Palestinian filmmakers Nasser brothers win Cannes ‘Best Director' award
The film is an international co-production between France, Palestine, Germany, Portugal, Qatar and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Palestinian filmmakers Tarzan and Arab Nasser have clinched the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival for their latest work, Once Upon a Time in Gaza. The film had its world premiere at the festival to thunderous applause, captivating both audiences and critics with its blend of comedy and drama. The Nasser brothers, who have long been prominent voices in Palestinian cinema, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and the international support they received throughout the film's journey. This latest win adds to their growing legacy at Cannes, where their short Condom Lead competed in the Main Competition and their debut feature Dégradé premiered in Critics' Week. Their second feature, Gaza Mon Amour, previously premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and was Palestine's official submission to the 2021 Academy Awards. Critics have responded enthusiastically to Once Upon a Time in Gaza, praising its artistry and relevance. Clotilde Chinnici of Loud and Clear Reviews called it 'necessary and remarkable,' highlighting its powerful political undertones and stunning visuals. Jonathan Romney of Screen Daily described it as 'taut' and 'succinct,' predicting the film would garner significant attention after its Cannes debut. Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter noted its emotional depth, calling it 'small-scale yet broad in its implications,' particularly in the context of ongoing events in Gaza. Set against the backdrop of the besieged enclave, the film follows Yahya, a young student who befriends Osama, a kind-hearted restaurant owner. Together, they begin selling drugs while delivering falafel, only to encounter a corrupt and egotistical police officer. The story provides a deeply human portrait of life in Gaza, blending humor and harsh reality in a way that resonates far beyond its setting. Once Upon a Time in Gaza is an international co-production between France, Palestine, Germany and Portugal, with additional support from Qatar and Jordan. The cast includes Nader Abd Alhay—known for Farah on Netflix—Ramzi Maqdisi (Ghost Hunting) and Majd Eid (Holy Spider), with cinematography by Christophe Graillot and editing by Sophie Reine. The screenplay was co-written by the Nasser brothers alongside Amer Nasser and Marie Legrand. It was produced by Rani Massalha and Marie Legrand of Les Films du Tambour and Muriel Merlin of Lyly Productions, with a broad base of co-producers from around the globe including Rise Studios, Made in Palestine Project, Red Balloon Film, Riva Filmproduktion, and Ukbar Filmes, among others. Distribution is handled by MAD Distribution for the Arab world, The Party Film Sales for international markets, and Dulac Distribution for France. The project also benefited from the backing of major cultural institutions, including Aide aux Cinémas du Monde – CNC, Eurimages, the Doha Film Institute, and the Royal Film Commission's Jordan Film Fund.

Andrea Barber recalls 'gross question' about 'Full House' co-star John Stamos
Popular sitcom Full House viewers likely had crushes on John Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse in the show, but his young co-stars didn't see him that way. Andrea Barber, who played the next-door neighbour in the series, recalled an old interview in which she was asked if she "ever" had "a crush" on Stamos, reported The Hollywood Reporter. The actress called it a "gross question" as she was way too young at that time and regarded Stamos as her elder brother. While speaking on the How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast alongside co-star Jodie Sweetin, Barber recalled being asked in interviews if she "ever" had a "crush" on Stamos. "No," she added, going on to say of Stamos and fellow co-star Dave Coulier, who played family friend Joey Gladstone, who also helped raise the Tanner girls alongside widowed dad Danny (Bob Saget), " "They're like our older brothers, and we do not think of them that way," added Barber. Sweetin agreed, adding, "Not even older brothers. They're like my uncles." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the moment came up during a game of "Would You Rather" on a recent minisode of Barber and Sweetin's rewatch podcast, as they look back at the two-parter where Jesse and Becky (Lori Loughlin) get married. During the wedding-themed quiz, the co-hosts were asked if they'd rather marry Joey or Jesse, but they found the question to be "weird". "They're like family, and it's weird," Sweetin said. The pair did, however, pick Joey, with Sweetin saying the choice was based on "temperament alone". "There's nothing remotely attractive about this," Barber added later. "They are just our buddies and, yeah, this is kind of a weird question." After Full House ended in 1995, Sweetin, Barber, Bure and more of the Full House cast reprised their roles in the Netflix reboot Fuller House, which ran from 2016-2020.

The impulse to retire is very strong, says Tina Fey
Actress and comedian Tina Fey says her "impulse to hide and retire" is "strong" so that new faces in comedy can step to the forefront. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "The impulse to hide and retire is very strong because I do think it's time to help new voices get in the mix. "It's something I'm already doing, but I want to do more. Even on the walk over here I was like, 'I am so tired of hearing from me. Surely everyone else is tired of hearing from the same people over and over again.' " However, the 54-year-old star, who has daughters Alice and Penelope with producer husband Jeff Richmond, said that she was grateful for her upcoming Netflix series 'The Four Seasons' because it "saved" her while juggling a lot in her personal life, reports She said: "This sandwich generation stuff, having your kids and an aging parent in the same house, it's wonderful … but it also really takes a lot out of you." "My mom passed away in the summer, my older daughter went to college in August and my husband and I went to work on 'The Four Seasons' in the fall. That kept me in the world. It saved me from just shrinking up like a little granny apple head." Fey and her friend Amy Poehler previously hosted the Golden Globe Awards four times and presented the Oscars once but she's got no interest in helming another awards show. She said: "Nikki Glaser killed it at the Globes, and she should keep that job forever. Me? No. I shouldn't say never, but it's such a high risk for such low reward." While Lorne Michaels previously said Fey "could easily" take the reins if he ever steps down as 'SNL' showrunner, she insisted he is "irreplaceable". Talking about his remarks, Fey said: "It was nice of him to say that, and I love him very much. Indo-Asian News Service
