Maharaj Veer Vikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur's sixth birthday. Banks and other government institutions will also remain closed across the state.
