Chile loses at Bolivia and will miss third straight World Cup
Bolivia kept its hopes alive for an inter-continental playoff spot in a bid to reach the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The top six teams in South American qualifying will secure direct berths in the World Cup. Defending champion Argentina has already qualified.
Chile's golden generation won two Copa America titles — in 2015 and '16 — but is out of contention for next summer's expanded 48-team tournament.
'Sad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,' veteran Chile striker Alexis Sánchez said after the match. 'We have to keep working. There's change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left.'
Bolivia scored the first with Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz.
The hosts now have 17 points to put pressure on Venezuela, which has 18 and will play later at Uruguay. Both are fighting for seventh place, which secures the inter-continental playoff spot. Sixth-place Colombia has 21 points.

'All the nerves and anxiousness were definitely there, and it's sort of a course where I don't know if you ever really feel comfortable,' the 50-year-old Webb said. Juli Inkster had a 75. BALTIMORE (AP) — Christian Walker and Yainer Diaz homered, Jesús Sánchez ended a lengthy slump with five hits and the Houston Astros beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-2 Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak. The Astros scored early and often against Baltimore rookie Brandon Young, who six days earlier in Houston had a perfect game ruined with two outs in the eighth inning. In the rematch, the AL West leaders built a 7-1 lead in the third and coasted. Walker hit a two-run homer in the first, Carlos Correa singled in two runs in the second and Diaz connected in the third with a runner on after Sánchez delivered an RBI single. Sánchez broke an 0-for-29 skid with a first-inning single and finished 5 for 5, his most productive day with Houston since being acquired from Miami in a July 31 trade. The five hits tied a career high. Young (1-7) gave up seven runs and nine hits before leaving with one out in the sixth after hurting his left hamstring while covering first base on a grounder. Akie Iwai leads CPKC Women's Open, days after first LPGA Tour victory
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (AP) — Akie Iwai was right back on top of the leaderboard in the CPKC Women's Open on Thursday, four days after her breakthrough victory in the Portland Classic. Iwai closed her afternoon round at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club with birdies on the par-4 eighth and ninth holes for a 7-under 64 and a two-stroke lead. 'Last week I won, but already it's in the past, already past,' Iwai said. Fifteen-year-old Canadian amateur Aphrodite Deng was tied for second with top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul, Leona Maguire, Gaby Lopez and 2023 winner Megan Khang. On Sunday in Oregon, Iwai joined twin sister Chisato as a rookie LPGA Tour winner. The 23-year-old Japanese player had second-place finishes in Thailand in February and Los Angeles in April, then watched her sister win at Mayakoba in May in Mexico.
